This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of PAC(Powder Activated Carbon) retention time on stable operation of high concentration powered activated carbon(HCPAC-MBR) in the treatment of secondary domestic wastewater. The pilot scale HCPAC-MBR system was operated at two different SRTs, 25 days and 100 days. The main drawback of HCPAC-MBR system was the rapid increase of trans-membrane pressure. The increase rate of trans-membrane pressure was proportional to SRT value at constant flux. This result seemed to be caused by reduced amount of EPS adsorbed on the PAC in the reactor by decreasing the SRT of the PAC. The particle size of the PAC was also influenced by SRT. The PAC size was decreased as SRT was increased. The change of particle size could be one reason for the change of trans-membrane pressure. The pore volume in the cake-layer formed on the membrane surface became to be increased by reducing SRT, because the cake-layer was highly composed of the PAC. Therefore, increased pore volume might play a role to reduce the trans-membrane pressure. The removal rate of E260 and TOC was also inversely proportional to SRT value.

Temperature correction trans-membrane pressure (TC-TMP) is frequently used as a fouling index in membrane water treatment plants. TC-TMP equation is derived based on an assumption that the total membrane resistance (i.e. the sum of the intrinsic membrane resistance and fouling resistance) is not affected by temperature. This work verified the validity of this assumption using microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with and without fouling. The foulants used in the work were kaolin (inorganic) and humic acid (organic). The intrinsic resistances of MF and UF membranes remains at constant values regardless of temperature change. When the same amount of foulants were accumulated on the membrane, inorganic fouling resistance with kaolin was constant regardless of temperature change while organic fouling resistance with humic acid decreased at higher temperatures, which means that TC-TMP cannot be used as a fouling index when organic fouling occurs in a real field application. Since TC-TMP underestimates the amount of fouling at higher temperatures, more attention should be necessary in the operation of membrane water treatment plant in a hotter season like summer.
In this study the basic data were settled down to establish theory of membrane module and apparatus for measuring suspended solid per particle size. The theory and technique were different with the conventional weight method and light scattering method. For this purpose silica, dextran, kaolin, and PEG (polyethylene glycol) suspended solutions were filtrated through glass fiber membranes GF/C and GF/A on membrane module for measuring TMP (Trans-membrane pressure) changes using digital pressure gages. And the related equation between modified solution concentration and TMP change slope was derived from the TMP change experiments, and then suspended solid concentration of samples could be expected by the equation.

The performance of a domestic ceramic membrane with pore size of $0.1{\mu}m$ was evaluated to produce drinking water. A pilot-scale ceramic membrane filtration plant with a capacity of $1m^3/d$ was operated at the filtration flux of $3.0m^3/m^2{\cdot}d$ to investigate the effect of both backwash interval and pre-ozonation on TMP (trans-membrane pressure) increasing rate. The TMP increased with increasing the backwash interval. However, the application of pre-ozonation reduced the TMP increasing rate remarkably. When 1 mg/L of ozone was dosed with contact time of 5 min, TMP increasing rate at the backwash interval of 1 hr was reduced by 30%. This result indicated that pre-ozonation was very effective in reducing membrane fouling. There was almost no change in TMP increasing rate when the ozone contact time was maintained in the range of 5 to 15 min. Increasing ozone concentration up to 3 mg/L showed beneficial effect on TMP increasing rate.
A theoretical and experimental study made in order to determine the performance of mem-brane contactors in water carbonation is presented. In particular on the basis of experimental results pre-viously obtained it has been derived an expression in which the effect of some parameters as temprera-ture water and CO₂ flow rate CO₂ pressure trans-membrane pressure on the performance of the process is taken into account. The study refers to hollow fiber membrane contactors used for the experimental tests. The main scope has been to verify if by membrane contactors it is possible to reach the same de-gree of water carbonation as by trditional methods (1-5 g/1) and to derive for the module used a cor-relation able to describe the performance of the process at several operating conditions. The high CO₂ removal observed confirms the interesting potentialties of membrane contactors also in gas streams purification.

In the study, excess of lime-soda ash(L-S) was added to groundwater for chemical precipitation of hardness ions. After formation of the coagulated flocs, sedimentation step was replaced with crossflow ultrafiltration(UF) process using tubular ceramic membrane. As results, our treated water was below total hardness(TH) 10 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ from groundwater using washing water in a soymilk factory. Then, we investigated the change of permeat flux(J) and dimensionless permeate flux($J/J_0$) during experiments for variations of TMP(Trans-membrane pressure) or flow rate, to see effect of TMP or flow rate on membrane fouling by the coagulated Inorganic flocs. In the result, membrane fouling and rejection rate of total hardness were not affected by TMP and flow rate variations in the range of our experiments.
In this study, carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) was used as an inhibitor of scale production on the surface of RO membrane. In order to compare the effects of $CO_2$ injection on scale production, four RO modules: 1) without $CO_2$ injection and anti-scalant (RO module #1), 2) with only $CO_2$ injection (RO module #2), 3) with only anti-scalant (RO module #3), 4) with both $CO_2$ injection and anti-scalant (RO module #4), were operated for 60 days under constant flux mode. The trans-membrane pressure (TMP) was observed to decrease significantly in RO modules with $CO_2$ injection as compared with the other RO modules. When the feed water pH was controlled at 5.0 by injecting $CO_2$, the maximum TMP in RO modules #2 and #4 was founded to decrease by 42 and 40%, respectively. Moreover, the $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in the concentrate was 20mg/L lower in RO modules without $CO_2$ injection which is attributed to the scale formation on the surface of the RO membranes. The SEM-EDS analysis further showed a serious fouled RO membrane surface in RO modules #1 and #3.
This work addresses the development of microfiltration ceramic membrane from alumina using extrusion method. The membranes were sintered at different temperatures ranging between 1000 and 1300℃. The alumina was characterized with thermogravimetric analysis, particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscope analysis. Subsequently, the effect of sintering temperature on the membrane properties such as porosity, flexural strength, and pure water permeability was investigated and optimized for the sintering temperature. It is observed that with increasing sintering temperature, the porosity of the membranes decreases and the flexural strength, and pure water permeability of the membranes increase. The uncoated and coated membranes were compared at constant flux mode of filtration. Under the turbidity solution recirculation alone at 100 NTU, trans-membrane pressure (TMP) of uncoated membrane remained constant when the filtration flux was below 121 Lm-2 h -1 , while the coated membrane was 111 Lm-2 h -1 . Although suction pressure increased more rapidly at higher turbidity, coated membrane filtration showed better removal efficiency of the turbidity.

Fouling characteristics of humic substances on tight ultrafiltration (UF) membrane have been investigated. The tight UF membrane was prepared by blending polysulfone (PSf) in N.N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) with 25%wt of Polyethylene glycol (PEG400) and 4%wt of acetone. Fouling characteristic of the modified PSf membrane was observed during peat water filtration in different trans-membrane pressure (TMP). It was found that the acetone modified membrane provided 13% increase in TMP during five hours of peat water filtration, where a stable flux was reached within 150 minutes. Meanwhile, the increase of TMP from 10 psig to 30 psig resulted in a fouling resistance enhancement of 60%. Furthermore, based on the fouling analysis, fouling mechanism at the first phase of filtration was attributed to intermediate blocking while the second phase was cake formation.
