CSCM upwind flux difference splitting compressible Navier-Stokes method has been used to predict the transonic flows in centrifugal compressor diffuser. The modified cyclic TDMA and the mass flux boundary conditions were used as boundary conditions of the diffuser analysis. With the mass flux boundary condition and the $130{\times}80{\times}40$ grid, the compressible upwind Navier-Stokes method predicted the transonic diffuser flowfield successfully. Plow changes in the impeller exit region due to the strong interaction between impeller exit and vaned diffuser, broad flow separation on the suction surface near hub and shroud was observed from the results of the mass flow rates 6.0 and 6.2kg/s at 27000 rpm. The static pressure increased and the total pressure decreased through the flow passage of the channel diffuser, which were predicted better from the three-dimensional analysis than from the two-dimensional analysis due to the strong effect of the three-dimensional flow. The mass averaged loss coefficients and pressure coefficients were also studied.

An assessment of two-equation turbulence models, the low Reynolds k-${\varepsilon}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST models, with the compressibility corrections proposed by Sarkar and Wilcox, has been performed. The compressibility models are evaluated by investigating transonic or supersonic flows, including the arc-bump, transonic diffuser, supersonic jet impingement, and unsteady supersonic diffuser. A unified implicit finite volume scheme, consisting of mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations, is used, and the results are compared with experimental data. The model accuracy is found to depend strongly on the flow separation behavior. An MPI (Message Passing Interface) parallel computing scheme is implemented.
CSCM upwind flux difference splitting compressible Navier-Stokes method has been used to predict the transonic flows in a centrifugal compressor diffuser. The modified cyclic. TDMA and the mass flux boundary conditions were used as boundary conditions of the diffuser analysis. Broad flow separation on the suction surface near the hub and shroud was observed from the results of the mass flow rates 5.8, 6.0 and 6.2kg/s at 27000 rpm. The three-dimensional flow analysis predicted successfully that the static pressure increased and the total pressure decreased through the flow passage of the channel diffuser when compared to two-dimensional analysis due to the strong effect of the three-dimensional flow. The mass averaged loss coefficients and pressure coefficients were also studied.
A three-dimensional CSCM upwind flux difference splitting Navier-stokes code with two-equation turbulence models was developed to predict the transonic flows in centrifugal compressor diffuser. The k-$\epsilon$ model of Abe et al. performed well in predicting the pressure distribution in the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction. Three turbulence models predicted the similar distribution of static pressure through the diffuser and showed a good agreement with the experimental results. The secondary flows in the corner were predicted well by these turbulence models. The pressure increase before the throat of the diffuser vane is important for the overall pressure recovery. As the mass flow rate increased the blockage decreased at the throat. The pressure coefficient distribution through the diffuser depended on the throat blockage not on the rotational speed of the impeller.

In the present paper, a transonic mixed-flow compressor that has relatively lower frontal area than that of centrifugal compressors is discussed, and aerodynamic design as well as performance prediction are performed. Main design constraints are compressor exit Mach number of 0.3 and flow angle of 30degrees at the design point, and maximum overall compressor diameter of 177mm, that is 7.0inch. The mass flow rate of design point and pressure ratio are 1.05kg/s and 5.2:1, respectively. The aerodynamic design results show that the transonic compressor designed with forward-swept inducer and curved diffuser can have the target performance with efficiency of 75% within the given constraints. And the compressor exit flow characteristics are discussed here.

This study presents the aerodynamic design and numerical analysis results on a transonic centrifugal compressor which is used for gas turbine systems. Mean-line analysis and quasi-3D analysis are used for the aerodynamic design, and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis is applied to flow analysis of the compressor. The aerodynamic parameters for a transonic compressor, such as pressure coefficient, swirl parameter, blade loading, are discussed, and flow characteristics in the impeller and diffuser are discussed.

