The transformer is expected to be an essential component of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) for both the increase of its voltage ratings and the simultaneous quench due to different critical current between high-$T_C$ superconducting (HTSC) elements comprising the SFCL. However, in order to perform the effective current limiting operation of the SFCL, the design for the SFCL considering the hysteresis characteristics of the iron core is required. In this paper, the influence of the hysteresis characteristics of the iron core comprising the transformer type SFCL on its current limiting characteristics was investigated. Through the comparative analysis on the hysteresis curves due to the ratio of the turn number between the 1st and the 2nd windings of the transformer, the proper design condition for the ratio of the turn number to achieve the effective current limiting operation of the transformer type SFCL could be obtained.
This paper presents an analyzing method of the capacitance of the power transformer for initial voltage distribution and insulation design. When a high incoming surge voltage is accidently occurred in windings of transformer, it does not distribute equally in the windings. This phenomenon makes electric field concentration and the insulating material could be break. Initial voltage distribute mostly depends on capacitances between winding to winding or winding to core in the transformer. If the C network can be structuralized into the equivalent circuit model and be calculated each capacitance element value by circuit analysis and FEM(Finite Element Method) simulation program, the transformer designer could know the place where the structure is to be modified or the insulation to be reinforced. This method quickly provides the data of the voltage distribution in each winding to the designer.
In this paper, aiming at high-voltage applications, transformer windings schemes of multiple-output two-transistor flyback converters are investigated, which are mainly based on the stray capacitances effect. First, based on a transformer model including equivalent stray capacitors, the operational principle of the converter is presented, and the main influence of its stay capacitors is determined. Second, the windings structures of the transformer are analyzed and designed based on the stray capacitances effect. Third, the windings arrangements of the transformer are analyzed and designed through a coupling analysis of the secondary windings and a stray capacitance analysis between the primary and secondary windings. Finally, the analysis and design conclusions are verified by experimental results obtained from a 60W laboratory prototype of a multiple-output two-transistor flyback converter.
In this paper, a design technique of SMPS using plannar transformer is described. The application of plannar transformer can solve the space problem which occurs when it is installed on PCB since plannar transformer has low profile. In addition a lossless snubber circuit added to reduce the device stress and to improve the system efficiency. The designed system is verifed by simulation and experiment with comparison of efficiency between the system using conventional transformer and the system using plannar transformer.

The high operation frequency mainly reduces transformer volume in the power supply. A high frequency and high voltage pulse transformer is designed, fabricated, and tested. Switching frequency of the transformer is 100 kHz. Input and output voltages of the transformer are 250 V and 4 kV, respectively. Normal operation power of the transformer is 3 kW. Maximum volume of the transformer is 400 $cm^3$. The power density is thus 7.5 W/$cm^3$. The transformer will be installed in a metal box that has nominal operation temperature of 85 degree centigrade. The transformer and other high voltage components in the box will be molded with Silicon RTV(Room Temperature Vulcaniza) that has a very low thermal conductivity. Procedure of design and test results are discussed. Analytical as well as experimental results of varous paramters such as transformer loss, leakage inductance, distributed capacitance are also discussed. In addition, thermal analysis results from ANSYS code for three different operation conditions are discussed.
We explained the present and future tendency in the electric machinery research and development status. Being started WTO system and in the Infinite competitiveness, we hope that this paper will be helpful to strengthen competitiveness of our electric machinery industry.
HTS transformer experimentally. High temperature superconductors can only be applied against an engineering specification that has to be determined for each particular application form the design requirements for economic viability and for operation margins in service. High temperature superconducting(HTS) power apparatus are very promising candidates for application. Especially, these advantages make superconducting transformers very promising candidates for application in electrical power engineering and locomotives. In order to realize the HTS transformer, it is necessary to establish the high voltage insulation technique in cryogenic temperature. So far, insulation research of Pancake type HTS transformer is lacking nothing but insulation research of . solenoid type transformer consisted. Therefore, the composite insulation of double pancake coil type transformer are described and ac breakdown voltage characteristics of liquid nitrogen(LN$_2$) under HTS pancake coil electrode made by Bi-2223/Ag are studied. Breakdown in LN$_2$ is dominated electrode shape and distance. The relation between surface flashover voltage is considered for FRP. This research presented basis information of electrical insulation design for double pancake coil type HTS transformer.
The first attention in designing a transformer for low temperature rise should be to reduce losses. Leakage inductance and temperature rise are two of the more impotent problems facing the magnetic core technology of today's high frequency transformers. Excessive leakage inductance increases the stress on the switching transistors and limits the duty-cycle, and excessive temperature rise can lead the design limitation of high frequency transformer with high current. The flat transformer technology provides a very good solution to the problems of leakage inductance and thermal management for high frequency power. The critical magnetic components and windings are optimized and packaged within a completely assembled module. The turns ratio in a flat transformer is determined as the product of the number of elements or modules times the number of primary turns. The leakage inductance increase proportionately to the number of elements, but since it is reduced as the square of the turns, the net reduction can be very significant. The flat transformer modules use cores which have no gap. This eliminates fringing fluxes and stray flux outside of the core. The secondary windings are formed of flat metal and are bonded to the inside surface of the core. The secondary winding thus surrounds the primary winding, so nearly all of the flux is captured.
The health state of the oil transformer is evaluated by the age of use and the state of internal defects. Mineral Oil, used as an insulator for oil transformers, creates specific gases and compounds through chemical reactions caused by heat, moisture, and partial discharge inside the transformer. It is possible to determine the aging and defect of the transformer through these gases and compounds. So, it is an important indicator to evaluate the health of a transformer. In this study, factors for assessing the health of transformers were hierarchically categorized, and key factors for each hierarchy were selected for design weighting. These weights were determined through surveys conducted with experts in the fields of transformer design, operation, and quality. For the health of a transformer, defect-related factors are approximately three times more important than factors related to aging. Additionally, defect-related factors showed a higher weighting for gases generated at high temperatures. Furthermore, Furan was determined to have a high weight, directly associated with insulating paper aging. Based on these findings, a health index was proposed, and a comparative analysis was conducted by categorizing 40 operational transformers into normal and comparison groups to evaluate and validate it.
This paper proposes a transformer design of a direct cell-to-cell active cell balancing circuit with a multi-winding transformer for battery management system (BMS) applications. The coupling coefficient of the multi-winding transformer and the output capacitance of MOSFETs significantly affect the balancing current transfer efficiency of the cell balancing operation. During the operation, the multi-winding transformer stores the energy charged in a specific source cell and subsequently transfers this energy to the target cell. However, the leakage inductance of the multi-winding transformer and the output capacitance of the MOSFET induce an abnormal energy transfer to the non-target cells, thereby degrading the transfer efficiency of the balancing current in each cell balancing operation. The impacts of the balancing current transfer efficiency deterioration are analyzed and a transformer design methodology that considers the coupling coefficient is proposed to enhance the transfer efficiency of the balancing current. The efficiency improvements resulting from the selection of an appropriate coupling coefficient are verified by conducting a simulation and experiment with a 1 W prototype cell balancing circuit.
