  • This paper deals with damage detection in a girder bridge using transmissibility functions as input data to Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The original contribution in this work is that these two novel methods are combined to detect damage in a bridge. The damage was simulated in a real bridge in Vietnam, i.e. Ca-Non Bridge. Finite Element Method (FEM) of this bridge was used to show the reliability of the proposed technique. The vibration responses at some points of the bridge under a moving truck are simulated and used to calculate the transmissibility functions. These functions are then used as input data to train the ANNs, in which the target is the location and the severity of the damage in the bridge. After training successfully, the network can be used to assess the damage. Although simulated responses data are used in this paper, the practical application of the technique to real bridge data is potentially high.

  • Structural damage identification (SDI) methods have been proposed to monitor the safety of structures. However, the traditional SDI methods using modal parameters, such as natural frequencies and mode shapes, are not sensitive enough to structural damage. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a new SDI method based on transmissibility assurance criterion (TAC) and weighted Schatten-p norm regularization. Firstly, the transmissibility function (TF) has been proved a useful damage index, which can effectively detect structural damage under unknown excitations. Inspired by the modal assurance criterion (MAC), TF and MAC are combined to construct a new damage index, so called as TAC, which is introduced into the objective function together with modal parameters. In addition, the weighted Schatten-p norm regularization method is adopted to improve the ill-posedness of the SDI inverse problem. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, some numerical simulations and experimental studies in laboratory are carried out. The results show that the proposed method has a high SDI accuracy, especially for weak damages of structures, it can precisely achieve damage locations and quantifications with a good robustness.

  • Although the use of silicone hydrogel contact lenses which are known to have high oxygen transmissibility is increasing, they are being sold without any product labeling of physical properties such as water content and oxygen transmissibility. To analyze the physical properties such as the water content and oxygen transmissibility of approved silicone hydrogel contact lenses, this study collected and analyzed the approval information published on the KFDA website. Of 68 cases of domestic silicone hydrogel contact lenses analyzed in this study, 61 cases (89.7%) did not meet the international standard for oxygen permeability. This is because lenses that are not different from hydrogel contact lenses were submitted for approval as silicone hydrogel contact lenses because there is no domestic standard for silicone hydrogel contact lenses. In future, besides the information published on the website, analysis of the physical properties of a wide variety of actual silicone hydrogel contact lenses on the market is required.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze for resonant frequency, vibration transmissibility and damping ratio of multi-layered corrugated structures using a random vibration test. Methods: The random vibration test was performed by the ASTM D4728 specifications using two paperboards (S120, K180) and two types of flutes (A/F, B/F). Damping ratio of the multi-layered corrugated structures was estimated using a theoretical equation derived from the measured resonant frequency and transmissibility. Results: The resonant frequency and vibration transmissibility of the multi-layered corrugated structures of K180 and B-flute were higher than those of S120 and A-flute, respectively; however, the damping ratio of each sample had the opposite tendency. The resonant frequency was inversely proportional to the sample thickness and static stress; vibration transmissibility and damping ratio were not correlated with sample thickness and static stress. In addition, we developed a mathematical model of the resonant frequency with variables of sample thickness and static stress. Conclusions: Results of this study can be useful for environment-friendly and optimal packaging design since vibration has been a key factor in cushioning packaging design.

  • As environmental vibration requirements on precision equipment become more stringent, use of pneumatic isolators has become more popular and their performance is subsequently required to be further improved. Performance of passive pneumatic isolators is related to various design parameters in a complicated manner and, hence, is very limited especially in low frequency range by chamber volume. In this study, transmissibility behavior of the pneumatic isolators depending on frequency and dynamic amplitude are presented. Then, an active control technique, time delay control, which is adequate for a low frequency nonlinear system, is applied. A procedure of applying the time delay control law to a pneumatic isolator is presented and it's effectiveness in the transmissibility performance is shown. Comparison between passive and active pneumatic isolators is made based on simulation.

  • The shock performance of hard disk drives has been a serious issue for portable computers and AV application HDD. Focusing on the motion of an actuator, we investigated non-operational shock mechanism and studied several parameters that affect the shock performance by experimental analysis. It was found that there are two important factors fort the actuator to endure high shock revel. One is a shock transmissibility and the other is a beating between the arm blade and the suspension. To generalize the shock transmissibility, the concept of shock response spectrum was introduced. The shock response spectrum of the actuator system was obtained experimentally and compared with that of an analytical single degree of freedom model. It was found that there was a good agreement. The first bending natural frequency of the arm blade was found to be the most important factor for the low shock transmissibility. By applying the shock response spectrum and avoiding the beating, we could design an actuator of high shock performance.

  • This is the second of two companion papers concerned with the analysis and design of a pneumatic vibration isolation system. The properties of the system are clarified by observation of the transmissibility surface calculated by the models and algorithm developed in the first paper of this research. It Is shown that the nonlinear model proposed in this research is more closer to experimental results than the linear model that have been used in previous studies. The design optimization of the major design variables that affect the performance of the system is achieved by using the condition for attenuation, disturbance rejection and maximum damping in resonance peak. The design space search method is adopted for the optimization of the orifice area. The models, transmissibility calculation algorithms and design optimization techniques developed in this research are shown to be greatly helpful to the optimal design of the pneumatic vibration isolation system by experiment.

  • This study developes the vibration model to estimate the vibration energy of damper/spring assembly(mainbase assembly) for car CD player, and this model is verified by experiment. From frequency response, response, we investigate the natural frequency and mode shape in the up/down direction. In order to determine the analysis frequency band, we investigate the excitation frequency from the vehicle test. As the characteristics of damper and spring is changed, we carry out the vibration test(transmissibility) and investigate the change of transmissibility.
