  • Traffic congestion cost is increasing annually. Specifically congestion caused by the CDB traffic contains more than a half of the total congestion cost. Recent advancement in the field of Big Data, AI paved the way to industry revolution 4.0. And, these new technologies creates tremendous changes in the traffic information dissemination. Eventually, accurate and timely traffic information will give a positive impact on decreasing traffic congestion cost. This study, therefore, focused on developing both recurrent and non-recurrent congestion prediction models on urban roads by adopting Recurrent Neural Network(RNN), a tribe in machine learning. Two hidden layers with scaled conjugate gradient backpropagation algorithm were selected, and tested. Result of the analysis driven the authors to 25 meaningful links out of 33 total links that have appropriate mean square errors. Authors concluded that RNN model is a feasible model to predict congestion.

  • This paper presents an image processing technique to get traffic information such as vehicle volume, velocity, and occupancy for measuring the traffic congestion rate. To obtain these information, two horizontal lines are previously set on the screen. A moving vehicle is detected using the gray level difference on each line, and also template matching method at night. Threshold values are determined by sampling pavement grey level, and updated dynamically to cope with the change of ambient light conditions. These technique is successfully used to calculate vehicle volume, occupancy, and velocity. This study can be applied to traffic signal control system for minimizing traffic congestion in urban areas.

  • Wireless sensor network is based on an event driven system. Sensor nodes collect the events in surrounding environment and the sensing data are relayed into a sink node. In particular, when events are detected, the data sensing periods are likely to be shorter to get the more correct information. However, this operation causes the traffic congestion on the sensor nodes located in a routing path. Since the traffic congestion generates the data queue overflows in sensor nodes, the important information about events could be missed. In addition, since the battery energy of sensor nodes exhausts quickly for treating the traffic congestion, the entire lifetime of wireless sensor networks would be abbreviated. In this paper, a new congestion control method is proposed on the basis of genetic algorithm. To apply genetic algorithm, the data traffic rate of each sensor node is utilized as a chromosome structure. The fitness function of genetic algorithm is designed from both the average and the standard deviation of the traffic rates of sensor nodes. Based on dominant gene sets, the proposed method selects the optimal data forwarding sensor nodes for relieving the traffic congestion. In experiments, when compared with other methods to handle the traffic congestion, the proposed method shows the efficient data transmissions due to much less queue overflows and supports the fair data transmission between all sensor nodes as possible. This result not only enhances the reliability of data transmission but also distributes the energy consumptions across the network. It contributes directly to the extension of total lifetime of wireless sensor networks.

  • There have been few studies on the impacts of independent recurrent and non-recurrent congestion on freeway networks. The main reason is due partly to the lack of traffic data collected during those periods of recurrent and non-recurrent congestion and partly to the difficulty of using the simulation tools effectively. This study has suggested a methodology to analyze the independent impacts of the recurrent and non-recurrent congestion on target freeway segments. The proposed methodology is based on an elaborately calibrated simulation analysis, using real traffic data obtained during the recurrent and non-recurrent congestion periods. This paper has also summarized the evaluation results from the field tests of two ITS technologies, which were developed to provide drivers with real-time traffic information under traffic congestion. As a result, their accuracy may not be guaranteed during the transition periods such as the non-recurrent congestion. In summary, this study has been focused on the importance of non-recurrent congestion compared to recurrent congestion, and the proposed methodology is expected to provide a basic foundation for prioritizing limited government investments for improving freeway network performance degraded by recurrent or non-recurrent congestion.

  • In Pusan Harbour, new port development projects are implemented such as the Extended Terminal adjacent to the Gamman Terminal, Pusan New Port, the Navy $\bigcirc$$\bigcirc$ piers, etc. which will require new marine traffic environments in the Passage I of Pusan Harbour. Specially, the turning basin of the Extended Terminal adjacent to the Gamman Terminal has been designed to overlay the Passage I of Pusan Harbour, which will interrupt the inbound traffic flow and the results will be worried to decrease the efficiency of port operation. Therefore, this paper will be aimed to evaluate the traffic congestion in the Pusan Passage I due to the opening of new ports within Pusan Harbour in 2006 and 2011 by using computer simulation based the queueing theory.

  • As metropolitan areas are rapidly growing in both a lot of population and traffic volume, it causes traffic congestion. Generally, High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes may increase the efficiency of road usage. The main contribution in this paper is to provide the scientific attempt to measure the effectiveness with regard to HOV lanes adaptation using an Integration simulation tool in order to alleviate the traffic congestion in Olympic highway.

  • Several types of mathematical analysis methods are used for port waterway risk assessment based on marine traffic volume. In Korea, a marine traffic congestion model that standardizes the size of the vessels passing through the port waterway is applied to evaluate the risk of the waterway. For example, when marine traffic congestion is high, risk situations such as collisions are likely to occur. However, a scientific review is required to determine if there is a correlation between high density of maritime traffic and a high risk of waterway incidents. In this study, IWRAP Mk2(IALA official recommendation evaluation model) and a marine traffic congestion model were used to analyze the correlation between port waterway risk and marine traffic congestion in the same area. As a result, the linear function of R2 was calculated as 0.943 and it was determined to be significant. The Pearson correlation coefficient was calculated as 0.971, indicating a strong positive correlation. It was confirmed that the port waterway risk and the marine traffic congestion have a strong correlation due to the influence of the common input variables of each model. It is expected that these results will be used in the development of advanced models for the prediction of port waterway risk assessment.

  • In this paper, authors try to assess the marine traffic environment from the viewpoint of the degree of congestion. First, the marine traffic flow simulation is carried out to get the information related to the assessment. The simulation is performed based on the wide investigation of marine traffic environment and some statistical methods. Then the degree of congestion is reasoned by using the reasoning methods of the degree of collision risk made to develop collision avoidance system. The quantified degree of congestion reasoned by this method provides much information needed to the design and the evaluation of marine traffic environment.

  • Uplink overflow in WMSN (Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks) aggravates the resource consumption, delay, and traffic congestion. This paper proposes a new traffic congestion control mechanism using popularity. The proposed mechanism controls congestions by dispersing the media traffic, and it control fairly packets according to priority. This paper proposes PQS (Packet Queue Scheduler) to control fairly packets, and the proposed mechanism provides a fair opportunity to all sensor nodes without a specific location. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism achieves improved performance in throughput, delay ratio, link quality, and buffer queue control ratio compared with those of other existing methods.

  • Differentiated services (DiffServ) has been widely accepted as the service model to adopt for providing quality-ofservice (QoS) over the next-generation IP networks. There is a growing need to support QoS in mobile ad hoc networks. Supporting DiffServ in mobile ad hoc networks, however, is very difficult because of the dynamic nature of mobile ad hoc networks, which causes network congestion. The network congestion induces long transfer packet delay and low throughput which make it very difficult to support QoS in mobile ad hoc networks. We propose DiffServ module to support differentiated service in mobile ad hoc networks through congestion control. Our DiffServ module uses the periodical rate control for real time traffic and also uses the best effort bandwidth concession when network congestion occurs. Network congestion is detected by measuring the packet transfer delay or bandwidth threshold of real time traffic. We evaluate our mechanism via a simulation study. Simulation results show our mechanism may offer a low and stable delay and a stable throughput for real time traffic in mobile ad hoc networks.
