  • After alumina sol was prepared by Yoldas process supported membranes were fabricated by adding ce and Re solution and SiO2 sol into alumina sol. The particle size of alumina sol was 11 nm and it was monodispersed transparent and stable for long time. The pore size of un-doped membrane started to increase to about 7,5nm at 1000$^{\circ}C$ and it was grown to twice (about 15nm) at 1100$^{\circ}C$ However the pore size of doped alumina was uniform to 1100$^{\circ}C$. The effect of retardation of grain growth was superior in SiO2 addition to that of Ce and Ru Because SiO2 doped samples transformed to needed-like phase and densified at 1200$^{\circ}C$ their application in membranes was limited. Ce and Ru doped sample showed vermicular structure identical to the un-doped ones at 1200$^{\circ}C$ But the particle size was smaller than that of un-doped ones.

  • The conductive transparent film is prepared by spraying thin salt solution. In stannic chloride solution as a base solution, various dopants such as Al, Co, Cu and Ni were dissolved respectively as a chloride state and then the films were made by spraying solutions on hot glass plates. The properties of them were compared with those of the stannic salt single component film. The films doped with copper oxide and nickle oxide were improved by decreasing their sheet resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity. In comparison with the sheet resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity of stannic oxide single component film, being 2.5 K ohm/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and -1650ppm/$^{\circ}C$ respectively, its values of the film containing 15 mol % of copper oxide and formed at 40$0^{\circ}C$ were 2.5K ohm/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and -920ppm/$^{\circ}C$ respectively. The film containing 15 mol % of nickel oxide and formed at 50$0^{\circ}C$ has shown its sheet resistivity and temperature coefficient 0.7 K ohm/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and -940ppm/$^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • The effect of catalytic condition on the properties of SiO2 aerogels has been investigated and then the dri-ed aerogels were partially densified to induce mechanical strength by heat treatment in order to prepare Type-VI silica by Sol-Gel method. Aerogel made by 1-step base process had the highest skeletal density lowest shrinkage and the smallest particle size. But in case of using acid catalyst in both 1st and 2nd step had the lowest skeletal density highest shrinkage and the largest particle size The aerogel synthesized by 1-step base process was most transparent because of its homogeneous microstructure. During heat treatments cracks occurred below 200$^{\circ}C$ for aerogel with the skeletal density lower than 1.9 g/cm3 but the with the higher skeletal density did not cracked up to 800$^{\circ}C$ shrinkage and skeletal density increased as heating temperature increased due to condensation and viscous sintering mechanism.

  • Corundum single crystals were grown in cryolite flux with the composition of Na3AlF6:Al2O3=80:20 wt%. This mixture was melted at 115$0^{\circ}C$, followed by slow cooling at a rate of 2$^{\circ}C$/hr to 96$0^{\circ}C$. And by adding of La2O3 to the flux, the change of crystal forms were observed. Crystal forms of corundum grown in cryolite flux had the habits of hexagonal plate which consist of well developed {0001} face and small {101} face. As La2O3 was added and its content was increased, {223} and {110} faces were developed, and crystal habits of equidimensional forms changed into hexagonal prism form. In a charge of 8 mole% B2O3, Al2O3:La2O3=15:1, transparent corundum single crystals of equent form were grown. As the content of B2O3 was increased, twineed crystals which have twin law of 2-fold parallel to [0001], and composition plane of (110) were grown.

  • PLZT ceramics of composition La/Zr/Ti=X/65/35(X=5-10 at.%) were fabricated by two state sintering technique.Transparent PLZT ceramics were obtained in the composition above 8 at. % La. Variations of electrooptic properties in the compositions between 8 at. % and 9 at. % La were able to be expected from the significant differences of P-E hysteresis curve and the changes of dielectric phase transition. The range of birefringence of 8/65/35 specimen was 4.08${\times}$10-3. Domain switching of 9/65/35 specimen was agreed with the applied electric pulse because input pulse signal corresponds to optical pulse response.

