The Appropriatness of Government Support of Shipping Industry ; A General Equilibrium Approach (해운산업에 대한 정부지원의 타당성 검토)

  • In this study the economic impacts of government support of shipping industry in the labor rich country are appraised in a general equilibrium model. Shipping industry subsidies (which are supposed to be supplied by lump-sum tax) will decrease disposable income by shifting productive resources from traded goods to the comparatively disadvantageous transport sector, and at the same time reduce the implicit tariff effect by lowering transport costs. The net effect of shipping industry subsidies is to increase social welfare because the latter positive effect of shipping industry subsidies is to increase social welfare because the latter positive effect dominates the former negative effect. Such an increase in social welfare can never be expected from competitive traded goods industry subsidies in the case of which social welfare will actually decrease because of inefficient resource allocation resulting from the subsidies. In addition it is worth noting that the subsidies on the most capital intensive shipping industry will rectify unevenness in income distribution by raising relative price of labor contrary to subsidies on capital intensive traded goods.

Recent Developments and Future Prospects on Biofuels R&D

  • The transport biofuel is emerging a promising option to realize the sustainable growth of our society. Two biofuels, bioethanol and biodiesel, are currently used in the transport sector. As the production of biofuels is getting activated, the stable supply of the feedstocks is becoming a critical issue. Active works have been carried out to secure the stable supply of the raw materials for the production of biofuels. One approach is the breeding of the energy crops to get higher productivity and / or the desirable fuel properties. The other approach is finding new energy crops which may not be used for edible purpose. First current aspects and challenging issues for the implementation of biofuels have been introduced. Finally the recent works and future prospects on the development of the energy crops are summarized.

Analysis and Prospect of Export Trend of Air Cargo Market before and after COVID-19

  • Recently, the aviation industry faced a major crisis due to the impact of COVID-19. However, despite the sluggish passenger transportation, the cargo transportation sector is relatively maintained or increasing depending on the item. In this study, we will look at the trends before and after COVID-19, focusing on the cargo export field, which is a concern of the aviation industry. First, it analyzes the entire air cargo and then analyzes the trends of each item and country in detail. In particular, it examines the process of changes in air transport costs, which increased significantly immediately after COVID-19, and conducts future trends and prospects in the cargo export field. As a result of the study, some characteristics of air cargo exports before and after COVID-19 were found in an analysis by item and country, and transportation costs varied according to route distance.

  • We have compared here the seasonal average of the plasma density with the EPB occurrence in a given longitude sector, using KOMPSAT-1 and DMSP data. It could be evidenced on a global scale that the EPB occurrence was nearly anti-correlated with the poleward drift speed parallel to B-field, and with the degree of asymmetry of the latitudinal plasma distribution. But, the seasonal-longitudinal change of the asymmetry was different from what the current theory expected. (omitted)

  • Advanced biofuels are recognized as a key tool to mitigate the $CO_2$ emissions in the transport sector. Active R&D works have been carried out but there are still some major barriers to implement the technology. In this paper, recent developments on the advanced biofuels' technology are reviewed and the major barriers to commercialization of the biofuels will be discussed.

  • This study reviews maritime transport policy regarding liner conference and the changes in the liner market over the decades. Liner shipping industry has long been protected from competition by block exemption. To prevent excessive competition in punctual operation and its inelastic market structure, liner shipping companies formed conferences that are protected to fix the prices under the law. In the US, deregulation in transport sector began from 80's and continuing with OSRA 1998, conferences were dissolving. On the other hand, the EU with close conference system, Regulation 4056/86 contained block exemption remained in force for unlimited time without review clause. However, in Oct 2008, the EU has announced its removal, and conferences were no longer permitted to fix the price nor exchange information. Although OSRA 1998 has already broken up conferences by allowing individual service contracts, but the repeal of the immunity for price fixing will alter significantly the rule on cooperation in the industry since it is a unilateral move by the EU, especially in transatlantic lane. There are rapid changes in shipping market getting much more complicated, and with removal of 4056/86 allowing the market to be more competitive, opening up the industry with far more diverse strategic options. Hence this paper reviews on liner shipping industry and its changes of policies over the years from protected market to open competition market of today.

