  • In Wyner-Ziv coding, key picture is encoded by conventional H.264/AVC intra coding which has low complexity. Although inter coding is more efficient than intra coding, its complexity is much higher than intra coding due to its motion estimation. Since the main feature of Wyner-Ziv coding is low complexity of encoder, inter coding is not suitable to encode key picture in Wyner-Ziv coding. However, inter picture coding with zero motion vector can be usable for Wyner-Ziv key picture coding instead of intra coding. Moreover, while current transform-domain Wyner-Ziv residual coding only utilizes temporal correlation of WZ picture, if zero motion coding is jointly used to encode key picture in transform-domain Wyner-Ziv residual coding, there will be a significant improvement in R-D performance. Experimental results show that the complexity of Wyner-Ziv coding with the proposed zero motion key picture coding is higher than conventional Wyner-Ziv coding with intra key picture coding by about 9%, however, there are BDBR gains up to 54%. Additionally, if the proposed zero motion key coding is implemented on top of the transform-domain Wyner-Ziv residual coding, the result shows rate gains up to 70% in BDBR compared to conventional Wyner-Ziv coding with intra key picture coding.

  • In this paper, we propose a parallel LDPCA encoding method for fast transform-domain Wyner-Ziv video encoding which is suitable in an ultra fast and low power video encoding. The conventional transform-domain Wyner-Ziv video encoding performs LDPCA channel coding of quantized transform coefficients in bitplane-serial fashion, which takes about 60% of total encoding time, and this computational complexity becomes severer as the bitrate increases. The proposed method binds several bitplanes into one packed message and carries out the LDPCA encoding in parallel. The proposed LDPCA encoding method improves the encoding speed by 8 ~ 55 times. In the experiment, the proposed Wyner-Ziv encoder can encode 700 ~ 2,300 QCIF size frames per second with GOP=64. The method can be applied to the pixel-domain Wyner-Ziv encoder using LDPCA, and has a wide scope of application.

  • Since prediction processes such as motion estimation motion compensation are not at the WZ video encoder but at its decoder, WZ video compression cannot have better performance than that of conventional video encoder. In order to implement the prediction process with low complexity at the encoder, WZ residual coding was proposed. Instead of original WZ frames, WZ residual coding encodes the residual signal between key frames and WZ frames. Although the proposed WZ residual coding has good performance in pixel domain, it does not have any improvements in transform domain compared to transform domain WZ coding. The WZ residual coding in transform domain is difficult to have better performance, because pre-defined quantization matrices in WZ coding are not compatible with WZ residual coding. In this paper, we propose a new quantization method modifying quantization matrix and quantization step size adaptively for transform domain WZ residual coding. Experimental result shows 22% gain in BDBR and 1.2dB gain in BDPSNR.

  • In this paper, we propose a new bit assignment scheme for Wyner-Ziv video coding. Distributed video coding (DVC) is a new video coding paradigm which enables greatly low complexity encoding because it does not have any motion prediction module at encoder. Therefore, it is very well suited for many applications such as video communication, video surveillance, extremely low power consumption video coding, and other portable applications. Theoretically, the Wyner-Ziv video coding is proved to achieve the same rate-distortion (RD) performance comparable to that of the joint video coding. However, its RD performance has much gap compared to MC-DCT-based video coding such as H.264/AVC. Moreover, Transform Domain Wyner-Ziv (TDWZ) video coding which is a kind of DVC with transform module has difficulty of exact bit assignment because the entire image is treated as a same message. In this paper, we propose a feasible bit assignment algorithm using adaptive quantization matrix selection for the TDWZ video coding. The proposed method can calculate suitable bit amount for each region using the local characteristics of image. Simulation results show that the proposed method can enhance coding performance.

  • Recently, as the necessity of a light-weighted video encoding technique has been rising for applications such as UCC(User Created Contents) or Multiview Video, Distributed Video Coding(DVC) where a decoder, not an encoder, performs the motion estimation/compensation taking most of computational complexity has been vigorously investigated. Wyner-Ziv coding reconstructs an image by eliminating the noise on side information which is decoder-side prediction of original image using channel code. Generally the side information of Wyner-Ziv coding is generated by using frame interpolation between key frames. The channel code such as Turbo code or LDPC code which shows a performance close to the Shannon's limit is employed. The noise model of Wyner-Ziv coding for channel decoding is called Virtual Channel Noise and is generally modeled by Laplacian or Gaussian distribution. In this paper, we propose a Wyner-Ziv coding method based on the frequency-adaptive channel noise modeling in transform domain. The experimental results with various sequences prove that the proposed method makes the channel noise model more accurate compared to the conventional scheme, resulting in improvement of the rate-distortion performance by up to 0.52dB.

