  • In this paper, the RCF(Resistive Companion Form) analysis method which is used to analyze small signal stability problems of non-continuous systems including switching devices. The RCF analysis method is mathematically rigorous and computes eigenvalue of the system periodic transition matrix based on discrete system analysis method. As an effect of switching operations, the eigenvalues of the systems are changed and newly unstable oscillation modes may be occurred. As an illustrating example, the oscillation modes of the system with different switching time intervals are computed exactly by the RCF analysis method and the results show that ON/OFF time intervals of switching equipments are important factors to make the system stable or unstable. This result shows that the RCF analysis method is very powerful to analyze small signal stability problems of power systems including switching devices such as FACTS equipments.

  • A calculation method of the dipole moments for square planar and tetrahedral complexes by the valence bond method has been developed and an example calculation was carried out choosing the square planar and tetrahedral $[M(Ⅱ)N_2Se_2]$ type complexes. The calculated values of the dipole moments by the valence bond method are higher than those of the approximate orbital method. We found that we may predict the geometric structure of the transition metal complexes comparing the calculated values of the dipole moments with the experimental values. A new method for definition of C' parameter has also developed on the basis of extended Huckel theory.

  • A method is presented of dynamic determination of mode transition probability for IMM in order to improve the accuracy performance of maneuvering target tracking for air traffic control surveillance processing system under multiple radar environment. It is shown that dynamic determination of mode transition probability based on the time intervals between the data input from multiple radars gives the optimized performance in terms of position estimation accuracy.

  • In mission planning of UAV applications, especially for the missions requiring height transitions, it is required to generate reference flight trajectories considering the performances of the engine installed in the UAV. Even though the vertical line following guidance based height transition trajectory generation method has been developed to build reference height transition trajectories easily, it is not adequate for considering engine performances effectively since many engine characteristics and performances have conventionally been described in the V-H(speed-height) plane which is not the very space where the UAVs are actually flying. In this paper, we derive the trajectories in V-H plane for the vertical line following flights. And based on the results, a new algorithm to design the reference height transition trajectories for UAV applicaions. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is very effective and easily applicable.

  • To evaluate the wear characteristics of very thin ceramic coated layer, it is very important to investigate its wear process in great detail. An effective method for investigating the wear of a thin layer is the observation of wear process in microscopic detail, using in-situ system. In this study, based on the SEM Tribosystem as in-situ system, the microscopic wear mode of TiN coatings was investigated in repeated sliding. Consequently, four modes were revealed for TiN coatings: Ploughing, powder formation, flake formation and coating delimitation. Sc(Severity of contact) can clarify transition condition of those microscopic wear modes.

  • It has been long suspected that the transition region may give rise to local pressure fluctuations and radiated sound that are different from those created by the fully-developed turbulent boundary layer at equivalent Reynolds number. Experimental investigation described in this paper concerns the characteristics of pressure fluctuations at the transition. Flush-mounted microphones and hot wires are used to measure the pressure fluctuations and local flow velocities within the boundary layer in the low noise wind tunnel. From this experiment we could observe the spatial and temporal development process of T-S wave using Wigner-Ville method and find the relations between the characteristic frequency of T-S wave and free stream velocity and the boundary layer thickness based on nondimensional pressure spectra scaled on outer variables.

  • Markov chain models can be used to predict the state of the system in the future. We extend the existing Markov chain models in two ways. For the stationary model, we propose a procedure that obtains the transition probabilities by appling the empirical Bayes method, in which the parameters of the prior distribution in the Bayes estimator are obtained on the collaternal micro data. For non-stationary model, we suggest a procedure that obtains a time-varying transition probabilities as a function of the exogenous variables. To illustrate the effectiveness of our extended models, the models are applied to the macro and micro time-series data generated from actual survey. Our stationary model yields reliable parameter values of the prior distribution. And our non-stationary model can predict the variable transition probabilities effectively.

  • Transition of flows in natural convection in a horizontal cylindrical annulus is investigated for the fluid with Pr=0.2. The unsteady streamfunction-vorticity equation is solved with finite difference method. As Rayleigh number is increased, the steady crescent-shaped eddy flow bifurcates to a time-periodic flow with like-rotating eddies. After the first Hopf bifurcation, however, a reverse transition from oscillatory to a steady flow occurs by the flow pattern variation. Hysteresis phenomenon occurs between the solution branches of up-scan and down-scan stages, and dual solutions with one steady and one oscillatory flow are found. Overall Nusselt of the flows at the flows at the down-scan stage is greater than that at the up-scan stage.

  • The transition zone between railway embankment and structures, or different track types is known to be an area in which problems often arise and where extra care needs to be taken with maintenance. Differences in track stiffness have dynamic effects and these increase the force in the track and the extent of deformation. In this study, the criteria for the change ratio of track stiffness along transition area, and proper transition length are presented through train/track interaction analyses. Those are derived on the basis of permissible limitations of train and track performances such as rail stress, uplift force of fastener, reduction of dynamic wheel force, and acceleration of car body. A feasible method of evaluation of track stiffness which is necessary when a designer reviews whether the criteria are satisfied or not is also presented.

  • Fault Tree Analysis(FTA) builds fault trees to perform safety analysis of systems. However, building fault trees depends on domain knowledge and expertize on target systems and consumes lots of time and efforts. In this paper, we propose a technique that builds fault trees systematically based on state-transition models which are software design artifacts. For the end, this paper identifies conditions that should be satisfied to guarantee safety of state-transition models and develop templates for fault tree construction. This paper also describes the results of appling the proposed method to railway crossing control system.
