  • For abnormal weather disaster and building constructions, the shading stress could occur in crops more often. Those shading stress can effect on rice growth characters. Therefore, we investigated the shading effect on rice growth characters. Shading treatments were treated using shading screen as 35, 55, 75 and 100%. To check the shading effect on rooting after transplanting, shading stress treated after transplanting for 20 days as 35, 55 and 75%, And 35, 55, 75 and 100% of shading were treated 60 days after transplanting to check the growth characters. After transplanting, the shading stress effected on leaf and root growth. At 19 days after transplanting, leaf number reduced by shading stress. In 35, 55 and 75% shading stress, the leaf number reduced as 0.38, 0.45 and 0.9 respectively compared to control treatment. And root length was also reduced as 0.39, 0.6 and 1.93 cm respectively compared to control treatment. The plant height was slightly increased in 35 and 55% and reduced in 100%. Leaf growth speed per day was reduced as 0.0167 according to shading stress. And root growth speed also reduced as 0.0426 according to shading stress. The shading stress during vegetative stage effected on plant height and tiller number. In 35, 55 and 75% of shading stress, the plant height was slightly increased but it was reduced in 100%. Tiller number was significantly reduced by shading stress. According to 10% of shading stress, about 7% of the tiller number was reduced. However, leaf color did not change by the shading stress. The leaf area in 2nd to 4nd leaf from new leaf reduced as 297 and 1044 in 75 and 100% of shading stress and increased as 70 and 99 in 35 and 55%. These leaf area change was affected by both the length and width of the leaf.

  • The aim of this study was to solve the problem of yield loss causing the lag of fertilizer efficiency after tiller stage, being originated by applying mixed expeller cake fertilizer on three day before rice transplanting in organic rice farmers. The mineralization degree of $NH_4-N$ of the mixed expeller cake fertilizer was increased until 7 weeks at flooding condition, and so did $NO_3-N$ until 5 weeks at non-flooding condition. The mineralization rate of nitrogen in paddy soil on 20 days before rice transplanting was the highest by 0.85% on 20 days before the transplanting treatment. The properties of yields during the harvest period have no difference with application time of the mixed expeller cake fertilizer, except soil organic matter. The plan length, culm length and panicle length were the longest on 20 days before rice transplanting. Also, the number of tiller, ripening rat and 1,000 grain weight were the highest on 20 days before rice transplanting, and thereby the yield of white rice were increasing by 9% on 20 days before rice transplanting compared with that of 3 days before rice transplanting. The whiteness values of the rice and amylose content made no difference, but the value of protein and palatability were the same between 20 days and 30 days treatment. In the conclusion, the relationship between rice yield, its quality and application time of the mixed expeller cake fertilizer has showed that the suitable time of applying it reveals 21.3 days before rice transplanting.

  • This experiment was carried out to find out the responses of the growth characteristics to various air temperature in a high yielding indica/japonica rice cultivar, 'Dasanbyeo'. Five different transplanting dates with 30 day-old seedlings were tried to induce various environmental conditions, starting from 10th May to 19th June in the interval of 10 days at National Crop Experiment Station, in 1998. Planting densities with different plants per hill but same hill spacing were tested. The daily mean air temperature during 30 days after transplanting was 19.0, 20,8, 21.9, 24.4 and 25.2$^{\circ}C$ when transplanted on the 10th May, the 20th May, the 30th May, the 9th June and 19th June, respectively. The number of tillers per hill at 30 days after transplanting was affected by the daily mean air temperature during 30 days after transplanting. The higher the daily mean air temperature, the more tillers per hill at 30 days after transplanting were. The growth duration from transplanting to heading was greatly changed according to the transplanting dates. It was shortened as the transplanting date was delayed until transplanted on the 9th June, but it was prolonged when transplanted on the 19th June compared to that of the 9th June. The number of panicles per hill increased with the increase of the transplanted plants per hill up to 7 plants per hill. The number of panicle per unit area was closely related to the number of tillers per unit area at maximum tillering stage. It was found that the average effective temperature during first 10 tiller formation related to the days to the tenth tiller formation with the relationship of y = 1.071x$^2$ - 37.307x + 342.38($R^2$ = 0.9823).

