  • It has been subject to question whether a conventional traffic signal controller can support efficient operation at grade intersections in which vehicles and tram lines cross concurrently. This study proposes a list of functional requirements for a traffic signal controller to support effective operation of trams at such an intersection. The considered details includes the combinations of geometric conditions at which vehicle, bus, and tram lines are aligned, the types of exclusive tram signals, and the combinations of various signal phases, including exclusive tram phases, which are currently undefined in the nation. The results suggest that the controller should be capable of dealing with the NEMA standard overlap relays and a quadruple-ring phase representation scheme.

  • In this paper, we developed a traffic signal control system for emergency situations that can minimize loss of property and life by actively controlling traffic signals in a certain section in response to emergency situations. When the emergency vehicle terminal transmits an emergency signal including identification information and GPS information, the surrounding image is obtained from the camera, and the object is analyzed based on deep learning to output object information having information such as the location, type, and size of the object. After generating information tracking this object and detecting the signal system, the signal system is switched to emergency mode to identify and track the emergency vehicle based on the received GPS information, and to transmit emergency control signals based on the emergency vehicle's traveling route. It is a system that can be transmitted to a signal controller. This system prevents the emergency vehicle from being blocked by an emergency control signal that is applied first according to an emergency signal, thereby minimizing loss of life and property due to traffic obstacles.

  • The validity of simulation has been well-established for decades in areas such as computer and communication system. Recently, the technique has become entrenched in specific areas such as transportation and traffic forecasting. Several methods have been proposed for investigating complex traffic flows. However, the dynamics of vehicles and their driver's characteristics, even though it is known that they are important factors for any traffic flow analysis, have never been considered sufficiently. In this paper, the traffic simulation using a multi-agent approach with considering vehicle dynamics is proposed. The multi-agent system is constructed with the traffic environment and the agents of vehicle and driver. The traffic environment consists of multi-lane roads, nodes, virtual lanes, and signals. To ensure the fast calculation, the agents are performed on the based of the rules to regulate their behaviors. The communication frameworks are proposed for the agents to share the information of vehicles' velocity and position. The model of a driver agent which controls a vehicle agent is described in the companion paper. The vehicle model contains the nonlinear subcomponents of engine, torque converter, automatic transmission, and wheels. The simulation has proceeded for an interrupted and uninterrupted flow model. The result has shown that the driver agent performs human-like behavior ranging from slow and careful to fast and aggressive driving behavior, and that the change of the traffic state is closely related with the distance and the signal delay between intersections. The system developed shows the effectiveness and the practical usefulness of the traffic simulation.

  • Traffic light rules are one among the most common and important safety rules as the directly correlate with the safety of pedestrians. Consequently, an algorithm is required to cause an automated (or semi-automated) vehicle to observe traffic light signals. We present a novel, artificial potential function to guide an automated vehicle through traffic lights. Our function consists of three potential function components representing the three traffic light colors: green, yellow, and red. The traffic light potential function smoothly changes an artificial potential field using the elapsed time for the current light and light conversion. Our traffic light potential function is combined with other potential functions to guide vehicles' movement and constructs the final artificial potential field. Using various simulations, we found or method successfully guided the vehicle to observe traffic lights while behaving like human-controlled cars.

  • Driver distraction is a major cause of traffic accidents in Korea. Various measures are being introduced to detect and warn driver distraction. The objective of this research is to investigate changes in driver's physiological signals due to distraction during driving. Driving simulator experiments have been carried out to investigate discrepancy in EEG signals among normal driving, DMB watching during driving, and cellular phone use during driving. Based on the discrepancy, combination of EEG signals have been identfied as candidate variables for detecting driver distraction. Statistical analysis has been carried out to verify their statistical significance.

  • The recent transition to Performance Based Navigation in aviation enhances the accuracy of aircraft position, safety and efficiency in air traffic operations by using satellite-based navigation system such as GNSS. However, intentional interferences with GNSS signal as well as ones coming from natural phenomena such as solar storm increase. GNSS have very low power and therefore their signals are more susceptible to interferences than ground-based navigation signals. This paper introduces requirements of alternative positioning, navigation and timing(APNT) system and relevant technologies when the GNSS signals are not valid.

  • The control delays at signal intersections have proved the source of numerous vehicular and environmental complications. Control delays both directly and indirectly hinder time- and cost-effective driving by extending the duration of time spent on the road and exhausting excessive amounts of fuel. They furthermore cause traffic congestion, thereby raising overall emission levels. It is therefore imperative to reduce control delays in order to achieve time and fuel economy and reduce vehicle-related pollution. The following study accordingly uses genetic algorithms to optimize traffic signals in congested environments.

  • Wind-induced vibrations of mast arms of cantilever traffic signal structures can lead to fatigue failure. Two such structures were instrumented each with a sonic anemometer and a camera that records the motions of the tip of the arm. It was observed throughout this experiment that large amplitude vertical vibrations of mast arms with signals with backplates occur for the most part at low wind speed ranges, between 2 to 7 m/s, and as the wind speed increases the amplitude of the vertical vibrations decreases. The results of these experiments contradict the generally accepted belief that vortex shedding does not cause significant vibrations of mast arms that could lead to fatigue failure, which have been attributed to galloping in the past. Two damping devices were tested with mixed results.

  • The IEEE 802.11e EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Channel Access) mechanism has been proposed to improve the QoS (Quality of Service) of various services in WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks). By differentiating the channel access delay depending on ACs (Access Categories), this mechanism can provide the relative service differentiation among ACs. In this paper, we consider that WLAN is deployed in medical environments to transfer medical traffic and we reveal that the quality of the medical traffic (in particular, ECG signals) is significantly deteriorated even with the service differentiation by IEEE 802.11e EDCA. Also, we analyze the reason for performance degradation and show that IEEE 802.11e EDCA has difficulty in protecting the transmission opportunity of high-priority traffic against low-priority traffic. In order to assure medical-grade QoS, we firstly define the service priority of medical traffic based on their characteristics and requirements, and then we propose the enhanced channel access scheme, referred to as DIFF-CW. The proposed scheme differentiates CW (Contention Window) depending on the service priority and modifies the channel access procedure for low-priority traffic. The simulation results confirm that the DIFF-CW scheme not only assures the QoS of medical traffic but also improves the overall channel utilization.

  • Recently, solutions to accommodate explosively growing mobile data traffic have attracted intensive attentions since the emergence of high-performance smartphones. Spectrum which can be exploited for mobile communications is very limited. Thus, femto cell is considered as an alternative because it can efficiently offload mobile data traffic from macro cells without using additional spectrum. In this paper, we mathematically analyzed the coverage of femto cell when it is deployed in an area where there exists signals from existing macro base stations. Our numerical results indicate that the coverage of femto cell increases as the total power of femto cell increases or the ratio of power allocated to pilot channel increases. However, it is also shown that the coverage of femto cell is very limited despite its high power when interference signals from macro base stations are strong.
