  • Objectives Although there have been someone who pointed out declining tendency of pure traditional diagnosis, there are no objective survey results on present state of diagnosis among Korean Medicine Doctors (KMDs). So we did a descriptive survey study to show traditional diagnostic modality usage among them. Materials and methods: 73 samples of responded questionnaire in Busan area were collected and descriptively studied. Results (1) U code (in KCD-6) usage showed low level (28.7%). (2) Diagnostic apparatuses for traditional medicine are rarely used. For example, pulse diagnosis machine was reported to be used only by 9.7 % of KMDs. (3) KMDs still prefer the treatment based on pattern identification and symptomatic therapy rather than treatments based on disease identification of modern biomedicine. Conclusion Overall, the portion of pattern identification is still high among KMDs, some kind of diagnostic methods which support pattern identification showed lack of usage.

Fifty patients received Korean medicine treatments (acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medicine) and Western medicine treatments (polydeoxyribonucleotide, and extracorporeal shock wave therapy). Evaluation methods used were comparison before and after ultrasound (P9), and numeric rating scale scores. Results revealed a significant improvement in the level of pain and evaluation of improvement using ultrasound. Moreover, it was suggested that Korean-Western cooperative medicine treatment may be effective for the treatment of plantar fasciitis.

  • Background: Several Korean medical doctors have been practicing applied kinesiology (AK), invented in 1964 by Dr. George J Goodheart, USA. Although the efficacy of traditional acupuncture (TA) and pharmacopucture treatment for lumbar conditions/diseases has been examined, the possible benefits of combining TA and AK have not been reported. Therefore, the aim of this study was to report the effects of combining TA and AK treatment for lumbar disorders using the Japanese Orthopedic Association lumbar score (JOALS) assessment. Methods: There were 21 outpatients treated at Samse Korean Traditional Hospital between March 2018 and September 2018, who presented with L4/L5 or L5/S1 root radiculopathy associated with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and lumbar herniation of intervertebral disk (LHID). They were treated 10×(2 sessions per week, for 5 weeks) with TA and AK approaches that included a category block, manipulation or strain/counterstrain treatments. The primary outcome was mainly assessed using the JOALS score which was used before (0 ×), during (5 ×), and after treatment (10 ×). Results: There were 19 patients diagnosed with LSS and 2 were diagnosed with LHID. Using the JOALS assessment, TA and AK combined approaches improved the lumbar conditions of all 21 patients after 5 × treatmentsand continued to improve after 10 × treatments (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Combined TA and AK treatment was effective in treating spinal conditions/diseases. Prospective, relevant, well-controlled protocols for TA and AK therapies for various conditions are needed.

  • Objective: This study reports on three cases of cerebellar artery infarction patients treated by traditional Korean medicine.Method: Three patients with cerebellar artery infarction according to cerebellar artery were treated by traditional Korean medicine at the traditional Korean medicine hospital of Daejeon University. The posterior cerebral artery (PCA) infarction patient had ataxia, dysarthria, gait disturbance, and dizziness; the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) infarction patient had facial palsy, dizziness, and hearing loss; and the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) infarction patient had gait disturbance and dizziness. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, and pharmacopuncture were used as traditional Korean medicine treatments during hospitalization. We then observed any improvement in the symptoms. Results: The scale for the assessment and rating of ataxia (SARA) score (gait, stance) of the PCA infarction patient was reduced from 8.6 to 2.2, while the dizziness numerical rating scale (NRS) score was reduced from 10 to 2 after treatment. The Yanagihara score of the AICA infarction patient was reduced from 27 to 14, while the dizziness NRS score was reduced from 10 to 2 after treatment. The SARA score (gait, stance) of the PICA infarction patient was reduced from 7.4 to 1.0, and the dizziness NRS score was reduced from 10 to 1 after treatment. Conclusion: Traditional Korean medicine appears to be effective in treating cerebellar infarction symptoms.

  • The aim of this study was to report the effect of Korean medicine treatments and vestibular rehabilitation practice on an stroke patient with dizziness. The patient received Korean medicine treatments, such as acupuncture and herbal medication, and vestibular rehabilitation practice. The effects of treatments were assessed with the Korean dizziness handicap inventory, Korean activities-specific balance confidence scale, Korean vestibular disorders activities of daily living scale. Researchers conducted gait analysis for evaluation patient's gait disturbance's improvement during treatments. The intensity of dizziness were significantly reduced after the complete treatment. After treatment with traditional Korean medicine and vestibular rehabilitation practice, the patient showed significant improvements in symptoms and gait parameters. This case proved that combined therapy of Korean medicine treatment and vestibular rehabilitation practice can be useful for stroke patients who suffered from dizziness. however, studies of larger populations are required in the future.

  • This study reports the effect of acupotomy for patients diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis(LSS). We treated three patients diagnosed with LSS using acupotomy. We measured the Numerical Rating Scale(NRS), Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) scores and Odom's criteria before and after treatment to assess improvements in symptoms and functions. In all patients, NRS, ODI scores and Odom's criteria were improved. We found a beneficial effect with acupotomy for three patients diagnosed with LSS. Thus, these data suggest LSS may be treated successfully with acupotomy.
