  • In order to build a transient simulation program for a high thrust liquid rocket engine(LRE), a static performance simulation program for components were made. The components were the thrust chamber (combustion chamber and supersonic nozzle), centrifugal pump (impeller and volute casing), impulse turbine, and flow control devices (control valve and orifice). Simplified mathematical models based on classical thermodynamic and inviscid theories were used to remove complexity and enhance the utility of the program. We examined the results of each program qualitatively for validate each component modeling.

  • Retinal bipolar cells according to the light stimulus respond to potential slowly, emit neurotransmitter release(glutamine acid) to depend on membrane potential. In this paper, the several physiological information on neurotransmitter release mechanism in the presynaptic terminal of the ON-type bipolar cells are incorporated into the formula model. The source of fast components and slow components of neurotransmitter release was arranged in parallel, this model was able to reproduce the membrane potential and intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration dependence of neurotransmitter release faithfully. In addition, because the fast releasable components of neurotransmitter was represented by the membrane potential dependence of trapezoid type, whereas the slow releasable components was represented by the membrane potential dependence of a bell type, $Ca^{2+}$ concentration rise in intracellular is suppressed by $Ca^{2+}$ buffer to reduce slow releasable components, it was confirmed that the membrane potential dependence of neurotransmitter release was characteristics of a trapezoid type. And, in the light response of ON type bipolar cell, the result of the simulation of the neurotransmitter release caused by the components of transient and persistent was that the start of light response occurred the fast release of neurotransmitter, it was confirmed that the transient component and persistent component of the light response occurred the slow release. It was confirmed that the later of persistent component of the light response occurred due to the continuous release by synaptic vesicle supplemented from the storage pool.

  • In order to effectively protect electrical and electronic circuits which are extremely susceptible to lightning surges, multi-stage surge protection circuits are required. This paper presents the operational characteristics of the two-stage hybrid surge protection circuit in extra-low voltage DC power lines. The hybrid surge protective device consists of the gas discharge tube, transient voltage suppressor, and series inductor. The response characteristics of the proposed hybrid surge protective device to combination waves were investigated. As a result, the proposed two-stage surge protective device to combination wave provides the tight clamping level of less than 50V. The firing of the gas discharge tube to lightning surges depends on the de-coupling inductance and the rate-of-change of the current flowing through the transient voltage suppressor. The coordination between the upstream and downstream components of the hybrid surge protective device was satisfactorily achieved. The inductance of a de-coupler in surge protective circuits for low-voltage DC power lines, relative to a resistance, is sufficiently effective. The voltage drop and power loss due to the proposed surge protective device are ignored during normal operation of the systems.

  • A $C^{\circ}$ continuous finite element formulation of a higher order displacement theory is presented for predicting linear and geometrically non-linear in the sense of von Karman transient responses of composite and sandwich plates. The displacement model accounts for non-linear cubic variation of tangential displacement components through the thickness of the laminate and the theory requires no shear correction coefficients. In the time domain, the explicit central difference integrator is used in conjunction with the special mass matrix diagonalization scheme which conserves the total mass of the element and included effects due to rotary inertia terms. The parametric effects of the time step, finite element mesh, lamination scheme and orthotropy on the linear and geometrically non-linear responses are investigated. Numerical results for central transverse deflection, stresses and stress resultants are presented for square/rectangular composite and sandwich plates under various boundary conditions and loadings and these are compared with the results from other sources. Some new results are also tabulated for future reference.

  • A time-domain combined field integral equation (CFIE) is presented to obtain the transient scattering response from arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional conducting bodies. This formulation is based on a linear combination of the time-domain electric field integral equation (EFIE) with the magnetic field integral equation (MFIE). The time derivative of the magnetic vector potential in EFIE is approximated using a central finite difference approximation and the scalar potential is averaged over time. The time-domain CFIE approach produces results that are accurate and stable when solving for transient scattering responses from conducting objects. The incident spectrum of the field may contain frequency components, which correspond to the internal resonance of the structure. For the numerical solution, we consider both the explicit and implicit scheme and use two different kinds of Gaussian pulses, which may contain frequencies corresponding to the internal resonance. Numerical results for the EFIE, MFIE, and CFIE are presented and compared with those obtained from the inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) of the frequency-domain CFIE solution.

