Leiomyoma is extremely rare benign tumor of the trachea. A case of leiomyoma of the trachea is described in a 36-year-old man. The patient had a brief history of asthma-like symptoms. Computed tomography of the chest revealed the ovoid lower trachea mass, which was occupying about 80% of the tracheal lumen. At fiberoptic bronchoscopy highly vascularized round mass was seen on the membranous portion of the lower trachea. The tumor was excised by segmental sleeve resection and end-to-end anastomosis of the trachea was performed. Postoperative course was uneventful and bronchoscopic findings showed clear healing of the anastomotic site.

Leiomyoma of the trachea is a rare benign tumor. A case of leiomyoma of the thoracic trachea is described in a 46-year-old woman. The patient complained of productive cough, dyspnea and blood-tinged sputum since July 1993. Plain chest radiographs were not helpful, but computed tomography of the chest showed an intraluminal tracheal mass just above the carina. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a broad based, nodular mass rising from the posterior tracheal wall, just above the carina. The tumor was excised by sleeve resection and end-to-end anastomosis of the trachea was performed. The patient`s postoperative course was uneventful. She was discharged on the 20th postoperative day.

Primary benign tracheal tumors are exceedingly rare and leiomyoma has the least frequency among them. It is important to recognize early without misdiagnosis such as asthma because it is curable. A 41 year-old female was admitted for dyspnea and choking since November 1991. Under the impression of asthma, she received medication. Symptom was not improved and thus chest CT scan was performed. There was endotracheal tumor mass which was located just above the carina and arose from the right lateral tracheal wall with broad base. We successfully resected the tumor mass including trachea and the defected area of trachea was reconstructed with autologous graft using pericrdium & rib cartilage. During the follow up period, no complication was developed.

Leiomyoma of the trachea is a very rare tumor, and the tracheal tumor is frequently misdiagnosed and treated as bronchial asthma. We report here a case of leiomyoma of the trachea which was successfully resected. A 40-year-old woman has sufferred from a repeated episode of asthmatic attack for two years. Intensive therapy for asthma had no beneficial effect on her respiratory symptoms, and wheezing and stridor did not disappear. Chest CT and bronchoscopy revealed a pedunculated mass on the trachea just above the carina. Wedge resection of the trachea and right main stem bronchus including the tumor and end-to-end anastomosis was performed. The result of the pathologic examination of the tumor was tracheal leiomyoma. Her postoperative course was uneventful and postoperative bronchoscopic findings showed clear healing of the anastomosis site.

She was admitted for dyspnea, coughing and sputum for 3 years. Under the impression of asthma she was treated but not improved. Chest CT showed an intraluminal tracheal mass just above the carina. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a round intraluminal mass on the membranous portion of trachea 4cm above the carina. The tumor was excised by wedge resection and end-to-end anastomosis of the trachea was performed. The pathologic examination revealed leiomyoma of the trachea. We report a case of leiomyoma of the trachea which was successfully resected.

Tracheal leiomyoma is a rare benign tumor, which is composed of transformed cells of mesenchymal origin. We describe a case in which digital tomosynthesis was useful to evaluate a tracheal tumor that was overlooked on initial chest radiographs.

In the bronchial stenosis due to benign causes, bronchoplastic procedure has been considered as one of the best surgical treatment, because of preserving normal lung tissue below the affected bronchi. We have treated 2 patients (tracheal leiomyoma, bronchial stenosis due to chronic inflammatory cicatrization) that suffered from benign tracheal and bronchial stenosis by bronchoplastic procedure using autologous costal cartilage covered with pericardium. Patients showed good patency of bronchoplastic bronchi in bronchoscopic examination that was performed at 6 months afte the operation.

Endobronchial leiomyoma is extremely rare and accounts for less than 2% of benign tumors of the lower respiratory tract. Leiomyomas are predominantly found in the young and the middle aged : of the average age being 35 years for bronchial and lung parenchymal lesions and 40.6 years for tracheal lesions. The symptom depends on the location of the tumor, its size, and changes in the lung distal to the lesion. A 37-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of coughing. Bronchoscopy revealed complete obstruction of the right main bonchus at the carina by an oval-shaped, nonulcerative, smooth, and pinkish-tan tumor with a broad margin and extended to the left main bronchus. A biopsy was performed and showed a benign spindle cell tumor. A right pneumonectomy was performed because of chronic infection, and the lung could not expanded during aeration. The histological diagnosis of the resected specimen was leiomyoma. The postoperative course was uneventful.
