  • Development of light-weight high speed train (HST) based on distributed motor control with the top speed of 350 km/hr has engendered a need for abatement of the interior noise of the train cabin. The development of noise abatement measures is crucial at the design stage of the train car since the noise transmission characteristics of the car structure directly influences the cabin interior noise. Since the transmission loss measurement using the entire car structure is often not feasible, especially at the initial stages of the train development, investigation of transmission characteristics using small-scale reverberation chamber can furnish useful alternative source of predicting the noise level. In the present study, white noise is generated at source and transmission loss estimated by performing measurement of a specimen in a scaled reverberation chamber. Comparison of measured values with the previously derived numerical values show good agreement in the overall trend but appreciable quantitative differences still remain.

  • The source of wayside noise for the train are the aerodynamic noise, wheel/rail noise, and power unit noise. The major source of railway noise is the wheel/rail noise caused by the interaction between the wheels and rails. The Structure borne noise is mainly a low frequency problem. The train noise and vibration nearby the elevated railway make one specific issue. The microphone array method is used to search sound radiation characteristics of elevated structure to predict the noise propagation from an elevated railway. In this paper, the train noise and structure borne noise by train are measured. From the results, we investigated the effect on the sound absorption tunnel for elevated railway.

  • A noise reduction of noise barrier for high speed train was measured by using scale down model test. A selected types of noise barriers were simple vertical barrier, interference type barrier with plate, interference type barrier with cylindrical pipes. On experiment, in order to make similar present test lane condition, reduced train model and multiple noise sources were considered. As a result. interference type noise barrier with cylindrical pipes is most effective than other barriers. A present height of noise barrier which is established in a test lane is not high enough for reducing patograph noise.

  • A turnout which permits trains to pass from one track to another has a disconnecting rail component, namely a crossing, so that noise and vibration arc occurred abruptly when train is passing through it. In Korea, it is planned to adopt the high speed tilting train, which operates at the speed of 180 km/h, at the conventional line. However, for application of the tilting train, it is prerequisite to establish the stable turnout system allowing the tilting train to pass through it without reducing speed. This study was performed to evaluate noise and vibration emitted from the prototype turnout which is developed for speed-up of the conventional line. For the purpose, noise and vibration were measured at near the conventional turnout and the improved one, which is constructed at Waegwan station and Kumi station of Gyeongbu line, respectively.

  • In the previous studies on railway noise analysis, the main purpose of noise analysis is concerned with the reduction of A-weighted sound pressure level in order to satisfy noise regulations. However, more important facts on noise reduction are the subjective feelings of the human being on noise because people might be annoyed from the noise caused by train. In this paper, railway noise from different type of train are compared using the calculation of sound quality metrics with using strength related method that is calculation of A-weighted sound pressure level.

  • In this paper, study of high speed train pantograph arm shape and panhead cross-section for aerodynamic drag and noise reduction is performed. In previous research, it is known that knee of pantograph arm and panhead of pantogpraph are main sources of noise from high speed train pantograph. By numerical simulation using full scale pantograph model, pantograph arm and panhead optimization are performed. As a result, drag and noise are reduced at both studies about high speed pantograph.

  • Today, high-speed trains enjoy wide acceptance as fast, convenient and environment-friendly means of transportation. However, increase in the speed of the train entails a concomitant increase in the aerodynamic noise, adversely affecting the passenger comfort. At the train speed exceeding 300 km/h, the effects of turbulent flows and vortex sheddding are greatly amplified, contributing to a significant increase in the aerodynamic noise. Drawing a biomimetic analogy from low-noise flight of owl, a method to reduce aerodynamic noise at inter-coach space of high-speed trains is investigated. The proposed method attempts to achieve the noise reduction by modifying the turbulent flow and vortex shedding characteristics at the inter-coach space. To determine the aerodynamic noise at various train speeds, wind tunnel testing and numerical CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation for the basic inter-coach spacing model are carried out, and their results compared. The simulation and experimental results reveal that there are discrete frequency components associated with turbulent air flow at constant intervals in the frequency domain

  • Brake noise has been one of the most difficult concerns in the automotive industry. Although substantial research has been conducted to predict and eliminate brake noise, there is yet no method to completely suppress brake noise. Furthermore, little effort has been made to improve noise and vibration characteristics of the railway brake system. The amount of sound energy radiated from the railway brake system is much larger than that from the automobile, and it causes discomfort of passengers in the station. In this paper, noise and vibration caused by the braking force of the KTX vehicle have been measured and analysed. Results show that noise level increases abruptly right before a train comes to a complete stop. Furthermore, typical characteristics of the disk brake squeal have been observed.

  • The speed of train has rapidly been increased in accordance with the developed railway technology. Nowadays, high-speed trains were introduced which has the speed faster than 400 km/h. In Korea, a lots of efforts were undertaken to increase the speed of train faster than 350 km/h, however noise and vibration are still the main problems to solve for realization of the high-speed train. In the case of operation speed faster than 350 km/h, it can be easily presumed that the noise and vibration damages could be increased in the train stations which are close to the passing railway tracks. Thus, the noise in the five different types of high-speed train stations were analyzed including stations built on the ground, underground, under rail, and two types on rail. The present paper predicts noises inside the stations depending on the speed of the passing trains and analyze the noise comparing with noise criteria (NC). Sound insulation performance of each part of buildings was calculated using the transmission noise formula and computer modeling, Finally, a series of processes were introduced to satisfy the aural environment with the optimum interior noise criteria by changing interior finishing materials.
