  • The generally accepted idea for carbohydrate translocation in plants is an osmotic pressure flow hypothesis. According to the hypothesis, a high concentration of carbohydrate in the phloem of carbohydrate synthesis regions (source) causes a water influx into the phloem. The generated osmotic potential in the phloem is responsible for long distance carbohydrate transport through the positive hydrostatic pressure. In regions of carbohydrate utilization and storage (sink), translocated carbohydrates are continuously metabolized and compartmentalized, generating a concentration gradient between source and sinks. In this system, carbohydrates load into the phloem (phloem loading) and unload out of the phloem (phloem unloading). Phloem-mobile herbicides that are applied to plants are also translocated from the source to sinks. However, some experimental results reveal that the patterns of phloem translocation between carbohydrates and herbicides are different. The differences are due, in part, to the physico-chemical properties of herbicides and to the absence/presence of specific carrier(s) in the phloem.

  • Prediction of turbidity due to fine-grained bed material load under wave action is critical to any assessment of anthropogenic impart on the coastal or lacustrine environment Waves tend to loosen mud deposits and generate steep suspension concentration gradients, such that the sediment load near the bottom is typically orders of magnitude higher than that near the surface. In a physically realistic but simplified manner, a simple mass conservation principle has been used to simulate the evolution of fine sediment concentration profiles and corresponding erodible bed depths under progressive, nonbreaking wave action over mud deposits. Prior field observations support the simulated trends. which reveal the genesis of a near-bed. high concentration fluidized mud layer coupled with very low surficial sediment concentrations. It is concluded that estimation of the depth of bottom erosion requires an understanding of mud dynamics and competent in situ sediment concentration profiling. Measurement of sediment concentration at the surface alone, without regard to the near-bed zone, can lead to gross underestimation of the erodible bed depth.

  • The sedimentation processes and heavy metal distributions at the Nakdong estuary were investigated during October 1987 and September 1988. The depositional sedimentary environment of the studied area was estuarine environments and was divided into three provinces depending on its textural parameters such as barrier, tidal falt, and water passes. The relationship between the textural parameters showed that the barrier was under strong wave action, that the tidal flat was under relatively weak wind-driven currents, and that the water passes were under strong and continuous tidal currents. Each environments was resulted from different transport mechanism. the sand barrier sediments were transported by all three populations including suspension, saltation, and bed load, and water pass-deposited sediments were by the bad load with some suspension population. In water mass over the studied area, the concentrations of heavy metals including Cu, Cd, $Cr^{+6}$, Pb and Zn were recorded to be 27.8, 6.7, 20.4, 16.3, and 37.3 ppb in their highest concentrations, respectively. and those in sediments were 20.0, 1.65, 25.4, 15.4, and 132.0 ppm, respectively. The total up take factored of Cu, Cd, $Cr^{+6}$, Pb, and Zn by V. Muller (corbicula fluminea) were 1600, 310, 310, 490 and 7900, respectively.

  • To investigate the concentrations and transport patterns of particulate metals in river suspended matters, eighteen samples were collected from a fixed station located in the upper part of the Keum River through one year, and analysed for major elements (AI, Fe, P, Mn) and trace elements (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, U). The contents of metals in suspended particulate matters (SPM) varied greatly with season and SPM load; maximum value in winter with low SPM level and minimum value in flood period and in spring Yangtze SPMs. The different trace metal level between rivers of Korea and China may be caused by the different geology of drainage basin(U) and by the different extent of anthropogenic input (Mn, Pb). Most of all particulate metals (>70%) except Mn, P and Cd were transported in the flood period with high water discharge and high suspended load. The magnitude of each transport phase (dissolved, non-detrital and detrital metals) was compared. The portions of labile metals (dissolved plus non-detrital metals) in the aquatic environment were in the range of 50%(Co) to 92%(Mn) of total metal transport and in the rank of Mn>Cd, U>Cu>Zn>Ni>Pb>Co.

  • Recently, securing a vast land in the land region becomes more difficult and efforts to seek its alternation in the sea area have been increased. As a consequence, the coastal region has been faced to extensive beach erosion problems. In planning offshore structures such as artificial islands, it is necessary to forecast the influence of the structure construction exerting on the beach erosion of the adjacent coast. In the present study, the sediment movement pattern behind offshore structure was examined through a series of three dimensional movable bed experiments, so as to develop the numerical model which forecasts morphological change including beach erosions. The experimental results reveal that the sediment movement patterns of the beach line side and the depth region are separated at a certain boundary line. In details, at the beach side including swash zone the sediment movement becomes dominant, which is governed by a relation between depth contours and incident wave directions, while at the depth region the bed load and suspended load due to the orbit motion of waves are carried by nearshore currents, and both movements are clearly separated at a specified boundary that is related to partial standing wave from the beach. It is expected that these results can be effectively used for verification of a numerical model on morphological change of the coast.

