  • Objectives : The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of Traditional Korean Medicine as an adjunctive management for breast cancer treatment. Methods : A 56 year-old female patient diagnosed with stage IA(pT1cN0M0) of breast cancer was admitted our hospital. The patient had surgical resection followed by radiation therapy, and conducted adjuvant therapy with aromatase inhibitor. The patient's chief complaints were dry cough, thirst and fatigue, all of which were caused by radiation therapy. Traditional Korean herbal medicine was prescribed for symptom management. The patient's subjective symptoms such as cough, thirst and fatigue were evaluated by NRS. Results : Fatigue was significantly improved within a week. The severity of dry cough and thirst also was decreased after a few courses of herbal medicine treatment. Conclusion : This case study suggests that Tradition Korean Medicine would be beneficial for the patients who are suffering from adverse effects of the standard treatment of cancer.

  • The active-knee-extension (AKE) test has been used to measure hamstring muscle length. The traditional AKE test measures the popliteal angle to the point of resistance with a 90-degree flexion of the hip fixed by straps, while the stabilized AKE test measures the popliteal angle to the point of resistance with a 90-degree flexion of the hip stabilized using a pressure biofeedback unit providing lumbopelvic stabilization. The purpose of this study was to determine test-retest reliability of the traditional AKE test and stabilized AKE test. Twenty healthy adults participated in the study. The popliteal angles were measured with a digital inclinometer during each test. To assess the test-retest reliability between the 2 test sessions, intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated. The intrasubject coefficient of variation ($CV_{intra}$) was also calculated. To compare the traditional and stabilized AKE tests for changes in pressure, paired t-tests were applied. The results of this study were as follows: 1) ICCs(3,1) value for test-retest reliability was .96 in the traditional AKE test, and was .98 in the stabilized AKE test. 2) The maximal $CV_{intra}$ was 33.7% in the traditional AKE test and 15.7% in the stabilized AKE test. 3) Differences of $6.1{\pm}2.1$ mmHg in pressure were measured in the traditional AKE test, and differences of $1.2{\pm}1.0$ mmHg in pressure were measured in the stabilized AKE test. The results show the traditional and stabilized AKE test to be highly reliable, with test-retest reliability. However, the stabilized AKE test represented less variation and more stabilization than the traditional AKE test. Further study is needed to measure the inter-rater reliability of the stabilized AKE test for generalization and clinical application.

Methods: The overweight patients who had been suffering from Oligomenorrhea visited to OBGY department of Dongseo Oriental Medical Hospital. We diagnosed their cases as Supdam(濕痰) on the authority of the first oriental medical examination and treated them with Traditional Korean Medical therapy such as herbal medication and acupuncture therapy. The process of symptoms was evaluated by checking their Menstrual periods. Results: After Traditional Korean Medical therapy. Three cases of Oligomenorrhea were improved. Their Menstrual periods were shortened and Menstrual cycles were maintained. Conclusion: This study shows that overweight or obesity is connected with Oligomenorrhea. Traditional Korean Medical therapy can be effective for the management of Oligomenorrhea.

Methods : In this case, a 25 years old male patient has suffered by schizophrenia for 2 years and by Chronic rhinitis for 9 months. During 171 days, we treated the patient with Korean Traditional treatment. Specially blood-Letting therapy helped the patient to decrease the auditory hallucination, catalepsy and retardation as well as the snuffles. Results : After treatment. the chief complain and accompanying symptoms were subsided and improved. And Personal and social performance scale was increased. Conclusions : According to this study, Korean Traditional treatment such as Blood-Letting therapy, acupuncture and heb-medication is effective for the cure of Jeon-zeong(癲證) with Chronic hypertrophic rhinitis.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to review the research trends in treatment for acute alcohol intoxication in traditional Chinese medicine. Methods : 19 studies were selected by searching CNKI(China National Knowledge Infrastructure) from 2006 to 2011, and we performed a systemic review of them. Results : All studies are controlled clinical trials using pharmacopuncture therapy. Each experimental group was given various kinds of pharmacopuncture therapy, whereas each control group was given another western medicine or treatment. Emergent treatment was used in both groups. The results of 15 studies showed that pharmacopuncture therapy has an effect on the treatment of acute alcohol intoxication. However the quality of these clinical trials wasn't high. Conclusions : It seems that the researches for acute alcohol intoxication have been performed actively in traditional Chinese medicine. We hope that our study can activate clinical research for this disorder in Korean traditional medicine.

  • Background: In the treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, the goals of traditional physical therapy are not only to reduce the inflammatory process leading to pain, but also to decrease joint overload and muscle hyperactivity. To achieve those goals, physical therapists generally use a photo-therapy, joint mobilization, and massage. Objects: To examine the impact of an unloading technique using non-elastic taping on the pain, opening mouth, functional level, and quality of life in patients with TMJ disorder. Method: Twenty patients with TMJ disorder were included in this study and randomly divided into the experimental ($n_1$=10), and control ($n_2$=10) groups. Traditional physical therapy including massage and stretching for 30 min was performed in both groups. Non-elastic taping was performed in the experimental group after traditional physical therapy, and they were recommended to keep the tape attached for 12 hours. Outcomes for pain, functional level, and quality of life were measured using a survey. The opening mouth was measured using a general ruler. Result: Significant differences were observed in the pain level, opening mouth, functional level, and quality of life after the intervention and on follow-up in both groups. However, we found that while the levels of all parameters were maintained throughout the follow-up period in the experimental group, the functional status level was not maintained throughout the follow-up period in the control group. Conclusion: Our unloading technique using non-elastic tape results comparable to those achieved by traditional physical therapy in the treatment of TMJ. However, the unloading taping method using non-elastic tape is more effective than traditional physical therapy in maintaining the impact of intervention.

  • Most patients treated by physical therapists have suffered some neurological trauma resulting from disease or injury. The traditional teaching used to be that damage of central neurons is irreversible. However, it has been necessary to cast aside this traditional view because of accumulating evidence that the brain is endowed with remarkable plasticity. This paper reviews the literature relating to neuroplasticity within the brain and draws implications pertinent to physical therapy practice.