Experiments of normal shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction were conducted in a supersonic diffuser. The flow Mach number just upstream of the normal shock wave was in the range of 1.10 to 1.70 and Reynolds number based upon the turbulent boundary layer thickness was varied in the range of 2.2*10$^{[-994]}$ -4.4*10$^{[-994]}$ . The wall pressures in streamwise and spanwise directions were measured for two test cases, in which the turbulent boundary layer thickness incoming into the supersonic diffuser was changed. The results show that the interactions of normal shock wave with turbulent boundary layer in the supersonic diffuser can be divided into three patterns, i.e., transonic interaction, weak interaction and strong interaction, depending on Mach number. The weak interactions generate the post-shock expansion which its strength is strong as the Mach number increases and the strong interactions form the pseudo-shock waves. From the spanwise measurements of wall pressure, it is known that if the flow Mach number is low, the interacting flow fields essentially appear two-dimensional, but they have an apparent 3-dimensionality for the higher Mach numbers.
How is the flow in a rotating impeller. About 35 years have passed since one experimentalist rotating with the impeller. of a huge centrifugal blower made the flow measurements using a hot-wire anemometer (Fowler 1968). Optical measurement methods have great advantages over the intrusive methods especially for the flow measurement in a rotating impeller. One is the optical flow visualization (FV) technique (Senoo, et al., 1968) and the other is the application of laser velocimetry (LV) (Hah and Krain, 1990). Particle image velocimetries (PIVs) combine major features of both FV and LV, and are very attractive due to the feasibility of simultaneous and multi-points measurements (Hayami and Aramaki, 1999). A high-pressure-ratio transonic centrifugal compressor with a low-solidity cascade diffuser was tested in a closed loop with HFC134a gas at 18,000rpm (Hayami, 2000). Two kinds of measurement techniques by image processing were applied to visualize a flow in the compressor. One is a velocity field measurement at the inducer of the impeller using a PIV and the other is a pressure field measurement on the side wall of the cascade diffuser using a pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measurement technique. The PIV was successfully applied for visualization of an unsteady behavior of a shock wave based on the instantaneous velocity field measurement (Hayami, et al., 2002b) as well as a phase-averaged velocity vector field with a shock wave over one blade pitch (Hayami, et al., 2002a. b). A violent change in pressure was successfully visualized using a PSP measurement during a surge condition even though there are still some problems to be overcome (Hayami, et al., 2002c). Both PIV and PSP results are discussed in comparison with those of laser-2-focus (L2F) velocimetry and those of semiconductor pressure sensors. Experimental fluid dynamics (EFDs) are still growing up more and more both in hardware and in software. On the other hand, computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) are very attractive to understand the details of flow. A secondary flow on the side wall of the cascade diffuser was visualized based either steady or unsteady CFD calculations (Bonaiuti, et al.,2002). EFD and CFD methods will be combined to a hybrid method being complementary to each other. Measurement techniques by image processing as well as CFD calculations give a huge amount of data. Then, data mining technique will become more important to understand the flow mechanism both for EFD and CFD.

Recently, KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Korea) and CIAM(Central Institute of Aviation Motors, Russia) have made an effort in developing a centrifugal compressor for a small gas turbine engine as part of a collaboration program. This compressor has been designed as a sub-component for an axial-centrifugal compression system for a small turbo-shaft engine aiming adiabatic efficiency higher than 0.81. The geometrical design requirement imposes restrictions to have high inlet hub-to-tip ratio and inlet swirl flow. In this study, the compressor has been designed using the generalized experimental data established from those compressors having pressure ratio of 3.7 to 5. From this generalized empirical correlation, desirable values of design parameters could be obtained. Subsequently, quasi-3D and 3D viscous flow analyses have been performed to ensure the adopted methodology. It is expected that the centrifugal compressor provides total pressure ratio of 4.89, corrected mass flow-rate of 1.64kg/sec, and adiabatic efficiency of 0.815 with inlet hub-to-tip ratio of 0.641. These relatively high total pressure ratio and inlet hub-to-tip ratio are the main distinctive features in this design. Besides, one of the main features of this centrifugal compressor is the adoption of a double-row bladed diffuser to effectively decelerate the transonic flow leaving the impeller. The compressor has been manufactured and will be tested in the near future.
