This paper aims at presenting the state of the art, the recent progress, and the perspective for the future, in the modelling of two-phase flow in the horizontal legs of a PWR. All phenomena relevant for safety analysis are listed first. The selection of the modelling approach for system codes is then discussed, including the number of fluids or fields, the space and time resolution, and the use of flow regime maps. The classical two-fluid six-equation one-pressure model as it is implemented in the CATHARE code is then presented and its properties are described. It is shown that the axial effects of gravity forces may be correctly taken into account even in the case of change of the cross section area or of the pipe orientation. It is also shown that it can predict both fluvial and torrential flow with a possible hydraulic jump. Since phase stratification plays a dominant role, the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and the stability of bubbly flow regime are discussed. A transition criterion based on a stability analysis of shallow water waves may be used to predict the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Recent experimental data obtained in the METERO test facility are analysed to model the transition from a bubbly to stratified flow regime. Finally, perspectives for further improvement of the modelling are drawn including dynamic modelling of turbulence and interfacial area and multi-field models.
For super long-span bridges, the aerodynamic forces induced by the flow passing the box girder should be considered carefully. And the Reynolds number sensitively of aerodynamic characteristics is one of considerable issue. In the study, a numerical study on the Reynolds number sensitivity of aerodynamic characteristic (flow pattern, pressure distribution and aerodynamic forces) of a twin-box girder were carried out using large eddy simulation (LES) with the dynamic Smagorinsky-Lilly subgrid model. The results show that the aerodynamic characteristics have strong correlation with the Reynolds number. At the leading edge, the flow experiences attachment, departure, and reattachment stages accompanying by the laminar transition into turbulence, causing pressure plateaus to form on the surface, and the pressure plateaus gradually shrinks. Around the gap, attributing that the flow experiences stages of laminar cavity flow, the wake with alternate shedding vortices, and turbulent cavity flow in sequence with an increase in the Reynolds number, the pressures around the gap vary greatly with the Reynold number. At the trailing edge, the pressure gradually recovers as the flow transits to turbulence (the flow undergoes wake instability, shear layer transition-reattachment station), In addition, at relative high Reynolds numbers, the drag force almost does not change, however, the lift force coefficient gradually decreases with an increase in Reynolds number.

A study on the transitional boundary layer with arbitrary pressure gradient under various upstream conditions is very important for engineering applications like the performance predictions of the turbomachineries under various and strong disturbances. Experimental data on the transitional boundary layer for real cascades of the turbomachinery are rare because of difficulties in boundary layer experiments. Flow on NACA0012 airfoil is more similar to the real case than that on the flat plate with which many researches are done. The data of the transitional flow on the airfoil could be used to verify or to develop a turbulence model for numerical simulations. The experiment was performed with two cases of Reynolds number at a=0$^{0}$ and one case of Reynolds number at a=5$^{0}$ . The measured data are the transition length and the wall shear stresses. These two characteristic values are measured within 25%~90% of the airfoil chord by Computation Preston tube Method(CPM) proposed by Nitsche et al.(1983). At a=0$^{0}$ , transition occured at 70% and 55% of chord length when R $e_{c}$=6*10$^{5}$ and 8* 10$^{5}$ , respectively. It started when R {\theta}=500 regardless of R $e_{c}$, and ended when R {\theta}=750, and 850 respectively. The transition length was 15~20% of the chord length. At a=5$^{0}$ (R $e_{c}$=6*10$^{5}$ ), boundary layer on the pressure side does not undergo transition, but on the suction side transition occured at .chi.$_{c}$/c=0.16 and ended at .chi.$_{c}$/c=0.22.c//c=0.22./c=0.22.c//c=0.22.
The unsteady transitional boundary layer due to rotor-stator interaction was studied at two operation points, the design and one off design points. The off design point leads to lower blade loading and lower Reynolds number. A Navier-Stokes code developed in the previous study was parallelized to expedite computations. A low Reynolds number turbulence model was used to close the momentum equations. All computations show good agreement with experimental data. The wake induced transitional strip on the suction side of the stator is clearly captured at design point operation. There is no noticeable change in shape and phase angle of the wake induced strip even in the laminar sublayer. The wake induced transitional strip at off design point shows more complex structure. The wake induced transitional strip is observed only in the turbulent layer, and becomes obscure in the laminar sublayer and buffer layer. This behavior is probably consequent upon that the transition is governed by both wake induced strip and natural transition mechanism by Tollmien-Schlichting wave.

