A Study on Traffic Prediction Using Hybrid Approach of Machine Learning and Simulation Techniques (기계학습과 시뮬레이션 기법을 융합한 교통 상태 예측 방법 개발 연구)

  • With the advent of big data, traffic prediction has been developed based on historical data analysis methods, but this method deteriorates prediction performance when a traffic incident that has not been observed occurs. This study proposes a method that can compensate for the reduction in traffic prediction accuracy in traffic incidents situations by hybrid approach of machine learning and traffic simulation. The blind spots of the data-driven method are revealed when data patterns that have not been observed in the past are recognized. In this study, we tried to solve the problem by reinforcing historical data using traffic simulation. The proposed method performs machine learning-based traffic prediction and periodically compares the prediction result with real time traffic data to determine whether an incident occurs. When an incident is recognized, prediction is performed using the synthetic traffic data generated through simulation. The method proposed in this study was tested on an actual road section, and as a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the error in predicting traffic state in incident situations was significantly reduced. The proposed traffic prediction method is expected to become a cornerstone for the advancement of traffic prediction.

Service Identification Method for Encrypted Traffic Based on SSL/TLS (SSL/TLS 기반 암호화 트래픽의 서비스 식별 방법)

  • The SSL/TLS, one of the most popular encryption protocol, was developed as a solution of various network security problem while the network traffic has become complex and diverse. But the SSL/TLS traffic has been identified as its protocol name, not its used services, which is required for the effective network traffic management. This paper proposes a new method to generate service signatures automatically from SSL/TLS payload data and to classify network traffic in accordance with their application services. We utilize the certificate publication information field in the certificate exchanging record of SSL/TLS traffic for the service signatures, which occurs when SSL/TLS performs Handshaking before encrypt transmission. We proved the performance and feasibility of the proposed method by experimental result that classify about 95% SSL/TLS traffic with 95% accuracy for every SSL/TLS services.

A Study on the Change of Road Traffic Noise at the Roadside Apartments according to the Traffic Management (교통운영에 따른 도로변 공동주택의 도로교통소음 변화에 관한 연구)

  • In Korea, large.scale housing complexes and residential areas began to appear in urban regions through urban plan projects from the 1970s. In addition, with the increase in the percentage of apartments in developed areas, road traffic noise at roadside apartments was raised as a new problem. Furthermore, since the late 1980s, apartments, which had been no taller than 15 stories, have grown higher to 20-30 stories and recently 40.story or higher apartments are being constructed, and as a result, residences are growing denser and road traffic noise is increasing in urban areas. Thus, the present study made a noise map using variables 'traffic volume' and 'mean spot speed' among factors influencing roadside apartments, and examined the noise reduction efficiency of the variables. According to the results, traffic volume and speed limit were found to have an effect on a limited space, and the median bus lane system was found to have a slight effect on the roadside.

  • A network model and a Genetic Algorithm(GA) is proposed to solve the simultaneous estimation of the trip distribution and traffic assignment from traffic counts in the congested networks in a logit-based Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE). The model is formulated as a problem of minimizing the non-linear objective functions with the linear constraints. In the model, the flow-conservation constraints of the network are utilized to restrict the solution space and to force the link flows meet the traffic counts. The objective of the model is to minimize the discrepancies between the link flows satisfying the constraints of flow-conservation, trip production from origin, trip attraction to destination and traffic counts at observed links and the link flows estimated through the traffic assignment using the path flow estimator in the legit-based SUE. In the proposed GA, a chromosome is defined as a vector representing a set of Origin-Destination Matrix (ODM), link flows and travel-cost coefficient. Each chromosome is evaluated from the corresponding discrepancy, and the population of the chromosome is evolved by the concurrent simplex crossover and random mutation. To maintain the feasibility of solutions, a bounded vector shipment is applied during the crossover and mutation.

A Comparison Study of the Signal Systems in the Korean Road Traffic Law and the Convention on Road Signs and Signals (비엔나협약규정 신호체계와 우리나라 신호체계에 관한 비교연구)

  • In 1968, United Nation prepared conventions to promote the safety and vitalization of traffic to accomodate increased international business and personal activities. They are convention on rad traffic and convention on road signs and signals. These conventions define the shape, color and the operational guidelines of signs, marking and traffic signals. However, the Korean road traffic law enforces independently the manufactural and operational guidelines of those devices and marking. Due to different regulations described in those two, potential problem might be expected in terms of international traffic in the near future in Korea. This paper presents the academical comparison between these two different road traffic regulations established by the Korean legislature and United Nation. It suggests a list of researches recommended for the nation to be ready to integrate international traffic.