  • Recently semiconductor doped glasses have attracted attention as nonlinear optical materials because of their large third order nonlinear optical properties. The transparent and homogeneous CdS-doped SiO2 glass thin films were obtained by the dip=coating process of the sol-gel method. Thin films were consisted of glasses containing CdS microcrystallites which were formed by dissolved Cd2+ and S2- ions in a SiO2 matrix solutions. A subsequent thermal treatment of this samples led the formation of colloidal agglomerates and finally of microcrystallites. The size of CdS microcrystallites was about 4 to 15 nm after thermal treatments at various heating conditions. From the optical absorption spectra of the CdS-doped SiO2 glass films it was found that the absorption edge was blue-shifted compared with that of the bulk CdS crystal(~2, 4 eV) and that the amount of energy shift was inversely proportional to the crystal size. And the band gap energy increased with the decrease in crystallite size indicating that the quantum size effects occured.

  • Transparent Al2O3 and TiO2 clear sols prepared by hydrolysis and subsequent peptization were mixed into wet gel. EDS analysis for this gel showed that wet gel was extremely homogeneous in chemical composition. Calcination of the wet gel at 120$0^{\circ}C$ for 50 minutes resulted in Al2O3-TiO2 nanocomposite powders where TiO2 particles of 101~102 nanometer were dispersed in the Al2O3 matrix. Both powders were sintered for 4 hours in the temperature range over 1500~1$650^{\circ}C$ with and without 5wt% MgO sintering aid. Among these sintered bodies, nanocomposite powder compacts sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours with 5wt% MgO showed the most dense structure with the grain size under 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and highest relative density of 98.2%.

  • Transparent, crack-free dried gel monoliths with a composition of LiZr1.5Si2P2O12.5 have been synthesized by the low temperature polymerization of the Sol-Gel technique using metal alkoxides as starting materials. After initial reaction (20~40 min), each metal alkoxide closely paralleled each other during the hydrolysis reactions. The safe drying conditions of gels with no creaks the control of the shrinkage rate. The gels converted into the glass by heat treatment at 75$0^{\circ}C$. FTIR data indicated that the gels were phase separated into silicarich and phosphate-rich regions with the lithium. XRD results showed the formation of crystalline LiH2PO4. The gels dried at 15$0^{\circ}C$ or fired at 75$0^{\circ}C$ contained the residual water. The high ionic conductivity at room temperature for these gels was attributed to the motion of protons.

  • The TEA complex polymeric sol was prepared by the alkoxide sol-gel method. The purpsoe of this experiment was to vefity the particle shape in the sol from the investigation of the rheological properties. TEA retarded hydrolysis rate by the reaction with alkoxide enough to make a stable transparent sol in the wide range of composition. From the results of the viscosity change with time, the optimum mole ratio for spinning was selected as 0.5 mole of TEA, 3 mole of H2O and the optimum viscosity was 104 cPs. The rheological behavior of the sol showed that the particle shape in the sol was linear, which was adequate for fiber drawing.

  • Monodispersed colloidaly yttria(Y2O3) can be used in a variety of applications such as phosphors. IR transparent materials and fine ceramics. For preparing monodispersed yttria homogeneous precipitation has been regarded as a fovorable method that is monodispersed yttria can be obtained through calcining monodispersed colloidal compound of yttrium (eg:Y(OH)CO3.nH2O)which can be prepared by homogeneous precipitation with urea. It is however still required to find out the quantitative effects of important variables of precipitation such as concentration of yttrium and urea reaction temperature and initial pH of reactant even though homogeneous precipitation of Y3+ with urea has been studied extensively. Among the effects of these variables we investiga-ted 1) the effect of yttrium concentration on the shape and size of precipitate and the reation rate 2) range of yttrium concentration required to make monodispersed colloidal particles 3) the reason for limited concentra-tion range of yttrium and 4) the effect of ultrasonic radiation on the limited concentration.
