This is a study of fatigue strength of weld deposits with transverse cracks in plate up to 50 mm thick. It is concerned with the fatigue properties of welds already with transverse cracks. A previous study of transverse crack occurrence, location and microstructure in accordance with welding conditions was published in the Welding Journal (Lee et al., 1998). A fatigue crack develops as a result of stress concentration and extends with each load cycle until fatigue occurs, or until the cyclic loads are transferred to redundant members. The fatigue performance of a member is more dependent on the localized state of stress than the static strength of the base metal or the weld metal. Fatigue specimens were machined to have transverse cracks located on the surface and inside the specimen. Evaluation of fatigue strength depending on location of transverse cracks was then performed. When transverse cracks were propagated in a quarter-or half-circle shape, the specimen broke at low cycle in the presence of a surface crack. However, when the crack was inside the specimen, it propagated in a circular or elliptical shape and the specimen showed high fatigue strength, enough to reach the fatigue limit within tolerance of design stresses.
In the continuous casting process, the incidence of transverse surface cracks on the piece may occur by multiple and diverse variables. It is noted that mathematical models may predict only the occurance of the transverse surface cracks, but can require a lot of time (more than three days) to produce a result with this process. This study applied neural networks to predict whether the cracks on the piece surface occurs or does not occur. The computation time was shortened to three minutes, making it applicable to an on-line program, which predicts the non-cracks or cracks of the piece surface in the actual continuous casting process. In addition, the operating conditions to prevent the occurrence of the transverse surface cracks, using decision boundaries were also suggested.
Recently, axle load, operating speed and traffic density on railroads have had a tendency to increase and thereby cause additional pressure applied on used track. These operating conditions frequently result in service failure due to wear caused by wheel-rail contact and fatigue damage under cyclic loading. Among rail defects, the transverse crack, which has been the most dangerous type of fatigue damages, is developed from the subsurface crack near the rail running face and grows perpendicular to the rail surface. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate systematically the growth behavior of transverse crack for rail steel under mixed mode. In this study, the fatigue crack growth behavior of the transverse crack in rail steel was experimentally investigated under mixed-mode variable amplitude loadings.
The transverse crack, a type of cold crack, occurs perpendicular to the axis of the weld interface, longitudinal residual stresses ($\sigma$k direction) are more important in transverse crack occurrence from my own experience. Specimens were fabricated and welded under actual construction conditions, and then residual stresses of longitudinal stresses were measured for different welding conditions with SAW and FCAW process. The residual stress values for the specimen welded Interpass temperature below 30$^{\circ}C$ was higher than the specimen welded interpass temperature of 100~120$^{\circ}C$. And also the residual stress values for a specimen measured at weld surface, as welded condition, was higher than that of longitudinal residual stresses that was measured from a small test piece, due to the residual stress was relieved in the process of the cutting and machining. Transverse weld cracks were detected in the area of the maximum residual stresses both SAW and FCAW process.
Among rail defects, the transverse crack, which has been the most dangerous fatigue damage, is developed from shelling near the rail running face and grows perpendicular to the rail surface. Moreover, the crack has occurred frequently fatigue damage during winter. Therefore, to assure the safety of railway vehicles, it is necessary to investigate growth behavior of transverse crack for rail steel. In this study, fatigue crack growth behavior of rail steel and its gas pressure welded part at room and low temperature are performed. The fatigue crack growth rate of the welded part was lower than that of the base part within a lower ${\Delta}K$ region at both room and low temperature, and this difference decreases with increasing the ${\Delta}K$ due to the decrease of the fracture toughness.

The scattered field by a gap/crack on the PEC surface of a large object having low-observable RCS cannot be negligible, but may not be analyzed by the known high-frequency technique. If the electrical width of the crack is very small, the crack can be modeled by an impedance strip, whose scattering formulation can be analytically obtained based on a low-frequency approximation. The scattering solution is formulated for the 2D strip and TE(Transverse Electric) or TM(Transverse Magnetic) wave incidence, from which a 3D ILDC(Incremental Length Diffraction Coefficients) can be extracted. Using the ILDC formulation, the scattering by any arbitrary shaped crack can be estimated. In this paper, an improved ILDC equations are proposed, which combine the known TE and TM solutions. The improved accuracy of the proposed solution is numerically verified.

A neural network approach has been developed to determine the depth of a surface breaking crack in a steel plate from ultrasonic backscattering data. The network is trained by the use of feedforward three-layered network together with a back-scattering algorithm for error correction. The signal used for crack insonification is a mode converted 70$^{\circ}$transverse wave. A numerical analysis of back scattered field is carried out based on elastic wave theory, by the use of the boundary element method. The numerical data are calibrated by comparison with experimental data. The numerical analysis provides synthetic data for the training of the network. The training data have been calculated for cracks with specified increments of the crack depth. The performance of the network has been tested on other synthetic data and experimental data which are different from the training data.

The stress intensity factors for edge cracks located at the bonding interface between the semiconductor chip and the adhesive layer subjected to a uniform transverse tensile strain are investigated. Such cracks might be generated due to a stress singularity in the vicinity of the free surface. The boundary element method (BEM) is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The amplitude of complex stress intensity factor depends on the crack length, but it has a constant value at large crack lengths. The rapid propagation of interface crack is expected if the transverse tensile strain reaches a critical value.
Fatigue crack growth rates(i.e. crack initiation and crack growth of short and long crack) are investigated using commercial plates of high strength Al alloy 7075-T651 for the transverse-longitudinal(T-L) direction in air, water and sea water. Also, the evaluation direct current potential drop(D.C.P.D) method and the fractographical analysis by SEM are carried out. Near threshold region, short crack growth rates were much faster than those of comparable long cracks, and these short crack growth rates actually decrease with increasing crack growth and eventually merge with long crack data. Fatigue crack propagation rates in aggressive media(i.e. sea water) increase noticeably over three times those in air. One of the most significant characters in this phenomenon as a corrosion-fatigue causes an acceleration in crack growth rates. Sea water environment, particularly Cl$^{[-10]}$ solution brings the most detrimental effects to aluminum alloy. The result of fractographical morphology in air, water and sea water by SEM shows obvious dimpled rupture and typical striation in air, but transgranular fracture surface in water and sea water.

The critical subject of transverse crack detection in a rail head is treated in this paper. Conventional bulk wave ultrasonic techniques oftenfail because of shelling and other surface imperfections that shield the defects that lie below the shelling. A guided wave inspection technique is introduced here that can send ultrasonic energy along the rail under the shelling with a capability of finding the deleterious transverse crack defects. Dispersion curves are generated via a semi analytical finite element technique along with a hybrid guided wave finite element technique to explore the most suitable modes and frequencies for finding these defects. Sensor design and experimental feasibility experiments are also reported.
