Turbulent flow and heat transfer characteristics around staggered tube banks were studied using the 3-D Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation governing a steady incompressible flow, which were reformulated in a non-orthogonal coordinate system with cartesian velocity components and discretized by the finite volume method with a non-staggered variable arrangement. The predicted turbulent kinetic energy using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model was lower than that of standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model but showed same result for mean flow field quantities. The prediction of the skin friction coefficient using RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model showed better trend with experimental data than standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model result. The inclined flow showed higher velocity and skin friction coefficient than transverse flow because of extra strain rate ($\frac{{\partial}w}{{\partial}y}$). Also, this was why the inclined flow showed higher local heat transfer coefficient than the transverse flow.

Based on the analyses of the single transverse injection in supersonic flow fields, the mixing characteristics of dual transverse injection of hydrogen in supersonic air flow are studied with computational methods. Three-dimensional Navier -Stokes and the k-$\omega$ SST turbulence model were used. A parametric study is conducted with the variation of the distance between two injectors. The flow patterns and the mixing characteristics of two injection flows are very different from each other, and the flow patterns and the mixing characteristics of the rear injection flow are strongly influenced by those of the first injection flow. The increase of the distance between two injectors up to a specific distance results in the increase of mixing rate and penetration of fuel. However, the increase of the distance over the specific distance results in the decrease of mixing rate and penetration of fuel. From the results it can be stated that there exists a distance between two injectors for optimum mixing characteristics.

In this work, a mixed beam approach is performed to identify the transverse shear behavior of thin-walled composite beams with closed cross-sections. The analytical model includes the effects of elastic couplings, shell wall thickness, and torsion warping. The distributions of shear flow across the section as well as the shear correction coefficients are obtained in a closed form in the beam formulation. The influence of transverse shear deformation on the static behavior of closed cross-section composite beams is also investigated in the analysis
Direct numerical simulations (DNS) is carried out to study fully-developed turbulent concentric annular pipe flow with two radius ratios at $Re_{Dh}\;=\;8900$. In case of $R_1/R_2\;=\;0.5$, the present result for the mean flow is in good agreement with the previous experimental data. Because of the transverse curvature effects, the distributions of mean flow and turbulent intensities are asymmetric in contrast to those of other fully-developed flows (channel and pipe flow). From the distributions of skewness of radial velocity fluctuations, it co be identified that all of the characteristics of channel, pipe and turbulent flow on a cylinder in axial flow can be appeared in concentric annular pipe flow.

Accurate estimation of shear flows in thin-walled beam section is the key issue to evaluate shear stress distribution of ship hull transverse section under the shear forces acting on hull girder. It is regarded that the method using the warping functions obtained by finite element formulation is the state of the art of this field. Recently, however, IACS took effect the new version of CSR in which direct calculation process of shear flow was suggested. In the direct calculation process, shear flow of ship hull section can be obtained by the addition of determinate and indeterminate shear flows calculated respectively. So, in this paper, the shear flow evaluation codes based on the process proposed by IACS CSR and warping function based method were developed respectively. The calculated results of shear flows for the several examples of ship sections were compared with each other and considered in detail.

A transverse drag interaction coefficient of the equivalent resistance coefficient formula for square multi-piers higher than water depth and arranged with equal intervals was studied. From the assumption that the energy loss due to drag interaction according to transverse intervals of resistance bodies is essentially identical to the energy loss due to thick orifice according to porosities, the transverse drag interaction coefficient was derived by employing the orifice's energy loss coefficient. The equivalent resistance coefficient formula including the drag interaction coefficient was compared with the numerical experiments using FLOW-3D, the performance of which was verified by Kim et al.(2008) in the experimental condition with the multi-piers. The comparisons showed good agreement and thus, the equivalent resistance coefficient formula, which does not only consider frictional resistance but also consider the multi-piers' drag resistance varied according to the intervals in longitudinal or transverse direction, was verified.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of the launder type on settling performance and hydrodynamic behavior within the two certain full-scale sedimentation basins (each flow rate/one basin; $10,000m^3/d$); one is the transverse typed launder(existing basin) and the other is building the finger type launder in combination with the longitudinal baffle. Comparative experimental investigations have been carried out through residual turbidity and particle concentration measurements in each effluent from two basins with the transverse and the finger type launders, respectively. From the experimental results, we could observe that turbidity removal rate in the finger type launder basin (modified basin) is about 30% higher than that in the transverse type launder basin (existing basin). Also, from the measurement of total particle concentration in each effluent, the removal efficiency was improved about 27% within modified basin compared to the existing basin. In order to explain the comparative experimental results and investigate the hydridynamic behavior within each basin in more detail, we conducted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and verified simulation results with acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV) technique. From the CFD simulation, it was investigated that extreme upward flow occurs underneath of the transverse launder. On the other hand, in the case of modified basin, the upward flow, which occurred in the beneath of launder, was much less than that in the existing basins.

Recently, due to global warming and urbanization due to the influence of abnormal weather, weather changes are increasing worldwide. Various measures have been proposed to reduce flood damage as flood volume increases due to problems such as an increase in impermeable area due to urbanization and reckless development. In this study, flow characteristics and overflow volume were analyzed using FLOW-3D, a three-dimensional CFD model, in accordance with changes in the cross-flow weir inlet angle installed in the meandering river section, and a basic study was conducted to evaluate the overflow capacity and calculate the flow coefficient. As a result of the analysis, the smaller the inflow angle of the transverse overflow, the lower the water level and flow rate of the main water flow after passing the transverse overflow, and the higher the inflow angle, the higher the water level and the flow rate. In addition, it was confirmed that the direct downstream flow rate decreased compared to the upstream flow rate when the inflow angle of the transverse overflow was 40° or higher.
A comprehensive DES quality numerical analysis has been carried out for reacting flows in constant-area and divergent scramjet combustor configuration with and without a cavity. Transverse injection of hydrogen is considered over a broad range of injection pressure. The corresponding equivalence ratio of the overall fuel-air mixture ranges from 0.167 to 0.50. The work features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the pervious studies. Much of the flow unsteadiness is related not only the cavity, but also to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flowfield. The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The roles of the cavity, injection pressure, and heat release in determining the flow dynamics are examined systematically.
The magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) pressure drop along a liquid sodium flow was measured in a rectangular duct under a transverse magnetic field. The test section was made of a 3 mm thick stainless steel SUS304 with a $74{\times}5mm^2$ rectangular flow channel. The range of experimental parameters was roughly B=0${\sim}$0.18T and U=0${\sim}$0.9m/s at around $200^{\circ}C$. The differential pressure was measured by a diaphragm seal-type pressure transmitter filled with a high temperature silicon oil within 0.1MPa. The experimental results show a similar pressure drop with the theoretical estimation according to a change of the flow velocity and the magnetic field.
