Integrated switched reluctance motor drive as an electric vehicle battery charger is presented in this paper. The SRM, which is used as the traction power in the driving mode, is used in the charge circuit to improve the power factor of charging system. The charging circuit can share the power switches of the asymmetric converter and phase windings of SRM to charge the battery, and can reduce the size and cost of the system in the plug-in system. To keep the rotor at standstill, zero torque control method is proposed. Since the inductances of the SRM windings are not same at any stop position, the charger controller controls the reference current to satisfy the total charging current with PFC and zero torque condition. A novel cubic equation method is proposed as a current reference distributor of the charging controller. Simulations are performed by MATLAB software and results satisfy the Effectiveness of proposed battery charging system.

Accurate positioning of a throttle valve is required to implement the traction control system(TCS) which improves acceleration performance in slippery roads. In this research, position control system is developed for the main throttle actuator(MTA) system which uses one throttle actuation for small volume and DC servo motor for fast response. In order to drive DC motor, PWM signal generator and PWM amplifier were built and interfaced to the motor and controller. Digital PID control law is used as basic control algorithm. In order to prevent overshoot and improve accuracy, velocity profiles are generated and implemented whenever the targer throttle angle is given from the TCS controller. Thanks to velocity profiles, the control performance was very good and only one set of PID gains was used to cover the entire operating range. Also, the resolution of position is about 0.4$^{\circ}C$, which is better than that of stepping motor also used as throttle actuator in some products. The response time of the developed system is also fast enough to implement the engine control based TCS algorithm.

This work deals with dynamic analysis of a monorail system with magnetic caterpillar where magnets are embedded inside each articulated element of the caterpillar, augmenting traction force of main rubber wheels to climb up slope up to 15 degree grade. Considerations are first given to determine stiffness of the primary and secondary suspension springs in order for the natural frequencies of car body and bogie associated with vertical, pitch, roll and yaw motion to be within generally accepted range of 1-2 Hz. Equations for calculating magnetic force needed to climb up given slope are derived, and a magnetic caterpillar system for 1/6 scale monorail is designed based on the derivation. To assess the hill climbing ability and cornering stability, and make sure smooth operation of the side and vertical guiding wheels which is critical for safety, a multibody model that takes into account of every component level design characteristics of car, bogie, and caterpillar is set up. Through hill climbing simulation and comparison with measurement of the limit slope, the validity of the analysis and design of the magnetic caterpillar system are demonstrated. Also by studying the curving behavior, maximum curving speed without rollover, functioning of lateral motion constraint system, the effects of geometry of guiding rails are studied.

Military vehicles, compared to conventional vehicles, require higher driving performance, quieter operation, and longer driving distances with minimal fuel supplies. The series hybrid electric vehicle can be driven with no noise and has high initial startup performance, because it uses only a traction motor that has a high startup torque to drive the vehicle. Moreover, the fuel economy can be improved if the vehicle is hybridized. In series hybrid electric vehicles, the electric generation system, which consists of an engine and a generator, supplies electric energy to a battery or traction motor depending on the vehicle driving state and battery state of charge (SOC). The control strategy determines the operation of the generation system. Thus, the fuel economy of the series hybrid electric vehicle relies on the control strategy. In this study, thermostat, power-follower, and combined strategies were compared, and a 37% improvement in the fuel economy was implemented using the combined control strategy suggested in this study.

This paper describes a fault-tolerant driving control strategy for an independent steer-by-wire system in sixwheel-drive/six-wheel-steering vehicles. An algorithm has been designed to realize vehicle maneuverability that is as close as possible to that of non-faulty vehicles by inducing high slip ratio of the wheel through a faulty steer-by-wire system in order to reduce the lateral tire force, which is resistant to the yaw motion. Considering the transition of the longitudinal tire force of a wheel with a faulty steer-by-wire component, the longitudinal tire forces are optimally distributed to the other wheels. Fault-tolerant driving performance has been investigated via computer simulations. Simulation studies show that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the maneuverability of a vehicle with a faulty steer-by-wire system as compared to the optimal traction distribution method.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle is driven by the engine, the primary traction motor, and the secondary auxiliary motor generating the electric power for battery charging. Secondary auxiliary motor should be connected to the engine or separated from the engine by the clutch system. This paper presents the position controller of the BLDC motor for the clutch system of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The BLDC motor can be applied to the clutch system in spite of it's low accuracy of the position control due to high gear ratio between the clutch and the motor. Since the attachment and the detachment between the motor and the engine should be carried out within 0.3 seconds, the position controller with fast acceleration and deceleration is implemented. For the torque control with braking operation for the BLDC motor, the modified bipolar PWM method with low current ripple compared to the conventional unipolar PWM is presented. The position control performance of the BLDC motor for the clutch system is verified through the simulation and experiments.

The interaction of magnetic field in the frequency range of 9~150 kHz radiating from a railway system with wireless systems has been the cause of radio frequency interference. In this paper, the equivalent circuit model of the RFI noise is proposed through source and transfer path analysis, and it is confirmed that the switching noise of several kHz that occurs a vehicle traction drive system and a substation is radiated by forming the loop circuit with a feeder line by a rolling stock. And the validity of the proposed equivalent circuit model is verified by analyzing the effects of RC banks installed in the real railway between Guri and Guksu stations, the RFI noise can be effectively mitigated by loading suitable capacitance between rail and feeding line.

A preliminary study of a new pulsatile pump that will work to a frequency greater than 1 Hz, is presented. The fluid-structure interaction between a Newtonian blood flow and a piston drive that moves with periodic speed is simulated. The mechanism is of double effect and has four valves, two at the input flow and two at the output flow; the valves are simulated with specified velocity of closing and reopening. The simulation is made with finite elements software named COMSOL Multiphysics 3.3 to resolve the flow in a preliminary planar configuration. The geometry is 2D to determine areas of high speeds and high shear stresses that can cause hemolysis and platelet aggregation. The opening and closing valves are modelled by solid structure interacting with flow, the rhythmic opening and closing are synchronized with the piston harmonic movement. The boundary conditions at the input and output areas are only normal traction with reference pressure. On the other hand, the fluid structure interactions are manifested due to the non-slip boundary conditions over the piston moving surfaces, moving valve contours and fix pump walls. The non-physiologic frequency pulsatile pump, from the viewpoint of fluid flow analysis, is predicted feasible and with characteristic of low hemolysis and low thrombogenesis, because the stress tension and resident time are smaller than the limit and the vortices are destroyed for the periodic flow.
