This paper presents a study of the tensile behavior of carbon and glass fiber reinforced epoxy hybrid laminates manufactured by vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM). The objective of this study was to develop and characterize carbon fiber reinforced plastic hybrid composite material that is low cost and light-weight and that possesses adequate strength and stiffness. The effect of position and content of the glass fabric layer on the tensile properties of the hybrid laminates was examined. The strength and stiffness of the hybrid laminates showed a steady decrease with an increase of the glass fabric content this decrease was almost linear. Fracture strain of these laminates showed a slight increasing trend when glass fabric content was increased up to 3 layers, but at a glass fabric content > 3 layers the strain was almost constant. When glass fabric layers were at both outer surfaces, the hybrid laminate exhibited a slightly higher tensile strength and elastic modulus due to the small amount of glass yarn pull-out.

An effort has been made to more accurately analyze the flow in the chip cavity, particularly to model the flow through the openings in the leadframe and correctly treat the thermal boundary condition at the leadframe. The theoretical analysis of the flow has been done by using the Hele- Shaw approximation in each cavity separated by a leadframe. The cross-flow through the openings in the leadframe has been incorporated into the Hele-Shaw formulation as a mass source term. The temperature of the leadframe has been calculated based on energy balance in the leadframe. The flow behavior in the leadframe has been verified experimentally. In the experiment, a transparent mold and clear fluid have been used for flow visualization. Comparisons were made between the calculation and experimental results which showed a good agreement.

Thermal infrared cameras have been conducted actively in various application areas, such as military, medical service, industries and cars. Because of their characteristic of sensing the radiant heat emitted from subjects in the range of long-wavelength($3{\sim}5{\mu}m$ or $8{\sim}12{\mu}m$), and of materializing a vision system, when general optics materials are used, they don't react to the light in the range of long-wavelength, and can't display their optic functions. Therefore, the materials with the feature of higher refractive index, reacting to the range of long-wavelength, are to be used. The kinds of materials with the characteristic of higher refractive index are limited, and their features are close to those of metals. Because of these metallic features, the existing producing method of optical systems were direct manufacturing method using grinding method or CAD/CAM, which put limit on productivity and made it difficult to properly cope with the increasing demand of markets. GASIR, a material, which can be molded easily, was selected among infrared ray optics materials in this study, and the optical system was designed with two Aspheric lenses. Because the lenses are molded in the environment of high temperature and high pressure, they require a special metallic pattern. The metallic pattern was produced with materials with ultra hardness that can stand high temperature and high pressure. As for the lens mold, GMP(Glass Molding Press) of the linear transfer method was used in order to improve the productivity of optical systems for thermal infrared cameras, which was the goal of this paper.

This paper summarizes the results of the fatigue test of four composite bridge decks in extreme temperatures (-30$^{\circ}C$ and 50$^{\circ}C$ ). The work was performed as part of a research program to evaluate and install multiple FRP bridge deck systems in Dayton, Ohio. A two-span continuous concrete deck was also built on three steel girders for the benchmark tests. Simulated wheel loads were applied simultaneously at two points by two servo-controlled hydraulic actuators specially designed and fabricated to perform under extreme temperatures. Each deck was initially subjected to one million wheel load cycles at low temperature and another one million cycles at high temperature. The results presented in this paper correspond to the fatigue response of each deck for four million load cycles at low temperature and another four million cycles at high temperature. Thus, the deck was subjected to a total of ten million cycles. Quasi-static load-deflection and load-strain responses were determined at predetermined fatigue cycle levels. Except for the progressive reduction in stiffness, no significant distress was observed in any of the composite deck prototypes during ten million load cycles. The effects of extreme temperatures and accumulated load cycles on the load-deflection and load-strain response of FRP composite and FRP-concrete hybrid bridge decks are discussed based on the experimental results.