  • This paper presents the design of acoustic resonance free and over current limit during transient state consideration electronic ballast for 1.5kW Metal-Halide Lamp(MHL) that employs frequency modulation (FM) technique. The proposed ballast consists of a Full-Bridge(FB) rectifier, a passive power factor correction (PFC) circuit, a full-bridge inverter, an ignitor using LC resonance and a control circuit for frequency modulation. The frequency modulation technique is the most effective solution to eliminate acoustic resonance among other technique. It spreads power spectrum of lamp to reduce the supplied power spectrum under the energy level of eigen-value frequency. Moreover, the proposed ballast is simple and cost effective above conventional ballast. A new PFC circuit is proposed which combines with LCD type and PCSR filter. A new PFC circuit has higher PF and lower THD than conventional LCD type and secure high reliability. Finally, to protected switching components in transient state, the surge current into ballast is limited by increase the switching frequency. Performance of the proposed ballast was validated through computer simulation using Pspice, experimentation and by applying it to an electronic ballast for a prototype 1.5kW MHL.

  • This paper presents a numerical simulation study of the transient behavior of a $2{\times}340MW$ pump-turbine power plant, where the results show an unstable behavior at runaway. First, the modeling of hydraulic components based on equivalent schemes is presented. Then, the 2 pump-turbine test case is presented. The transient behavior of the power plant is simulated for a case of emergency shutdown with servomotor failure on Unit 1. Unstable operation at runaway with a period of 15 seconds is properly simulated using a 1-dimensional approach. The simulation results points out a switch after 200 seconds of the unstable behavior between a period of oscillations initially of 15 seconds to a period of oscillation of 2.16 seconds corresponding to the hydraulic circuit first natural period. The pressure fluctuations related to both the rigid and elastic water column mode are presented for oscillation mode characterization. This phenomenon is described as a switch between a rigid and an elastic water column oscillation mode. The influence of the rotating inertia on the switch phenomenon is investigated through a parametric study.

  • Current transformer (CT) saturation may cause a variety of protective relays to malfunction. The conventional CT is designed that it can carry up to 20 times the rated current without exceeding 10% ratio error. However, the possibility of CT saturation still remains if the fault current contains substantial amounts of ac and/or dc components. This paper presents a design method of iron-cored CTs for use with protective relays to prevent CT saturation. The proposed design method determines the core cross section of the CT; it employs the transient dimensioning factor to consider relay's operating time (duty cycle) and dc component as well as ac components contained in the fault current, and symmetrical short-circuit current factor to consider as well as ac components contained in the fault current, and symmetrical short-circuit current factor to consider the biggest fault current. The method designs the cross section of CTs in cases of reclosure and no reclosure.

  • This article deals with the transient analysis in bicycle shifting using a discrete chain model. Among the various components of a bicycle, we focused in the power-transmissions on the contact points between the chain element and sprocket. And by imposing kinematic motions on the front and rear derailleurs, we analyzed the shifting mechanism for increasing the rotational speed of rear wheel. In order to build the dynamic analysis model, we first tore down the real bicycle and measured each component's design parameters. Then we made 3-dimensional CAD models for each component related to the power transmission of a bicycle. Using the converted 3-dimensional dynamic model for the simulation program, we performed non-shifting and shifting dynamic analysis. As a result, we investigated the dynamic behaviors of a discrete chain model focused on the interaction between the chain and sprocket wheel.

  • We developed a dynamic model of PEM fuel cell system which can analyze its transient response to dynamic load current. System components such as compressor, air cooler, humidifier, and stack were modeled based on their dynamic equations and performance maps by using Matlab Simulink platform. Through this simulation model, dynamic characteristics of fuel cell system including oxygen excess rat io, stack voltage, and system efficiency were shown. In addition to that, we briefly analyzed the humidity effect on cathode pressure and system efficiency, expecting that this model can be further used to optimize fuel cell system parameters just like operating pressure and temperature, humidity and oxygen excess ratio.
