  • Thick composite laminated plates is considered in 3D finite-element. To consider continuity of transverse stresses and displacement field, mixed finite-element has been developed by using layerwise theory and the minimum potential energy principle. Mixed finite-element has been enforced through the thick direction, Z, of a laminated plate by considering six degree-of-freedoms per node. Six degree-of-freedoms are three displacement components in the coordinate axes directions and three transverse stress components ${\sigma}_z,\;{\tau}_{xz},\;{\tau}_{yz}$. The model maintain the fundamental elasticity relations that are stress-strain relation and displacement-strain relation, because the transverse stress components invoked as nodal degrees of freedom by using the fundamental elasticity relationship between th components of stress and displacement. Random vibration analysis of the model is performed by computing consistent mass matrix and computing covariance in frequency domain technique.

  • On this study, we optimized maximizing the thrust force at the TFLM(Transverse Flux Linear Motor) using design of experiments by the table of orthogonal array and the analysis of means(ANOM), and classified the most contributive design factor maximizing the thrust force at the TFLM by analysis of variance(ANOVA). From now on, we are going to apply the required technique to design various uses and shapes of the TFLM.

Non-linear transverse vibrations of tensioned nanobeams using nonlocal beam theory

  • In this study, nonlinear transverse vibrations of tensioned Euler-Bernoulli nanobeams are studied. The nonlinear equations of motion including stretching of the neutral axis and axial tension are derived using nonlocal beam theory. Forcing and damping effects are included in the equations. Equation of motion is made dimensionless via dimensionless parameters. A perturbation technique, the multiple scale methods is employed for solving the nonlinear problem. Approximate solutions are applied for the equations of motion. Natural frequencies of the nanobeams for the linear problem are found from the first equation of the perturbation series. From nonlinear term of the perturbation series appear as corrections to the linear problem. The effects of the various axial tension parameters and different nonlocal parameters as well as effects of different boundary conditions on the vibrations are determined. Nonlinear frequencies are estimated; amplitude-phase modulation figures are presented for simple-simple and clamped-clamped cases.

  • For a Product Oil Carrier, longitudinal bulkhead as well as transverse one is corrugated shape in general and intersection part of bulkheads is utilized for a pipe trunk. Since lower and upper stools are to be connected with all of longitudinal and transverse bulkheads, they have a uniform height respectively. The purpose of this study is the development of design system for the minimization of total weight of longitudinal and transverse bulkheads at the initial design stage. In this study, the beam element models for longitudinal and transverse corrugated bulkheads are established and they are applied to the structural analysis. For the practical design, the selection and the position of an additional pipe trunk are considered in this study. In addition the required minimum distance between the bracket installed along the web of corrugation at lower stool and the diaphragm is taken into consideration during optimization process. Evolution strategy(ES) is adopted as an optimization technique.

Case Report of Avulsion Amputation of Multiple Digits: Use of Rerouting the Transverse Digital Palmar Arch (가로손가락손바닥활을 이용한 다발성 벗겨짐 손상 손가락 재접합술 - 증례보고 -)

  • Purpose: Avulsion injuries of digits have been presented for a long time as complex management problems. Despite of microsurgical advances, it is difficult to achieve good functional results and their management remains somewhat controversial. However, in a finger there are three transverse digital palmar arches. The middle and distal transverse digital palmar arches are consistently large(almost 1 mm) and may be used for arterial vessel repairs either proximally or distally, depending on the length and direction needed. 39-year-old man presented with avulsion amputation of the ulnar three digits, was operated using only arterial anastomosis with rerouting the transverse digital palmar arches. Methods: Replantation was performed using the artery-only technique. Because the digital arteries had been damaged, we did that the transverse digital palmar arches were transposed in an inverted Y to I configuration and were lengthened with rerouting them for the purpose of direct anastomosis of the digital artery. Venous drainage was provided by an external bleeding method with partial nail excision and external heparin irrigation. Results: The authors conclude that complete avulsion amputations with only soft tissue at the distal to insertion of the flexor digitorum superficialis tendon were salvageable with acceptable functional results. All three fingers survived. Conclusion: With technical advancements, the transverse digital palmar arches play an important role for finger amputation. Three digital palmar arches give us additional treatment option for the finger amputation. In this case, replantation with only-arterial anastomosis was successful and we obtained good aesthetic and functional outcome.

Case Study on Remodeling Outlet Structure within a Sedimentation Basin for Improving Performance (침전지 유출부 구조 Remodeling을 통한 개선사례 연구)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the launder type on settling performance and hydrodynamic behavior within the two certain full-scale sedimentation basins (each flow rate/one basin; $10,000m^3/d$); one is the transverse typed launder(existing basin) and the other is building the finger type launder in combination with the longitudinal baffle. Comparative experimental investigations have been carried out through residual turbidity and particle concentration measurements in each effluent from two basins with the transverse and the finger type launders, respectively. From the experimental results, we could observe that turbidity removal rate in the finger type launder basin (modified basin) is about 30% higher than that in the transverse type launder basin (existing basin). Also, from the measurement of total particle concentration in each effluent, the removal efficiency was improved about 27% within modified basin compared to the existing basin. In order to explain the comparative experimental results and investigate the hydridynamic behavior within each basin in more detail, we conducted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and verified simulation results with acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV) technique. From the CFD simulation, it was investigated that extreme upward flow occurs underneath of the transverse launder. On the other hand, in the case of modified basin, the upward flow, which occurred in the beneath of launder, was much less than that in the existing basins.

