도로의 야간 교통사고 저감을 위한 야광형 포장노면표시 기술개발의 적용성 연구 (A Study on the Application of Glow Line Marking Technology Development for Reducing Traffic Accidents at Nighttime)

  • PURPOSES : This study suggests the application of glow line marking technology for reducing traffic accidents at nighttime. METHODS : In this study, using a statistical analysis, we analyzed the characteristics of traffic accidents occurring at nighttime. Next, the strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) factors were derived based on a current-status analysis of glow line marking technology and road environments. An SO strategy, ST strategy, WO strategy, and WT strategy were established in accordance with the four SWOT factors. RESULTS : This study suggests that the following strategies should be promoted to apply glow line marking technology to a road environment: 1) an activation strategy for the technological development of glow line markings for a new paradigm in reducing traffic accidents, 2) a benefit enhancement strategy applying glow line marking technology in places where nighttime traffic accidents frequently occur, 3) a strategy for the expansion of glow line marking by replacing streetlights, and 4) a strategy for enhancing road applications through the development of various line marking methods in consideration of both performance and costs. CONCLUSIONS : The application of glow line markings in a road environment can contribute to a reduction of traffic accidents at nighttime, and aid energy savings from the replacement of streetlights.

야간의 시인성 저하가 교통사고에 미치는 영향 진단 -경기도 지역의 경부, 서해안, 영동, 서울외곽순환고속도로를 중심으로- (Study on Effect of Low Visibility Condition at Nighttime on Traffic Accident)

  • 이 연구에서는 교통사고 영향요인 중 야간의 시인성 저하가 교통사고 발생에 미치는 영향을 진단하였다. 연구를 위해 경기지역의 경부선, 서해안선, 영동선, 서울외곽순환고속도로의 기본구간을 58개의 소구간으로 분할하였고, 2009년에서 2012년 상반기까지 소구간에서 발생한 교통사고 410건을 이용하여 야간의 어두움으로 인한 시인성 저하가 교통사고에 미치는 영향을 진단하였다. 실험방법은 준실험설계를 준용하여 시인성 외 교통사고에 영향을 주는 변인을 통제하고 음이항 회귀분석을 활용하였다. 조사 결과, 맑음 기상조건에서의 LOS A 상태 등 특정조건에서 주간과 야간의 시인성 차이가 교통사고 발생에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 진단되었다. 그리고 진단 결과를 이용하여 교통사고의 유형과 원인에 대하여 다양한 분석을 시도하였다.

Statistical Analysis of Ship Collision Accidents by Day and Night Times

  • Sunrise and sunset times differ depending on location and date. Previous studies conveniently but monotonously applied day and night times set up. This research defined the daytime and nighttime while considering the time of twilight according to the date and the location of ship collision accidents. Classifying the frequency of ship collision accidents with this standard, we conducted a chi-squared test for the difference between daytime and nighttime. The frequencies of ship collision accidents according to daytime and nighttime was compared by season, month, and time, and all of them showed statistically significant differences. The highest number of daytime ship collisions was 11.6 %, in June, and nighttime collisions peaked at 13.7 %, in December. The most frequent hour for daytime ship collisions was 0700h-0800h, at 10.2 %, and nighttime collisions peaked between 0400h-0500h, at 16.9 %. It is clear that the criteria used in previous studies cited was applied without any theoretical basis and likely only for the convenience of the researchers. It was found that results depend on what criteria are applied to the same research data. This study shows that statistical analyses of marine accidents, traffic volume, and congestion density should be carried out quantitatively while considering daytime and nighttime hours for each particular location and date.