  • Two rice varieties, Samkangbyeo and Sangpungbyeo, were transplanted on 1/2000a pots at 6 different dates beginning on May 11 with 10 day interval in 1987 and at 4 different dates beginning on May 21 with 10 day interval in a paddy field at the Chungbuk Provincial Rural Development Administration. Dry matter distributions to stem and leaf sheath, leaves and ear at different growth stages were analyzed to provide basic informations neccessary for the development of dynamic growth model. Dry matter production was reduced as transplanting was delayed and the degree of reduction was greater at the transplanting later than June 1. Dry matter distribution to stem and leaf sheath was increased up to 60-70 days after transplanting with the maximum ratio between 60-70%, which were decreased to 37-43% in pots and 27-33% in field at the end of ripening stage. On the other hand, dry matter distribution to leaf blade was decreased from 40-50% at transplanting to 11-17% at harvesting. Ear dry matter distribution increased rapidly after heading and the distribution ratio was 42-49% in pots and 52-62% in field. Although regression equations to predict dry matter distribution to different parts of rice plant were satisfactory for individual experiment, the application to different experiment was not appropriate.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth of grafted cucumber seedlings in biodegradable paper pot trays influenced by seedling age, nutrient management before transplanting, and night temperature after transplanting. Grafted cucumber seedlings in paper pot trays were supplied with different nutrient solution concentrations of 0.5 x full strength (S) (EC $0.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$), 1.0S(EC $1.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$), 2.0S(EC $3.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$) two times a week until transplanting. 26, 33, 40, and 47 day-old cucumber grafted seedlings were transplanted and grown at three levels of night temperature (10, 15, and $25^{\circ}C$) during ten days. Increasing nutrient solution concentration enhanced the shoot length, number of leaves, leaf area, dry weight, and relative growth rate of seedlings. With increasing seedling age, the differences in growth were greater among nutrient treatments. The dry matter percentage increased with the seedling age, but was lower with higher nutrient concentration. The specific leaf area showed the opposite results. In cucumbers transplanted at 26- or 33-day seedling ages, night temperature did not affect the growth at ten days after transplanting. However, the growth of 40 or 47 day-old seedling decreased at $10^{\circ}C$. Compared with $25^{\circ}C$, the dry weight of cucumbers transplanted at 40- or 47-day seedling ages was depressed by 58% or 71%, respectively, at $10^{\circ}C$. Accordingly, it was concluded that the optimum nutrient solution concentrations and seedling age for the production of grafted cucumber seedlings in biodegradable paper pot trays can be 1.0S and about 30 days, respectively, and night temperature should be maintained at the range of $15-25^{\circ}C$ for promoting the growth after transplanting.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the interaction between productivity and light condition and to analyze the material productivity and productive charactaristics under different hours of light in Zoysia japonica. 1. Rate increasement of leaf number and total leaf length was remarkably high at the early growth stage in the control and 9 hour light treatment. The rate gradually decreased as growth proceeded. But 3 hour treatment was very low in the rate from its early growth stage through the whole test period. 2. The increasing rate of leaf area ratio (LAR) in all the experimental plots was remarkably high at the early growth stage after transplanting the grass. The shorter photoperiod resulted remarkable lower increasement of LAR. 3. The rhizome growth rate of the 9 hour photoperiod was high contrast to the 3 hour photoperiod treatment. The increasing rate of node number was also showed similar trend. 4. Chlorophyll content was very high at the 36 days after transplanting and then decreased gradually. Chlorophyll content on 3 hours photoperiod plot severely decreased. The ratio of chlorophyll a to b was decreased significantly at short day treatment. 5. The content of soluble sugar was increased at shorter photoperiod. The highest ratio of sugar content was on August, 28 by HPLC method. Such a result was attributed to accumulation of sugar in spite of low synthesis of ploysacchrides, translocation by low consumption. 6. The increasing rate of standings in all light treatment was high at the early growth stage after transplanting. Short photoperiod treatment by 3hour showed especially low prganic productivity on Zoysia japonica.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of soil, cultural practices and climatic conditions on some chemical constituents of flue-cured tobacco. Increasing the nicotine and total nitrogen contents may be useful to reduce the total sugar content of cured leaves in flue-cured tobacco. Delaying the transplanting date and increasing the soil nitrogen($N0_3-N$ and $N0_4-N$) content for 30 days after transplanting by fertilizing are desirable so as to increase the nicotine and total nitrogen contents of cured leaves. Those treatments will delay the ripeness, and elongate the duration of cultivation(day from transplanting to harvesting), and increase the fresh leaf weight. Moderate rainfall in April and May, lower relative humidity in June, and higher mean daily air temperature in June and July seem to be necessary for good leaf of flue-cured tobacco in Korea.

  • Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) is generally sown in late autumn and harvested in early summer in Korea, however, spring cultivation has also been attempted in some areas because frequent climate changes induce reducing productivity. Therefore, there is a need for a transplanting technology that is relatively easy to control of cropping season according to changes in cultivation conditions. In this study, to find out the optimal characteristics of seedlings for machine transplanting of spring cultivation, seedling morphological characteristics were investigated according to the seedling age of three varieties for 2020 and 2021. The hypocotyl length was less than 2 cm in both years and the 40-day-old seedling was the shortest among all seedling ages. The number and size of leaf were increased with longer seedling age in both years. To evaluate seedling quality, total seedling length, seedling weight, and impact resistance were measured before transplanting. Total seedling length was the longest in 40-day-old seedlings and the shortest in 25-day-old seedlings in both years. In the case of seedling weight, no significant differences were observed depending on the seedling age and the impact resistance increased with increasing seedling age. Finally, 'Jungmo7001', 'Naehan', and 'Tamla' showed a high transplanting rate in seedlings grown for more than 30 days, 35 days, and 40 days, respectively, in the field using a general transplanter. These results suggest that the proper seedling age for transplanting is limited depending on the rapeseed varieties. The suitable seedling cultivation method can be selected for different cultivation environments.

  • This Study was designed to know the growth Status under various photoperiod using Zoysia matrella. The experimental plots were split into such groups as control (full sunlight) 3hour, 6hour and 9hour photoperiod by three replication of completely randomized design. Chlorophyll content was analyized by mackine method and total soluble sugar by anthrone method. The result obtained from this experiment was as fol1 lows ; l. Dry weight was high in the control and 9hour plots. Its decrease remarkably occured in the short day plots 2. Leaf growth woes remarkaly decreased by short day condition. Six hour was considered as critical duration for leaf growth. 3. The growth of rhizome in the 9hour and control plots was good. New development of rhizome in the' short day plots was very slow compare to the control plot. 4. Chlorophyll content was high at l8 days after transplanting and then decreased. Its content in the short day plots severely decreased. 5. The content of soluble sugar in the control was low at early growth stage and high at late growth stage. It was found that the shorter the exposure time to sunlight, the higher the ratio of sugar content.

  • The study was done to determine the proper transplanting dates and seedling ages of rice when mechanical transplanting was attempted. Heading dates of the Milyang #23, developed from Tong-il rice was delayed by delayed transplanting and the percent of filling grain was also low. The proper heading dates for the variety should be the first part of August and the transplanting should be done by the end of May. The presumed last days for the transplantation was considered early part of June. 30 to 40 days old seedlings were very effective to have healthy rooting systems. However, the Milyang #15 had shown more tolerance to the late transplantation than Milyang #23 and the degree of delaying heading dates due to the delayed transplantation was rather smaller than that of the Milyang #23. Even when the Milyang #15 was transplanted on June 30, the heading dates were around the middle of August and the ripening percentage was comparatively high and yield was also high. Therefore, the proper heading dates of the Milyang #15 might be around the middle of August and transplanting dates should be the first part of June. The possible last dates of transplantation of the Milyang #15 was assumed to be the last days of June and the proper seedling ages would be 20 to 30 day after sowing.