Structural Behavior of RC Beams with Headed Bars using Finite Element Analysis (유한요소해석 기반 확대머리 이형철근 상세 따른 RC보의 구조성능 효과 분석)

  • In this study, the structural behavior by the details of the lap region with the headed bar was estimated through finite element analysis. To solve the finite element analysis of the anchorage region with complex contact conditions and nonlinear behavior, a quasi-static analysis technique by explicit dynamic analysis was performed. The accuracy of the finite element model was verified by comparing the experimental results with the finite element analysis results. It was confirmed that the quasi-static analysis technique well reflected the behavior of enlarged headed bar connection. As a result of performing numerical analysis using 21 finite element models with various development lengths and transverse reinforcement indexes, it was confirmed that the increase of development length and transverse reinforcement index improved the maximum strength and ductility. However, to satisfy the structural performance, it should be confirmed that both design variables(development length and transverse reinforcement index) must be enough at the design criteria. In the recently revised design standard(KDS 14 20 52 :2021), a design formula of headed bar that considers both the development length and the transverse reinforcing bar index is presented. Also the results of this study confirmed that not only the development length but also transverse reinforcing bars have a very important effect.

  • The treatment of adults with dentofacial deformities is frequently complicated by existence of discrepancies in transverse dimension. Control of the transverse dimension through surgical technique is now a valuable treatment consideration in non-growing patients. Proper diagnosis of relative and absolute maxillary transverse deficiency is imperative prior to surgical intervention. Therapeutic purpose should be implemented accordingly to facilitate correction of transverse discrepancies concomitant with treatment objectives in sagittal dimension in order to provide the patient with the most stable and functional result possible. Concomitant surgical correction of narrow palate require less treatment time, treatment cost and post-treatment relapse is less than to do only orthodontic therapy. This report is concerned with rapid palatal expansion by a combination of corticotomy and orthodontic treatment.

Follow Up Study of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Patients Underwent Partial Release of Transverse Carpal Ligament Using Inching Test (인칭검사를 이용하여 부분 절개를 시행한 수근관 증후군 환자의 추적관찰)

  • Purpose: Complete release of the transverse carpal ligament (TCL) is accepted as the standard treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, loss of grip and pinch power are reported in some patients after complete release of the TCL. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of complete versus partial carpal tunnel release by using the inching technique. Methods: Nineteen patients (a total of 27 hands) who each had a confirmed diagnosis of CTS were selected from September 2002 to February 2003. The cases were divided into three groups(mild, moderate and severe) based on preoperative electrodiagnostic studies. The patients with partial carpal tunnel syndrome were classified into the mild or moderate groups, while patients with complete carpal tunnel syndrome were classified into the moderate or severe groups. Patient oriented data (functional and symptomatic) were collected and electrophysiologic studies were undertaken preoperatively and postoperatively(on the 2nd week, 1st month, 3rd month and 6th month after surgery).Results: In this study, the mild and moderate groups showed both good functional and symptomatic results and improvements in electrophysiologic studies.Conclusion: Carpal tunnel syndrome patients classified into mild or moderate groups based on nerve conduction studies, and whose precise compression sites were pinpointed using the inching technique, can be treated by partial carpal tunnel release.

Effects of the Abdominal Hollowing Technique Applied during Plank Exercises at Different Angles between Ground and the Humerus on Abdominal Stabilization Muscle Activity

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of the abdominal hollowing technique applied during plank exercises at different shoulder angles between the ground and the humerus on the abdominal muscle activity Methods: The subjects were 36 male volunteers. They were randomized to perform plank exercises or plank exercises using the hollowing technique at 80˚, 90˚, 100˚, and 110˚ between the ground and the humerus. The abdominis muscles were measured using a surface electromyogram. Independent t-tests examined the changes in the activity of these muscles according to the two exercise methods at each angle. The changes in muscle activity were examined according to the selected angles by one-way analysis of variance. Results: The activity of abdominal muscles was investigated according to the angle between the ground and the humerus during the plank exercise. As a result, the muscle activity increased significantly with decreasing angle in the rectus abdominis, external oblique, and internal oblique·transverse abdominis muscles (p<0.05). In terms of the changes in abdominal muscle activity after hollowing plank exercises at the given angles between the ground and the humerus, an increase in angle resulted in a statistically significant increase in the rectus abdominis muscle activity (p<0.05). The activities of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, and internal oblique/transverse abdominis muscles after hollowing plank exercises showed statistically significant increases (p<0.05) compared to those after plank exercises. Conclusion: The hollowing technique and the increase in the angle between the ground and the humerus may be an effective exercise method for increasing the muscle activity of the abdominis muscles.