판별분석을 활용한 주·야간 고속도로 교통사고 영향요인 비교연구 (Discriminant Analysis of Factors Affecting Traffic Accident Severity During Daytime and Nighttime)

  • PURPOSES : Low visibility caused by dark surroundings at nighttime affects the likelihood of accidents, and various efforts, such as installing road safety facilities, have been made to reduce accidents at night. Despite these efforts, the nighttime severity index (SI) in Korea was higher than the daytime SI during 2011-2014. This study determined the factors affecting daytime and nighttime accident severity through a discriminant analysis. METHODS : Discriminant analysis. RESULTS : First, drowsiness, lack of attention, and lighting facilities affected both daytime and nighttime accident severity. Accidents were found to be caused by a low ability to recognize the driving conditions and a low obstacle avoidance capability. Second, road conditions and speeding affected only the daytime accident severity. Third, failure to maintain a safe distance significantly affected daytime accident severity and nonsignificantly affected nighttime accident severity. The majority of such accidents were caused by rear-end collisions of vehicles driving in the same direction; given the low relative speed difference in such cases, the shock imparted by the accidents was minimal. CONCLUSIONS : Accidents caused by a failure to maintain a safe distance has lower severity than do accidents caused by other factors.

비교그룹방법을 통한 백색 중앙분리대측 실선 도입의 사고감소효과 연구 (Estimation of Traffic Accident Effectiveness of White Left Shoulder Line Using a Comparison Group Method)

  • PURPOSES : Visibility of lanes on the road improves as retro-reflectivity rises. This helps reduce traffic accidents at nighttime or in bad weather. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of improved visibility on reduction of traffic accidents when the color of the lane in the median of the highway was changed from yellow to white. METHODS : In order to evaluate the accident reduction effect of the white left shoulder line, Hauer (1997)'s Comparison-Group method was chosen as an analysis methodology. The JungBu-2 highway, which is equipped with the white left shoulder line and is in trial operation, was chosen as a target for analysis. Data of accidents for 10 months before and after installation was collected and analyzed. In addition to the number of accidents, the types of accidents were classified into nighttime accidents, accidents in bad weather, and median collisions. The accident reduction effect of improved visibility of lanes was analyzed. RESULTS : The analysis' finding showed that installation of the white left shoulder line decreased the number of accidents by 28%. Moreover, improvement in visibility was effective in reducing nighttime accidents by 67.63%, accidents in bad weather by 55.19%, and median collisions by 48.55%. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the analysis' results in this study, it was concluded that white left shoulder line on the freeway contributed to reduce traffic accidents, especially nighttime accidents, accidents in bad weather, and median collisions.

지방부 신호교차로 주·야간 교통사고 예측모형 개발 및 비교 분석 (Development of Traffic Accident Models at Rural Signalized Intersections by Day and Night)

  • PURPOSES : The purposes of this study are to compare the day and night characteristics and to develop the models of traffic accidents. in Rural Signalized Intersections METHODS : To develop day and night traffic accident models using the Negative Binomial Model, which was constructed for 156 signalized intersections of rural areas, through field investigations and casualty data from the National Police Agency. RESULTS : Among a total of 17 variances, the daytime traffic accident estimate models identified a total of 9 influence factors of traffic accidents. In the case of nighttime traffic accident models, 11 influence factors of traffic accidents were identified. CONCLUSIONS : By comparing the two models, it was determined that the number of main roads was an independent factor for daytime accidents. For nighttime accidents, several factors were independently involved, including the number of entrances to sub-roads, whether left turn lanes existed in major roads, the distances of pedestrian crossings to main roads and sub-roads, lighting facilities, and others. It was apparent that if the same situation arises, the probability of an accident occurring at night is higher than during the day because the speed of travel through intersections in rural areas is somewhat higher at night than during the day.

  • 본 연구의 목적은 CRP (Continuous Risk Profile) 분석을 이용하여 야간에만 교통사고가 많이 발생하는 야간 특화 교통사고 다발구간을 선정하는 방법론을 개발하는 것이다. 또한 이연구의 다른 목적은 CRP 분석을 이용하여 야간 특화 교통사고 다발구간의 특성을 제시하는 것이다. 본 연구에서 CRP 분석은 실제 교통사고 데이터를 이용하며 대상 노선의 교통량 고려해 분석되었다. 또한 CRP 분석에 사용되는 변수는 국내 고속도로의 실정에 적합한 변수로 선정하였다. 본 연구에서는 야간 특화 교통사고를 분석하기 위한 방법으로 야간 CRP에서 주간 CRP를 빼는 방법을 사용하였다. 결과적으로 CRP 분석을 사용하여 야간 특화 교통사고 다발구간을 선정할 수 있었다. 또한 야간 특화 교통사고 다발구간은 IC나 터널이 설치된 구간으로 일반구간과 편차가 있었다. 결론적으로, 야간 특화 교통사고 다발구간 산정에 CRP 분석을 사용할 수 있었으며, IC 또는 터널시설이 설치된 구간에서 야간 특화 교통사고가 많이 발생하여 개선이 필요한 지점으로 선정되었다. 또한 IC 또는 터널시설이 설치된 구간에서 야간 특화 교통사고가 많이 발생한 것은 조명시설로 인한 야간 시인성의 문제에서 요인한 것으로 추론된다.

