Consolidation in cohesive soils mainly focuses on compressibility of soils, but it affects solute transport in some cases. The consolidation process takes on particular significance for fine grained soils at high water content, such as dredged sediments, but has also been shown to be important for compacted clay liners during waste filling operation. Numerical investigation using CST1 and CST2 was reviewed on consolidation-induced solute transport in this paper, especially with the development of CST2 model, verification by comparing experimental results with numerical simulations, and cases studies regarding transport in a confined disposal facility (CDF) and during in-situ capping. The importance of the consolidation process on solute transport is accessed based on simulated concentration or mass breakthrough curves. Results indicate that neglecting transient consolidation effects may lead to significant errors in transport analyses, especially with soft contaminated cohesive soils undergoing large volume change.

A new model, the periodic transient storage zone model, is developed to describe solute transport mixing in natural streams and rivers with various bottom boundaries. To assess the effects of storage zones structure on transient storage exchange, we analyze data from salt and dye injection experiments in a recirculating laboratory flume with four spatially periodic pool-riffle sequences characteristic of natural river systems under low flow conditions. Dye injections show that solute transport mixing controlled by surface shapes of both the bed and the side in channels. As no existing transient storage model could represent these effects, we developed a new axially periodic transient storage zone model that better represent the effects of channel characteristics in natural river systems. The new model is also fitted to data from salt tracer injection experiments in four reaches of the upper Sabin River, Texas, USA. The proposed model is in good agreement with the field experimental data.
In this study, a 1-D laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the characteristics of transient unsaturated solute transport by using two kinds of soils of which properties were known by test. Especially the TDR method which is proposed in this study was used to measure water content and solute concentration. As results, in the transient flow, the wetting front moves down rapidly, and the distribution of solute concentration near the wetting front showed the similar type of the water content distribution(semi-bell type). A numerical model HYDRUS was used to compare with the experimental results. Numerical results for the water movement are similar to experimental result. However, numerical results of the distribution of solute concentration are more scattered than experimental results. It means that measured dispersivity, numerical dispersion, adsorption coefficient, and soil sample size etc. should be considered in order to determine the dispersivity used in the numerical model. The present measuring method was proved to be superior to other formula and to be an available method to apply to solute transport test. The measuring error of the developed method is estimated smaller than 10% while water content is larger than 0.15.
Monitoring solute transport has been known to be difficult especially for the unsaturated soil. The object of this study is to investigate the TDR application to monitoring solute concentration in the vadose zone. The TDR calibration test was conducted for soil samples with various water contents and concentrations. The voltage attenuation of electromagnetic wave of TDR was used to estimate the bulk electrical conductivity of a soil. The relationship between the bulk soil electrical conductivity and the solute concentration was assumed to be linear at a constant volumetric soil water content. In this study four proposed relationships were compared using data obtained from KCI solution at three different concentrations. Relationships given by Topp, Daltaon, Yanuka showed the linearity between the bulk soil electrical conductivity and the solute concentration, which were more pronounced than Zegelin's. The three relationships were found to be useful to measure the solute concentration in the vadose zone. In addition, TDR method was proven to be a viable technique in monitoring solute transport through unsaturated soils in transient flow condition.

The one-dimensional solute transport models have been developed for recent decades to predict behavior and fate of solutes in rivers. Transient storage model (TSM) is the most popular model because of its simple conceptualization to consider the complexity of natural rivers. However, the TSM is highly dependent on its parameters which cannot be directly measured. In addition, the TSM interprets the late-time behavior of concentration curves in the shape of an exponential function, which has been evaluated as not suitable for actual solute behavior in natural rivers. In this study, we suggested a stochastic approach to the solute transport analysis. We delineated the model development and model application to a natural river, and compared the results of the proposed model to those of the TSM. To validate the proposed model, a tracer test was carried out in the 4.85 km reach of Gam Creek, one of the first-order tributaries of Nakdong River, South Korea. As a result of comparing the power-law slope of the tail of breakthrough curves, the simulation results from the stochastic storage model yielded the average error rate of 0.24, which is more accurate than the 14.03 and 1.87 from advection-dispersion model and TSM, respectively. This study demonstrated the appropriateness of the power-law residence time distribution to the hyporheic zone of the Gam Creek.
Time profile of the transient grating signal induced by a nanosecond pulsed laser excitation of methyl red is investigated in alcohols and toluene at several solvent temperatures. The signal decays biexponentially with well-separated time constants; the faster decay is identified as due to thermal diffusion of the solvents and the slower one as mainly due to translational diffusion of the solute. The measured translational diffusion constants of methyl red in toluene are close to a hydrodynamic prediction with a slip boundary condition while those in alcohols are larger by 30% and increase slightly with the size of alcohols. We compare the results with modified hydrodynamic models.
Previously developed empirical equations used to calculate the parameters of the transient storage model are analyzed in depth in order to evaluate their behavior in representing solute transport in the natural streams with storage zone. A comparative analysis of the existing theoretical and experimental equations used to predict parameters of the transient storage (TS) model is reported. New simplified equations for predicting 4 key parameters of the TS model using hydraulic data sets that are easily obtained in the natural streams are also developed. The weighted one-step Huber method, which is one of the nonlinear multi-regression methods, is applied to derive new parameters equation. These equations are proven to be superior in explaining mixing characteristics of natural streams with the transient storage zone more precisely than the other existing equations.

Since the first introduction of one-dimensional transient storage modeling in the field of solute transport analysis in rivers, its application has notably expanded for various purposes, including for hydrology and geobiology over the past few decades. Despite strides in refining transient storage models, there remain unresolved challenges in simplifying complex river transport dynamics into concise formulas and a limited set of parameters. This review paper is dedicated to cataloging and assessing existing transient storage models, outlining the difficulties associated with model structures, parameters, and data, and suggesting directions for future research. We seek to enhance understanding of transient storage by highlighting the importance of continuously evaluating residence time distribution modeling, integrating hydrodynamic models, and using data with minimal assumptions. This paper would contribute to advance our comprehension of the transient storage process, offering insights into sophisticated modeling techniques, pinpointing uncertainty in parameters, and suggesting the necessary avenues for further study.
Numerical simulations for fluid flow and solute transport in a fracture rock masses are performed by using a transient flow model, which is based on the three-dimensional stochastic and discrete fracture network model (DFN model) and is coupled hydraulic model with mechanical model. In the numerical simulations of the solute transport, we used to the particle following algorithm which is similar to an advective biased random walk. The purpose of this study is to predict the response of the tracer test between two deep bore holes (GPK1 and GPK2) implanted at Soultz sous Foret in France, in the context of the geothermal researches.l The data sets used are obtained from in situcirculating experiments during 1995. As the result of the transport simulation, the mean transit time for the non reactive particles is about 5 days between two bore holes.
To evaluate behavior in representing solute transport in natural streams, the storage zone model of the axially periodic transient storage zones is developed. The periodic transient storage zone model and continuous storage zone model are verified using the parameters and the tracer concentration vs. time curves observed in laboratory channels. The periodic storage zone model best fit the measured concentration vs. time curves, while the continuous storage model fails to describe some fluctuations and the plateau region of the tail occurring in a discontinuous transient storage system. Dispersion data from Shingobee River, Minnesota, U. S. A. show that the concentration curves simulated by the proposed model fit the observed concentration curves well.
