One of the design methods which emulates the engineering design process, the configuration design methodology, is applied to the design process of paper feeding mechanism which handles paper in a laser beam printer. Components of a paper feeding mechanism should be designed not to incur vibration to paper and to keep paper flat when transferring. Hybrid knowledge representation is used where the design methods and experience is represented as rules, design parts are represented as objects according to the functions within the printer feeding mechanisms Reliability of design can be improved by referencing various design constraints concurrently.

In the mechanical clutches, the pressure plate is one of the important parts for transferring the power and reducing the vibration. Instead of gray and ductile irons, CGI(Compacted Graphite Cast Iron) is concerned to be the replacement recently. A thermo-mechanical coupled analysis was performed to investigate the behavior of the pressure plate for manual clutches. Thermal and mechanical properties of three kinds of cast irons were obtained from the mechanical experiments and referred other technical reports. The results of FEM analysis, were well match with the experimental ones. In this designated FEM method, temperature distribution, stress distribution and thermal deformation were successfully gained and these results will help to design the pressure plate which was made by cast irons including CGI.
This paper describes the design and analysis of a tubular linear actuator for intelligent AAP (Active Accelerate Pedal) system. In a driving emergency, the electromagnetic actuator produces an additional pedal force such as the active pedal force and vibration force to release the driver's foot on accelerator pedal. A prior study found that the linear actuator with a ferromagnetic core had a problem in transferring the additional force naturally to a driver due to the cogging force. To reduce the cogging force and obtain higher performance of the AAP system, a coreless tubular linear actuator is suggested. Electromagnetic finite element analysis is executed to analyze and design the coreless tubular actuator, and dynamic analysis is performed to characterize the dynamic performance of the AAP system with the suggested tubular actuator for two types of thrust force.
A developed hybrid method for crack identification of beams is presented. Based on the Euler-Bernouli beam theory and concepts of fracture mechanics, governing equation of the cracked beams is reformulated. Finite element (FE) method as a powerful numerical tool is used to discritize the equation in space domain. After transferring the equations from time domain to frequency domain, frequencies and mode shapes of the beam are obtained. Efficiency of the governed equation for free vibration analysis of the beams is shown by comparing the results with those available in literature and via ANSYS software. The used equation yields to move the influence of cracks from the stiffness matrix to the mass matrix. For crack identification measured data are produced by applying random error to the calculated frequencies and mode shapes. An objective function is prepared as root mean square error between measured and calculated data. To minimize the function, hybrid genetic algorithms (GAs) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is introduced. Efficiency, Robustness, applicability and usefulness of the mixed optimization numerical tool in conjunction with the finite element method for identification of cracks locations and depths are shown via solving different examples.

The piping system of a nuclear power plant plays a role of transferring high energy fluid to equipment and various devices. The safety and soundness of these piping systems are very closely related to the operability of the power plant. In the case of a welded part of a small diameter pipe, it may grow as a microcrack due to a lack of penetration, and it may grow to a size that affects the safety of the pipe due to the influence of mechanical vibration and fatigue load. Resonance refers to an increase in energy as the natural frequency of an object coincides with the frequency applied to the external force. When this resonance occurs, the frequency is the resonance frequency. In this study, when defects exist in the welds of small diameter pipe, the natural frequency of the pipe changes and resonance may occur. Since these resonances are likely to cause fatigue damage to the piping, resonance frequency changes due to the size and shape of the defects are analyzed and evaluated. As a result of the vibration test, the resonance frequency tended to decrease as the depth of the defect deepened, and the influence was larger when the defect existed at the bottom of the top of the trough. Also, it was confirmed that the Transverse cracks had an effect on the resonance frequency in the presence of the cracks in the weld bead, compared to the longitudinal cracks. As a result of this study, it is expected that the cause of the defect and the condition of the pipe can be monitored because the resonance frequency tendency according to the shape of the crack is analyzed.
Due to interfacial ageing, chemical action and interfacial damage, the interface debonding may appear in the interfaces of composite laminates. Particularly, the laminates display a side-dependent effect at small scale. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) and anisotropic thick nanoplate model is proposed to investigate the effects of imperfect interface and nonlocal parameter on the bending deformation, vibrational response and buckling stability of one-dimensional (1D) hexagonal quasicrystal (QC) layered nanoplates. By combining the linear spring model with the transferring matrix method, exact solutions of phonon and phason displacements, phonon and phason stresses of bending deformation, the natural frequencies of vibration and the critical buckling loads of 1D hexagonal QC layered nanoplates are derived with imperfect interfaces and nonlocal effects. Numerical examples are illustrated to demonstrate the effects of the imperfect interface parameter, aspect ratio, thickness, nonlocal parameter, and stacking sequence on the bending deformation, the vibrational response and the critical buckling load of 1D hexagonal QC layered nanoplate. The results indicate that both the interface debonding and nonlocal effect can reduce the stiffness and stability of layered nanoplates. Increasing thickness of QC coatings can enhance the stability of sandwich nanoplates with the perfect interfaces, while it can reduce first and then enhance the stability of sandwich nanoplates with the imperfect interfaces. The biaxial compression easily results in an instability of the QC layered nanoplates compared to uniaxial compression. QC material is suitable for surface layers in layered structures. The mechanical behavior of QC layered nanoplates can be optimized by imposing imperfect interfaces and controlling the stacking sequence artificially. The present solutions are helpful for the various numerical methods, thin nanoplate theories and the optimal design of QC nano-composites in engineering practice with interfacial debonding.
Special track systems used to divert a train to other directions or other tracks are generally called 'railway turnout'. A traditional turnout system consists of steel rails, switches, crossings, steel plates, fasteners, screw spikes, timber bearers, ballast and formation. The wheel rail contact over the crossing transfer zone has a dip-like shape and can often cause detrimental impact loads on the railway track and its components. The large impact also emits disturbing noises (either impact or ground-borne noise) to railway neighbors. In a brown-field railway track where an existing aged infrastructure requires renewal or maintenance, some physical constraints and construction complexities may dominate the choice of track forms or certain components. With the difficulty to seek for high-quality timbers with dimensional stability, a methodology to replace aged timber bearers in harsh dynamic environments is to adopt an alternative material that could mimic responses and characteristics of timber in both static and dynamic loading conditions. A critical review has suggested an application of an alternative material called fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU). The full-scale capacity design makes use of its comparable engineering characteristics to timber, high-impact attenuation, high damping property, and a longer service life. A field trial to investigate in-situ behaviours of a turnout grillage system using an alternative material, 'fibre-reinforced foamed urethane (FFU)' bearers, has been carried out at a complex turnout junction under heavy mixed traffics at Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia. The turnout junction was renewed using the FFU bearers altogether with new special track components. Influences of the FFU bearers on track geometry (recorded by track inspection vehicle 'AK Car'), track settlement (based on survey data), track dynamics, and acoustic characteristics have been measured. Operational train pass-by measurements have been analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of the replacement methodology. Comparative studies show that the use of FFU bearers generates higher rail and sleeper accelerations but the damping capacity of the FFU help suppress vibration transferring onto other track components. The survey data analysis suggests a small vertical settlement and negligible lateral movement of the turnout system. The static and dynamic behaviours of FFU bearers appear to equate that of natural timber but its service life is superior.