Injection molds are generally fabricated by assembling a number of plates in which the core and cavity components are assembled. This assembled structure has a number of contact interfaces where the heat transfer characteristics are affected by thermal contact resistance. In previous studies, numerical approaches were investigated to predict the effect of thermal contact resistance on the temperature distribution of injection molds. In this study, thermal-fluid coupled numerical analyses are performed to take into account the thermal contact effect on the numerical evaluation of the mold filling characteristics. Comparisons with experimental results show that the proposed coupled analysis provides more reliable results than the conventional analyses in predicting the mold filling characteristics by taking into account the effect of thermal contact resistance inside the injection mold assembly.
In this study, a device and pressure press process that is able to substitute autoclave process is developed. This process complements disadvantages of autoclave process which are long process-time and high production cost. The developed device provides air pressure as well as the vacuum which are greatest feature of autoclave process. The device is sealed using hydraulic pressure to keep the air pressure inside the mold. The transfer of the heat is designed to be direct. The heating and pressure charging time are decreased by reducing the interior space. Tooling cost is reduced dramatically compared to autoclave process. Spring-back phenomenon is measured and compared. The temperatures of several parts of the mold during molding are measured. The fiber volume fraction of the parts molded by autoclave process and by the developed process are compared.

A scroll compressor used in the air conditioning in automobile consists of the fixed scroll and the orbiting scroll. Temperature gradient in the scroll compressor during the operation induces the thermal expansion of two scrolls. Therefore, the gap between scrolls in the initial stage is regarded as an important variable in structural design of the scroll compressor. The coupled thermal-stress analysis was carried out for the scrolls of a scroll compressor. The temperatures of major points of two scrolls in the steady states were referred by the literature of C. Lin. The sequentially coupled thermal-stress analysis is utilized to the heat transfer analysis and the thermal expansion analysis. In the thermal expansion analysis, the contact analysis was considered between the fixed and the orbiting scrolls in order to obtain the penetration distance and the contact pressure between two scrolls. The range of deformation was from 44 to $76{\mu}m$ according to the height of the scroll. The maximum penetration distance of $60{\mu}m$ occurred at the top surface of the fixed scroll in the center of the scroll parts.

Demand of glass fiber reinforced composites (GFRC) increased with developing aircraft and defense industries using resin transfer molding (RTM) process to produce complex product. In this research, wetting, interfacial, and mechanical properties were evaluated with different Cross-linking Density by Molecular Weight of Hardener. Epoxy resin as matrices was used bisphenol-A type and amine-type hardeners with different molecular weight. Specimens were manufactured via RTM and wetting property of resin and glass fiber (GF) mat was evaluated to viscosity of epoxy and injection time of epoxy matrix. Mechanical property of GFRC was determined via flexural strength whereas interfacial properties were determined by interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and interfacial shear strength (IFSS). The difference in mechanical property depends upon the fiber weight fraction (wt %) of GFRC by RTM as well as the different Molecular Weight of Hardener.
Numerical simulation for Resin Transfer Molding manufacturing process is attempted by using the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) combined with the level set method. XFEM allows to obtaining a good numerical precision of the pressure near the resin flow front, where its gradient is discontinuous. The enriched shape functions of XFEM are derived by using the level set values so as to correctly describe the interpolation with the resin flow front. In addition, the level set method is used to transport the resin flow front at each time step during the mold filling. The level set values are calculated by an implicit characteristic Galerkin FEM. The multi-frontal solver of IPSAP is adopted to solve the system. This work is validated by comparing the obtained results with analytic solutions. Moreover, a localization method of XFEM and level set method is proposed to increase the computing efficiency. The computation domain is reduced to the small region near the resin flow front. Therefore, the total computing time is strongly reduced by it. The efficiency test is made with a simple channel flow model. Several application examples are analyzed to demonstrate ability of this method.

A composite structure was fabricated with embedded impact detection capabilities for applications in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). By embedding sensor functionality in the composite, the structure can successfully perform impact localization in real time. Smart resin, composed of $Pb(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-Pb(Zr,\;Ti)O_2$ (PNN-PZT) powder and epoxy resin with 1:30 wt%, was used instead of conventional epoxy resin in order to activate the sensor function in the composite structure. The embedded impact sensor in the composite was fabricated using Hand Lay-up and Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding(VARTM) methods to inject the smart resin into the glass-fiber fabric. The electrodes were fabricated using silver paste on both the upper and bottom sides of the specimen, then poling treatment was conducted to activate the sensor function using a high voltage amplifier at 4 kV/mm for 30 min at room temperature. The composite's piezoelectric sensitivity was measured to be 35.13 mV/N by comparing the impact force signals from an impact hammer with the corresponding output voltage from the sensor. Because impact sensor functionality was successfully embedded in the composite structure, various applications of this technique in the SHM industry are anticipated. In particular, impact localization on large-scale composite structures with complex geometries is feasible using this composite embedded impact sensor.
