The conventional three-level high frequency phase-shifted dc/dc converter has a disadvantage that a circulating current flows through transformer and switching devices during the freewheeling interval. Due to this circulating current and RMS current stress, conduction losses of transformer and switching devices increases. To alleviate these problems, we propose an improved three-level Zero Voltage and Zero Current Switching (ZVZCS) dc/dc converter using a tapped inductor, a snubber capacitor and two snubber diodes attached at the secondary side of transformer. The proposed ZVZCS converter is verified on a 10 kW, 30kHz experimental prototype.

Bi-2223 tapes have been developed for low-field power applications at liquid nitrogen temperature. When the Bi-2223 tapes are used in an application such as a power transmission cable or a power transformer, they are supplied with an AC transport current simultaneously. AC loss taking into account such real applications is a crucial issue for power applications fo the Bi-2223 tapes to be feasible. In this paper, the transport losses for different AC current levels and arrangements of the neighboring tapes have been measured in a 1./5 m long Bi-2223 tape. The significant increase of the transport losses due to neighboring tape's AC currents is observed. An increase of the transport losses caused by a decrease of the Bi-2223 tape's critical current is a minor effect. The measured trasprot losses could not be explained by a dynamic resistance loss based on DC voltage-current characteristics in combination with the neighboring tape's AC currents. The trasport losses do not depend on the frequency of the neighboring tape's AC currents but is arrangements in the range of small current especially.

In this paper, a series of electromagnetic analyses carried out for a high efficiency 22.9/0.38kV mold transformer are presented. The simulations were performed in order to calculate the losses which eventually verify the performance(efficiency) of the designed product. Here, losses include core loss, stray losses of non-current carrying metallic structural parts(core plate and clamp), ohmic loss and eddy current loss of current carrying metallic parts(busbars, leads, terminals and windings). The obtained results of the simulations were compared to the test results and showed high level of accuracy. The loss evaluation technology will allow designers avoid any potential over-design or under-design of the high efficiency products, reducing the manufacture cost and development period compared to the conventional experience-based design procedures.
In this paper, Operation characteristics of the active clamp(ACL) zero-voltage-switching(ZVS) forward converter(FC) and active clamp hard- switching(HS) forward converter are compared with respect to loss analysis. The losses of semiconductor (including conduction losses and switching losses), transformer(containing the core loss and copper loss) and parasitic element of passive element (capacitor, inductor) are measured and compared for each type. For an experiment we have built 50W ACL ZVS-FC and ACL HS-FC, in which the switching frequency is 200kHz, and test it. The experimental results show that both types of operation have nearly same characteristics.

In this study, we propose a small high voltage power supply, which uses a half-bridge ZCS resonant and Cockroft-Walton circuit as its ESP (Electrostatic Precipitator). This power supply transfers energy from the ZCS resonant inverter to the step-up transformer. The transformer secondary is then applied to the Cockroft-Walton circuit for generating high voltage as a discharging source of electrodes. It is highly efficient because its amount of switching losses are reduced by virtue of the current resonant half-bridge inverter, and also due to the small size, low parasitic capacitance in the transformer stage owing to the low number of winding turns of the step up transformer secondary combined with the Cockroft-Walton circuit. Using this power supply, experiments have been carried out as a function of the switching frequency and duty ratio in order to investigate the smoke removal characteristics. From these results, the best operational condition is obtained at the switching frequency of 9 kHz and the duty ratio of 50% in this ESP.

This paper deals with a fixed frequency full-bridge inverter type DC-DC high-power converter with high frequency high voltage(HFHV) transformer-coupled stage, which operates under quasi-resonant ZVS transition priciple in spite of a wide PWM-based voltage regulation processing and largely-changed load conditions. This multi-resonant(MR) converter topology is composed of a series capacitor-connected parallel resonant tank which makes the most of parasitic circuit reactive components of HFHV transformer and two additional quasi-resonant pole circuits incorporated into the bridge legs. The soft-switching operation and practical efficacy of this new converter circuit using the latest IGBTs are actually ascertained through 50kV trially-produced converter system operating using 20kHz/30kHz high voltage(HV) transformers which is applied for driving the diagnostic HV X-ray tube load in medical equipments. It is proved from a practical point of view that the switching losses of IGBTs and their electrical dynamic stresses relating to EMI noise can be considerably reduced under a high frequency(HF) switching-based phase-shift PWM control process for a load setting requirements.

This paper calculates the core and copper losses as heating sources of a 24MVA cast resin transformer, and analyzes the thermal distribution of the transformer to find out its hot-spot area by FEM program. Since the winding of the transformer is composed with many series and parallel circuits, the analyzing model of the winding is simplified and modelled by axi-symmetric domain. As the results, the maximum temperature is estimated by $137^{\circ}C$ in the upper part of the low-voltage winding. The maximum temperature has discrepancy of approximately $10^{\circ}C$, which is able to be considered as an acceptable error range in the design stage of power transformers. For the overall pattern of the temperature distribution is almost same as test results, the analyzing method can be a useful tool to find out a hot-spot area of the winding.

We propose a high voltage dc-dc converter for a CW (continuous wave) $CO_2$ laser system using a current resonant half-bridge inverter and a Cockcroft-Walton circuit. This high voltage power supply includes a 2-stage voltage multiplier driven by a regulated half-bridge series resonant inverter. The inverter drives a step-up transformer and the secondary transformer is applied to the voltage multiplier. It is highly efficient because of the reduced amount of switching losses by virtue of the current resonant half-bridge inverter, and also due to the small size, low parasitic capacitance in the transformer stage owing to the low number of winding turns of the step up secondary transformer combined with the Cockroft-Walton circuit. We obtained a maximum laser output power of 44 W and a maximum system efficiency of over 16%.