성별에 따른 주·야간 원형교차로 사고모형 (Circular Intersection Accident Models of Day and Nighttime by Gender)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop models of accidents occurring at circular intersections related to the time of day and night and driver gender, and to provide countermeasures for safer circular intersections. METHODS : Seventy intersections built before 2008 were surveyed for inclusion in the modeling. Traffic accident data from 2008 to 2014 were collected from the TAAS data set of the Road Traffic Authority. Sixteen variables explaining the accidents including geometry and traffic volume were selected from the literature and seven multiple linear regression models were developed using SPSS 20.0. RESULTS : First, the null hypotheses, that the number of traffic accidents are not related to driver gender or time of day, were rejected at a 5% level of significance. Second, seven statistically significant accident models with $R^2$ value of 0.643-0.890 were developed. Third, in daytime models by gender, when the right-turn-only lane was selected as the common variable, the number of lanes, presence of driveways and speed humps, diagrammatic exit destination sign, and total entering traffic volume were evaluated as specific variables. Finally, in nighttime models by gender, when the diagrammatic exit destination sign was selected as the common variable, total entering traffic volume, presence of right-turn-only lanes, number of circulatory road way lanes, and presence of splitter islands and driveways were identified as specific variables. CONCLUSIONS:This study developed seven accident models and analyzed the common and specific variables by time of day and gender. The results suggest approaches to providing countermeasures for safer circular intersections.

진주시 교통사고의 시계열적 공간분포특성 분석 (Analysis of Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Traffic Accidents in Jinju)

  • 도시공간에서 토지이용변화는 교통량을 유발하고 이에 따른 교통사고발생이 상호 밀접한 관계를 갖고 있으므로 토지이용변화에 따른 교통사고발생원인 분석은 교통사고저감대책 수립에 중요한 요소로 판단된다. 이에 지방 중소도시인 진주시를 대상으로 5년간(2009년~2013년)의 교통사고 데이터를 주거지역과 상업지역의 사고 발생빈도와 최근린 분석기법에 의한 군집도를 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 교통사고의 발생빈도는 봄에 가장 많았고 겨울이 가장 작게 발생하였다. 또한 주간과 야간의 교통사고 발생빈도는 주간이 야간에 비해 조금 더 많이 발생하였으나 교통사고발생 군집도는 야간이 주간에 비해 강하게 나타났다. 그리고 토지용도에 따른 교통사고 군집도 분석에서 상업지역은 계절에 따른 변화가 크지 않았으나 주거지역은 겨울철에 군집밀도가 크게 낮아지는 경향을 보였다. 교통사고 유형에 따른 분석 결과 차 대 차의 측면직각추돌사고가 가장 높은 발생빈도를 보였으며 상업지역과 주거지역에 모두 광범위하게 발생되는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과는 도시공간구조에서 교통사고 발생패턴을 파악하는데 중요한 정보가 될 수 있으며, 향후 교통사고저감대책을 수립하는데 유용하게 활용될 것으로 예상된다.

Image Enhancement Technology for Improved Object Recognition in Car Black Box Night

  • Videos recorded on surveillance cameras or by car black boxes at night have distorted images due to illumination variation. Therefore, it is difficult to analyze morphological characteristics of objects, and it is limiting to use such distorted images as evidence in traffic accidents. Image restoration is performed by amplifying the brightness of nighttime images using linearized gamma correction to increase their contrast (which destroys visual information) and by minimizing degradation factors caused by irregular traveling.
