When a cold HPSI (High pressure Safety Injection) fluid associated with an overcooling transient, such as SGTR (Steam Generator Tube Rupture), MSLB (Main Steam Line Break) etc., enters the cold legs of a stagnated primary coolant loop, thermal stratification phenomena will arise due to incomplete mixing. If the stratified flow enters the downcomer of the reactor pressure vessel, severe thermal stresses are created in a radiation embrittled vessel wall by local overcooling. As general thermal-hydraulic system analysis codes cannot properly predict the thermal stratification phenomena, RG 1.154 requires that a detailed thermal-mixing analysis of PTS (pressurized Thermal Shock) evaluation be performed. Also. previous PTS studies have assumed that the thermal stratification phenomena generated in the stagnated loop side of a partially stagnated primary coolant loop are neutralized in the vessel downcomer by the strong flow from the unstagnated loop. On the basis of these reasons, this paper focuses on the development of a 3-dimensional thermal-mixing analysis model using PHOENICS code which can be applied to both partial and total loop stagnated cases. In addition, this paper verifies the fact that, for partial loop stagnated cases, the cold plume generated in the vessel downcomer due to the thermal stratification phenomena of the stagnated loop is almost neutralized by the strong flow of the unstagnated loop but is not fully eliminated.
An experimental study on thermal mixing of steam jet condensation through the I-Sparger of APR1400 design using B&C (Blowdown and Condensation) test facility. Due to the limit of the steam supply capability of the pressurizer, transient thermal mixing experiments were conducted. Temperature distributions in the quench tank were measured using thermocouples located at various positions. From the experimental data, local temperature variations for various locations and vertically cross-sectional temperature distributions for several times were depicted and presented. The result shows the characteristics of thermal mixing of the I-Sparger depending on the design features of the I-Sparger.

A flow field in a passage with periodically converging-diverging cross-section is investigated experimentally by PIV measurement. A tube with a sinusoidally wavy cross section is one of several devices employed for enhancing the heat and mass transfer efficiency due to turbulence promotion and unsteady vortical motion. While the numerical flow visualization results have been limited to the fully developed cases, existing experimental results of this flow were simple qualitative ones by smoke or dye streak test. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to produce quantitative flow data for fully developed and transient flow regime by the Correlation Based Correction PIV (CBC PIV) and to conjecture the analogy between flow characteristics and heat transfer enhancement with low pumping power. Another purpose of this paper is to examine the onset position of the transition and the global mixing, which results in transfer enhancement. At Re=2000, evidences of the global mixing are captured at 2.5 wavy module through the variation of RMS values and instantaneous velocity plot.
A sub-channel solver, named ${\underline{S}}teady$ and ${\underline{T}}ransient$${\underline{A}}nalyzer$ for ${\underline{R}}eactor$${\underline{T}}hermal$ hydraulics (START), has been developed using the homogenous model for two-phase conditions of light water reactors. The code is developed as a fast and accurate TH-solver for coupled and multi-physics calculations. START has been validated against the NUPEC PWR Sub-channel and Bundle Test (PSBT) database. Tests like single-channel quality and void-fraction for steady state, outlet fluid temperature for steady state, rod-bundle quality and void-fraction for both steady state and transient conditions have been analyzed and compared with experimental values. Results reveal a good accuracy of solution for both steady state and transient scenarios. Axially different values for turbulent mixing coefficient are used based on different grid-spacer types. This provides better results as compared to using a single value of turbulent mixing coefficient. Code-to-code evaluation of PSBT results by the START code compares well with other industrial codes. The START code has been parallelized with the OpenMP algorithm and its numerical performance is evaluated with a large whole PWR core. Scaling study of START shows a good parallel performance.

To invetigate the impurity distribution in GaAs crystal grown by horizontal Bridgman method, we constructd the mathematical model describing heat transfer, mass transfer and fluid flow n transient growth of GaAs. Galerkin finite element method and implicit time integration were used to solve the equations and simulate the transient growth. The concentration distribution is similar to the case of diffusion controlled growth when Gr - 0. With the increase of Gr the concentration profile is distroted and the minimum solute concentration appears near the interface. As solidification prosceeds, interface deflection increases steadily and transverse segregation increases until mixing by flow becomes steady. The axial segregation increases with solidification. But, with high intensity of flow axial segregation becomes steady after short transient. At small and large Gr the result showed a good agreememt with the prediction Smith and Scheil.