  • We propose a cell-multiplexing scheme for the real-time communication service in ATM network and a new service discipline guarantee end-to-end delay based on pseudo-isochronous cell switching. The proposed scheme consists of two level frame hierarchy, upper and lower frame, which is used to assign the bandwidth and to guarantee the requested delay bound, respectively. Since the proposed algorithm employs two level frame hierarchy, it can overcome the coupling problem which is inherent to the framing strategy. The proposed scheme consists of two components, traffic controller and scheduller, as the imput traffic description model and regulates the input traffic specification. The function of the traffic controller is to shape real-time traffic to have the same input pattern at every switch along the path. The end-to-end delay is bounded by the scheduller which can limit the delay variation without using per-session jitter controllers, and therefore it can decrease the required buffer size. The proposed algorithm can support the QoS's of non-real time traffic as well as those of real time traffic

  • VDF(volume-delay function) is one of the most important factor to improve the reliability of traffic demand estimation because it is for estimation of link travel time based on the traffic volume variation. Because VDF of link except for freeway is applied as the parameter of BPR(bureau of public road) of U.S., it causes to deteriorate the accuracy of traffic demand estimation. The purpose of this paper is to establish new parameter of VDF based on the real-surveyed traffic data in order to improve the problem of the existing VDF. We suggest the reclassification of road hierarchy, the approach of traffic survey, the estimating method of VDF parameter, and the improvements of new VDF application. The new VDF allows us to estimate more realistic traffic situation in parts of demand, travel time and path between origin-destination.

  • This study started from the problem recognition of climbing lane installed in Korea roads. Because design standards of climbing lane installed don't match traffic pattern of korean drivers, coefficient of utilization of climbing lane is low and merging section between climbing lane and main lane has traffic accident possibilities. For this, brand-new design standards developed from the present lane design criterion, taper lenghs, and traffic signs, then field adoption test was carried out to prove the effectiveness. As a result, coefficient of utilization of climbing lane and average traffic velocity in climbing section are improved and the economic analysis also shows that brand-new standards has high feasibility for low cost. In case of broad application to not only expressway but national and local road based on the study, it could be a significant contribution to traffic flow improvement.

  • In previous research, we analyzed traffic accident characteristics in the Chungcheong region through factor analysis, cluster analysis, and a questionnaire using traffic accident analysis system data to enhance Korea's traffic safety. Based on the analysis results, we investigated the design and application of traffic safety technology in non-urban areas in this study. Three technologies are proposed to improve traffic safety facilities for the region: a recognition light at pedestrian crossing works, a recognition light on the road for the underprivileged in traffic works, and a safety LED sign for operation of agricultural machine works. Each technology complements the light pollution problem about snow removal and road safety when applied to existing facilities in the non-urban areas. Solar-based indigenous technology is expected to contribute to road safety in rural areas.

Improvement of High-Availability Seamless Redundancy (HSR) Traffic Performance for Smart Grid Communications

  • High-availability seamless redundancy (HSR) is a redundancy protocol for Ethernet networks that provides two frame copies for each frame sent. Each copy will pass through separate physical paths, pursuing zero fault recovery time. This means that even in the case of a node or a link failure, there is no stoppage of network operations whatsoever. HSR is a potential candidate for the communications of a smart grid, but its main drawback is the unnecessary traffic created due to the duplicated copies of each sent frame, which are generated and circulated inside the network. This downside will degrade network performance and might cause network congestion or even stoppage. In this paper, we present two approaches to solve the above-mentioned problem. The first approach is called quick removing (QR), and is suited to ring or connected ring topologies. The idea is to remove the duplicated frame copies from the network when all the nodes have received one copy of the sent frame and begin to receive the second copy. Therefore, the forwarding of those frame copies until they reach the source node, as occurs in standard HSR, is not needed in QR. Our example shows a traffic reduction of 37.5%compared to the standard HSR protocol. The second approach is called the virtual ring (VRing), which divides any closed-loop HSR network into several VRings. Each VRing will circulate the traffic of a corresponding group of nodes within it. Therefore, the traffic in that group will not affect any of the other network links or nodes, which results in an enhancement of traffic performance. For our sample network, the VRing approach shows a network traffic reduction in the range of 67.7 to 48.4%in a healthy network case and 89.7 to 44.8%in a faulty network case, compared to standard HSR.