  • An adaptive correlation noise model (CNM) construction algorithm is proposed in this paper to increase the efficiency of parity bits for correcting errors of the side information in transform domain Wyner-Ziv (WZ) video coding. The proposed algorithm introduces two techniques to improve the accuracy of the CNM. First, it calculates the mean of direct current (DC) coefficients of the original WZ frame at the encoder and uses it to assist the decoder to calculate the CNM parameters. Second, by considering the statistical property of the transform domain correlation noise and the motion characteristic of the frame, the algorithm adaptively models the DC coefficients of the correlation noise with the Gaussian distribution for the low motion frames and the Laplacian distribution for the high motion frames, respectively. With these techniques, the proposed algorithm is able to make a more accurate approximation to the real distribution of the correlation noise at the expense of a very slight increment to the coding complexity. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the average peak signal-to-noise ratio of the decoded WZ frames by 0.5 dB to 1.5 dB.

  • As a video encoding in resource constrained environments such as sensor networks has become an important issue, DVC(Distributed Video Coding) has been intensively investigated as a solution for light weighted video encoding problem. Known as one of the representative schemes of DVC, the Wyner-Ziv coding generates side information of current frame only at decoder, using correlation among frames, and reconstructs video through noise elimination on the side information using channel code. Accordingly, the better quality of side information brings less channel noise, thus attains better coding performance of the Wyner-Ziv coder. However, since it is hard for decoder to generate an accurate side information without any information of original frame, a method to successively improve side information using successively decoded original frame, based on decoding reliability, was previously developed. However, to improve side information from decoding results, not only an error rate of the decoding result as a reliability, but also the amount of reliable information from the decoding result is important. Therefore, we propose TDWZ(Transform-domain Wyner-Ziv coding) with successively improving side information based on decoding reliability considering not only an error rate but also the amount of reliable information of the decoding results. Our experiment shows the proposed method gains average PSNR up to 1.7 dB over the previous TDWZ, that is without successive side information improvement.

  • In the Wyner-Ziv coding, compression performance highly depends on the quality of the side information since better quality of side information brings less channel noise and less parity bit. However, as decoder generates side information without any knowledge of the current Wyner-Ziv frame, it doesn't have optimal criterion to decide which block is more advantageous to generate better side information. Hence, in general, fixed block size motion estimation (ME) is performed in generating side information. By the fixed block size ME, the best coding performance cannot be attained since some blocks are better to be motion estimated in different block sizes. Therefore if there is a way to find appropriate ME block of each block, the quality of the side information might be improved. In this paper, we investigate the effects of variable block sizes of ME in generating side information.

  • The increasing demands on low-power, and low-complexity video encoder have been motivating extensive research activities on distributed video coding (DVC) in which the encoder compresses frames without utilizing inter-frame statistical correlation. In DVC encoder, contrary to the conventional video encoder, an error control code compresses the video frames by representing the frames in the form of syndrome bits. In the meantime, the DVC decoder generates side information which is modeled as a noisy version of the original video frames, and a decoder of the error-control code corrects the errors in the side information with the syndrome bits. The noisy observation, i.e., the side information can be understood as the output of a virtual channel corresponding to the orignal video frames, and the conditional probability of the virtual channel model is assumed to follow a Laplacian distribution. Thus, performance improvement of DVC systems depends on performances of the error-control code and the optimal reconstruction step in the DVC decoder. In turn, the performances of two constituent blocks are directly related to a better estimation of the parameter of the correlation channel. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to estimate the parameter of the correlation channel and also a low-complexity version of the proposed algorithm. In particular, the proposed algorithm minimizes squared-error of the Laplacian probability distribution and the empirical observations. Finally, we show that the conventional algorithm can be improved by adopting a confidential window. The proposed algorithm results in PSNR gain up to 1.8 dB and 1.1 dB on Mother and Foreman video sequences, respectively.