The main outcomes of the experiments H2P6 performed in the thermal-hydraulics large-scale PANDA facility at PSI in the frame of the OECD/NEA HYMERES-2 project are presented in this article. The experiments of the H2P6 series consists of two PANDA tests characterized by the activation of three (H2P6_1) or one (H2P6_2) cooler(s) in an initially stratified and pressurized containment atmosphere. The initial stratification is defined by a helium-rich region located in the upper part of the vessel and a steam/air atmosphere in the lower part. The activation of the cooler(s) results i) in the condensation of the steam in the vicinity of the cooler(s), ii) the corresponding activation of large scale natural circulation currents in the vessel atmosphere, with the result of iii) the re-distribution and mixing of the Helium stratification initially located in the upper half of the vessel and iv) the continuous pressure decay. The initial helium layer represents hydrogen generated in a postulated severe accident. The main question to be answered by the experiments is whether or not the interaction of the different, localized cooler units would be important for the application of numerical methods. The paper describes the initial and boundary conditions and the experimental results of the H2P6 series with the suggestion of simple scaling laws for both experiments in terms of i) the temperature difference(s) across the cooler(s), ii) the transient steam and helium content and iii) the pressure decay in the vessel. The outcomes of this scaling indicate that the interaction between separate, closely localized units does not play a prominent role for the present experiments. It is therefore reasonable to model several units as one large component with equivalent heat transfer area and total water flow rate.
A CFD benchmark calculation for a steam blowdown test was performed for 30 seconds to develop the methodology of numerical analysis for the thermal mixing between steam and subcooled water. In the CFD analysis, the grid model simulating the sparger and the IRWST pool were developed by the axisymmetric condition and then the steam condensation phenomena by a direct contact was modelled by the so-called condensation region model. Thermal mixing phenomenon in the subcooled water tank was treated as an incompressible flow, a free surface flow between the air and the water, a turbulent flow, and a buoyancy flow. The comparison of the CFD results with the test data showed a good agreement as a whole, but a small temperature difference was locally found at some locations. The commercial CFD code of CFX4.4 together with the condensation region model can simulate the thermal mixing behavior reasonably well when a sufficient number of mesh distribution and a proper numerical method are adopted.

Radiation-induced oscillatory instability in diffusion flames is numerically investigated with nonlinear dynamics considered. As the simplest flame model, a diffusion flame established in the stagnant mixing layer is employed with optically thin gas-phase radiation and unity Lewis numbers for all species. Attention is focused on the radiation-induced extinction regime, which occurs at large $Damk\ddot{o}hler$ number. Once the steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of the initial $Damk\ddot{o}hler$ number, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of the $Damk\ddot{o}hler$-number perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Transient evolution of the flame exhibits three types of flame-evolution behaviors, namely decaying oscillatory solution, diverging solution to extinction and stable limit-cycle solution. A dynamic extinction boundary is identified for laminar flamelet library.
Sintering behavior of 2xxx series Al alloy was investigated to obtain full densification and sound microstructure. The commercial 2xxx series Al alloy powder. AMB2712, was used as a starting powder. The mixing powder was characterized by using particle size analyzer, SEM and XRD. The optimum compacting pressure was 200 MPa, which was the starting point of the "homogeneous deformation" stage. The powder compacts were sintered at $550~630^{\circ}C$ after burn-off process at $400^{\circ}C$. Swelling phenomenon caused by transient liquid phase sintering was observed below $590^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature. At $610^{\circ}C$, sintering density was increased by effect of remained liquid phase. Further densification was not observed above $610^{\circ}C$. Therefore, it was determined that the optimum sintering temperature of AMB2712 powder was $610^{\circ}C$.}C$.

A numerical procedure is introduced to calculate local ventilation effectiveness using the definitions of local decay rate and local mean age. A low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ model is implemented to calculate steady state turbulent velocity distributions, and a step-down method is used to calculate transient concentration distributions. Simulations are carried out for several different values of air change rates and several different diffuser angles in a two-dimensional model of a half scale office room. The results show that the local ventilation effectiveness within a room could vary significantly from one location to another. The nominal air change rate based on the assumption of complete mixing of room air does not provide the local ventilation effectiveness information. It is numerically proved that the local mean age distribution obtained from the transient calculation is equivalent to the steady state concentration distribution with homogeneously distributed contaminant sources.