If the center of mass and center of stiffness or strength of a structure plan do not coincide, the structure is considered asymmetric. During an earthquake, in addition to lateral vibration, the structure experiences torsional vibration as well. Lateraltorsional coupling in asymmetric structures in the plan will increase lateral displacement at the ends of the structure plan and, as a result, uneven deformation demand in seismically resistant frames. The demand for displacement in resistant frames depends on the magnitude of transitional displacement to rotational displacement in the plan and the correlation between these two. With regard to the inability to eliminate the asymmetrical condition due to various reasons, such as architectural issues, this study has attempted to use supplemental viscous dampers to decrease the correlation between lateral and torsional acceleration or displacement in the plan. This results in an almost even demand for lateral deformation and acceleration of seismic resistant frames. On this basis, using the concept of Torsional Balance, adequate distribution of viscous dampers for the decrease of this correlation was determined by transferring the "Empirical Center of Balance" (ECB) to the geometrical center of the structure plan and thus obtaining an equal mean square value of displacement and acceleration of the plan edges. This study analyzed stiff and flexible torsional structures with one-way and two-way mass asymmetry in the Opensees software. By implementing the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, the optimum formation of dampers for controlling lateral displacement and acceleration is determined. The results indicate that with the appropriate distribution of viscous dampers, not only does the lateral displacement and acceleration of structure edges decrease but the lateral displacement or acceleration of the structure edges also become equal. It is also observed that the optimized center of viscous dampers for control of displacement and acceleration of structure depends on the amount of mass eccentricity, the ratio of uncoupled torsional-to-lateral frequency, and the amount of supplemental damping ratio. Accordingly, distributions of viscous dampers in the structure plan are presented to control the structure's torsion based on the parameters mentioned.

General condensers consist of many tubes supported by tube sheets and support plates to prevent the deflection of the condenser tubes. When a fluid at high pressure and temperature runs over the tubes for the purpose of transferring heat from one medium to another, the tubes vibrate and their surface comes into contact with the support plates. This vibration causes damage to the tubes, such as cracks and wear. We propose an ultrasonic guided wave technique to detect the above problems in the support plate region. In the proposed method, the ultrasonic guided wave mode, L(0,1), is excited using an internal transducer probe from a single position at the end of the tube. In this paper, we present a preliminary experimental verification using a super stainless tube and show that the defects can be discriminated from the support signals in the support region.

Many investments and works being continued to preserve green ocean in each countries of the world. Especial1y, the researches on the prevention of marine oil pollution being strengthened. It is not easy to disclose sludge oils that were produced necessarily in the ships operation, so that they are transferred to shore treating facility after collected inside the ship's sludge tank mostly. However, this shore transferring method is not only costly and time consuming but also entails risk of oil pollution. In this regard, it will be the best way to manage the sludge oils inside ship itself. The purpose of this study is to device an ultrasonic breaking systems which recycle the sludge oil from ships into usable oil to be burnt. In this paper, the first place, matrix structures of sludge fuel oil(SFO) and sludge lubricating oil(SLO) with the irradiation time for ultrasonic vibrator were interpreted. And, erosion damage for vibrator horn tip which is one of important part of ultrasonic breaking systems was examined under such an environment of the sludge oils. The material for horn tip is being made of SS41 steel and its erosion phase was investigated with variation of the vibration amplitude of 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 24${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ as well as the change of temperature in the oil environments. It is suggested that the experimental results can be helpful to the development of sludge oil disposing systems for the vessel.