Numerical analysis was carried out by applying the concept of E-D(expansion-deflection) nozzle to dual bell nozzle. We used the CEA code to calculate the chemical composition of the nozzle and to analyze the freezing flow of 8 species. The turbulence model was chosen as the $k-{\omega}$ SST. We applied the concept of E-D nozzle to the dual bell nozzle and performed the calculated transition altitude and performance. As a result of the interpretation, the application of the E-D nozzle concept led to the formation of over-expansion conditions, which resulted in an increase in the transition altitude.

In this study, the effect of surface roughness distribution and its influence on the inflight icing code was investigated. Previous numerical studies focused on the magnitude of surface roughness, and the effects were only addressed in terms of changes in thermal boundary layers with fully turbulent assumption. In addition, the empirical formula was used to take account the turbulent transition due to surface roughness, which was regarded as reducing the accuracy of ice shape prediction. Therefore, in this study, the turbulent transition model based on the two-equation turbulence model was applied to consider the effects of surface roughness. In order to consider the effect of surface roughness, the transport equation for roughness amplification parameter was applied, and the surface roughness distribution model was implemented to consider the physical properties. For validation, the surface roughness, convective heat transfer coefficient, and ice shape were compared with experimental results and other numerical methodology. As a result, it was confirmed that the excessive prediction of the heat transfer coefficient at the leading edge and the ice horn shape at the bottom of the airfoil were improved accordingly.
The comparison of two commercial codes(FLUENT and STAR-CCM+) and an open-source code(OpenFOAM) are carried out for the aerodynamic analysis of flight vehicles at low speeds. Tailless blended-wing-body UCAV, main wing and propeller of HALE UAV(EAV-3) are chosen as geometries for the investigation. Using the same mesh, incompressible flow simulations are carried out and the results from three different codes are compared. In the linear region, the maximum difference of lift and drag coefficients of UCAV are found to be less than 2% and 5 counts, respectively and shows good agreement with wind tunnel test data. In a stall region, however, the reliability of RANS simulation is found to become poor and the uncertainty according to code also increases. The effect of turbulence models and meshes generated from different tools are also examined. The transition model yields better results in terms of drag which are much closer to the test data. The pitching moment is confirmed to be sensitive to the existence and the location of transition. For the case of EAV-3 wing, the difference of results with ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model is increased when Reynolds number becomes low. The results for the propeller show good agreement within 1% difference of thrust. The reliability and uncertainty of three codes is found to be reasonable for the purpose of engineering use. However, the physical validity and reliability of results seem to be carefully examined when ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST model is used for aerodynamic simulation at low speeds or low Reynolds number conditions.

Highly over-expanded nozzle of the rocket engines will be excited by non-axial forces due to flow separation at sea level operations. Since rocket engines are designed to produce axial thrust to power the vehicle, non-axial static and/or dynamic forces are not desirable. Several engine failures were attributed to the side loads. Present work investigate the unsteady flow in an over-expanded rocket nozzle in order to estimate side load during a shutdown/starting. Numerical computations has been carried out with density based solver on multi-block structured grid. Present solver is explicit in time and unsteady time step is calculated using dual time step approach. AUSMDV is considered as a numerical scheme for the flux calculations. One equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is selected. Results presented here is for two nozzle pressure ratio i.e. 100 and 20. At 100 NPR, restricted shock separation (RSS) pattern is observed while, 20 NPR shows free shock separation (FSS) pattern. Side load is observed during the transition of separation pattern at different NPR.

A numerical analysis has been conducted to study the transient flowfield during the transition from the booster to sustainer phase in an integrated rocket ramjet (IRR) propulsion system. Emphasis is placed on the unsteady inlet aerodynamics, fuel/air mixing in an entire ramjet engine during the flow transient phase. The computational geometry consists of the entire IRR engine, including the inlet, the combustion chamber, and the exhaust nozzle. Turbulence closure is achieved using a low-Reynolds-number two-equation model. The governing equations are solved numerically by means of a finite-volume, preconditioned flux-differencing scheme over a wide range of Mach umber. Various important physical processes are investigated systemically, including terminal shock train.
We investigate 3D radiation-hydrodynamics (RHD) for surface convection of the solar-type low-mass stars (M = 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0 Msun). The outer convection zone (CZ) of low-mass stars is an extremely turbulent region composed of partly ionized compressible gases at high temperature. Particularly, the super-adiabatic layer (SAL), the top of the CZ is the transition region where the transport of energy changes drastically from convection to radiation. In order to accurately describe physical processes, a realistic treatment of radiation should be considered as well as convection. As a starting model, the initial stratification in the outer envelope calculated using the solar calibrations in the context of the standard stellar theory. When the numerical fluid becomes thermally relaxed, the thermodynamic structure of the steady-state turbulent flow was explicitly collected. In this presentation, we compared thermodynamic properties of turbulent convection of the solar-type low-mass stars.