  • Mooring survey for measurement of tidal current and suspended sediments was carried out at 4 inlets of Yeoja Bay in April, 2000 in order to understand the source of sediment supply. Net suspended sediment transport load during 2 tidal cycles through the M-1(West Inlet) was $133.88\;kg{\cdot}m^{-1}$ toward the Yeoja Bay, whereas the flux through the M-2(Jabal Inlet) was outward the Bay with the amount of $146.43\;kg{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The influx through the M-3 and 4(Bulgyo and Dong Isa Stream) was $23.25\;kg{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and $4,312.31\;kg{\cdot}m^{-1}$ toward the Yeoja Bay, respectively. Influx of suspended sediment on Yeoja Bay mainly occurred in the Dong Isa Stream. In the wet season the composition of surface was coarser-grained than dry season, possibly due to the influx of silty sediment from Dong Isa Stream In the wet season.

  • The results of residual currents simulation by a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model showed the water volume transport and the residence time to be about 4km³ per tidal cycle and about 6 years through the line of latitude, 34° 25' N in the Yellow Sea, and to be about 13km³ per tidal cycle and about 2.5 years through the southeastern boundary line of the Yellow Sea, respectively. On the bases of the entire seawater volume of the Yellow Sea and dissolved oxygen (DO) in summer, the environmental capacity of the Yellow Sea for reception of the maximum pollution load without reducing DO concentration below 5.0mg/ℓ in seawater may be estimated to be about 58×10/sup 6/tons of chemical oxygen demand (COD), which is equivalent to the load about 8 times as high as the annual organic pollution load from 14 major rivers. On the bases of DO transports by residual currents calculated on the line of 34° 25' N latitude and on the southeastern boundary line of the Yellow Sea being about 57×10³tons and about 203×10³tons of DO per day, respectively, the environmental capacities of the Yellow Sea for reception of the maximum pollution loads without reducing DO concentration in seawater nay be equivalent to COD loads about 3 times and 10 times, respectively, as high as the existing organic pollution loads from 14 major rivers.

  • As progress on image processing, computer vision and display technologies aroused market's interests on generation and consumption of various types of media, interests on UWV media are also increasing. In context of consumption of UWV media, to effectively manage load of servers and resources of end terminal devices and provide user-derived services, technology which enables users to select and consume interested regions of media seems to be needed. Here, this paper proposes a method for description and transmission of spatial relationships among media, which composes UWV, by expanding MPEG-CI and Layout signaling to enable users' selective consumption of UWV media.

  • Fish aggregating devices(FAD) or artificial fish reefs deployed in the ocean space have been developed in various forms. The objective of FAD is to aggregate, cultivate and proliferate aquatic resources by making changes in ocean flows around it. developing spawning grounds, improving feeding areas and protecting larvae and juveniles. Most floating fish aggregating devices(FFAD) are in the form of surface buoys or subsurface buoys with a single point mooring system(SPMS). The mooring line of SPMS for the secure positions of FFAD is expected to keep great stresses as a result of the harsh ocean environment. Laboratory static tests on synthetic fiber ropes used for the SPMS were run. The Nylon wet rope specimen tests under increasing-and-decreasing loads showed about 20% strength drop. Also the logarithmic creep-tie behavior of fiber ropes was observed in the constant load test and compared with Flessner's formula.

  • Traditional IP routing, see only the Destination Address When Forwarding Layer 3 routing and exchange information and Destination-Based Routing Lookup is required for all Hop. Thus, all routers Full Internet routing information, the route information of more than about 120,000 may require. Therefore, the router configuration, which can be dispersed in the environment, the traffic load is required in accordance with this congestion. In this study, a unique characteristic of the Internet in the environment of an existing network Best Effect for QoS guarantee and hardware high speed switching of large multimedia data transmitted using a Labeling for forwarding a packet environment configuration is required. Video Stream Broadcast Transport Labeling rather than in much of the higher performance of the multi-step policy to most of the Video Stream Packet deulim was fixed to Labeling Header Format proposes a method of applying an effective QoS policy to a more simplified policy.