Estimation of Freight Trip Generation Rates based on Commodity Flow Survey in Korea

  • In Korea, almost 700 industrial parks are under operation. Generally, industrial parks consist of national industrial parks and local industrial parks which are managed by a central government and by local governments respectively. The developing countries such as Korea, China and Vietnam etc. have constructed many industrial parks, which result in the change of land use pattern and also affect future trip demands. Therefore, in estimating traffic demands, it is very important to consider the industrial park development. This study aims to improve the methodology in estimating a freight trip generation rate with the data based on a nationwide commodity freight survey. The result showed that it is desirable to apply freight trip generation rate by the industry sector in estimating freight trip generations and using the production area of firm as an indicator. Specially, the reliability of the rates through a survey could be made sure because a sample rate based on firms in industrial parks was over 25% and the response rate was over 67%. The sample rate and response rate are very superior as compared to surveys conducted in many other countries. Because industrial parks have significant effects on forecasting transportation demand in pre-feasibility studies of transport and logistics projects, it is expected that the accuracy of freight trip demands would be improved through the results of this study.

Gender Differences in Influence of Socio-demographic Characteristics on Mode Choice in India

  • The study aims to investigate differences between men and women in influence of various socio-demographic factors on choice of mode of transport. For this purpose, a binary logit model of choice probabilities is implemented on survey data of a developing country city. Results indicate women's choice of travel mode to be more environment-friendly than that of men. Well-educated, working and middle-aged individuals appear to be the most likely to choosing more-polluting modes of transport for frequent travelling purposes. Individuals in the sample who are the least socioeconomically well off are found the most likely to be promising for the environment. The findings of this study suggest the future transportation policies toward development of existing infrastructure of greener modes of transportation in the city such as, public transportation services and pedestrian lanes, so as to manage the rising issues of degrading environmental quality. The study highlights how the consideration and inclusion of socio-demographic factors is crucial for policy recommendation regarding curtailing the environmental damages contributed by transportation sector. Because mobility crucially affects all other indicators of empowerment, and women are the ones using green modes extensively, the city's transportation system should be so developed which gives their safety and security due importance.

Critical Factors Affecting the Choice of Logistics Service Provider: An Empirical Study in Vietnam

  • The trend of globalization leads an increased need for international freight transportation and accelerates the development of the international logistics industry. The objective of this paper is to identify the critical factors that affect the choice of logistics service provider (LSP). The data sample was collected through a questionnaire, responded by 218 companies that outsource logistics services. The analysis uses descriptive statistics; exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and regression analysis were conducted with SPSS. The role of capabilities, customer service, and company reputation were evaluated and tested. Our findings show that capabilities and customer service have a considerable impact on the choice of LSP. The findings also indicate that company reputation do not have significant impact on the choice of LSP. They also showed that the capabilities is the variable that has the most significant effect on the choice of LSP. An implication of this study is that the competition should not only focus on pricing, but should be extended to improving enterprises capabilities, i.e., upgrading human resources, modernizing the modes of transportation, expanding business geographically and developing new technologies. Our study provides LSP managers with insights into how to meet customer expectations in the competitive logistics service sector.

A Study on the Analysis of Carbon Emissions by Transportation Distance of Building Materials (건축자재 운송거리에 따른 탄소배출량 분석에 관한 연구)

  • As environmental problems around the world become serious, Korea has also raised the greenhouse gas reduction in the building sector to 32.8% compared to 2018, and efforts to reduce carbon in buildings are expanding. Recently, research is being actively conducted to reduce carbon in the long term by expanding the scope of greenhouse gas indirect emissions (Scope3), and even within the domestic Green Standard for Energy and Environmental Design(G-SEED) by quantitatively evaluating the environmental impact of buildings during the entire life cycle. However, it is difficult to accurately evaluate the carbon emission of the transportation process by assuming the material transport distance in the evaluation of the Life Cycle Assessment(LCA). Therefore, in this study, the main building materials of the building were selected through case evaluation and the carbon emission of the material transport process was derived based on the actual transport distance, and this was compared and analyzed with the theoretical LCA results.
