This research has been conducted to investigate the characteristics of hydraulic behavior within the PAC contactor, the rectangular shape sedimentation basin without inclined tube and the other one with inclined tube those are parts of demonstration plants(capacity : $2,000m^3/d$) in Korea Institute of Water and Environment. As results of tracer tests, the flow within PAC contactor was evaluated to divided into plug flow and dead space distinctly, and characteristics of dead space was close to that of CSTR(Complete/continuous Stirred Tank Reactor). Also, considering Reynolds number, Froude number, Morill, Modal, NCSTR Inex and plug flow/mixed flow fraction, in the case of the rectangular shape sedimentation basin without inclined tube, the characteristics of flow pattern was close to CSTR. On the other hand, in the case of the basin with inclined tube, the region of CSTR decreased precisely compared with the case of no-tube. Until now we have recognized that the inclined hydraulic structure just reduces the surface loading rate within a sedimentation basin. Actually besides, the inclined structure have an important effect on the hydraulic behavior within the basin.
In this study we apply and compare a variety of numerical methods for calculating residence time distribution in decay tanks, a major design component in the for reducing N-16 radioactivity. Our research group has used a streamlined method using user-defined particle numbers. However, this streamlined method has several problems, including low exiting particle ratios, particle diminishing, and unphysical time distribution, among others. We utilize three numerical methods to establish residence time and time distribution (streamlined, discrete phase method [DPM], and user defined scalar [UDS]) and subsequently compare the averaged results of each. The three tests demonstrate the flow features within the decay tanks, which are then numerically simulated to enable comparison. We conclude that although each simulation predicts similar time averages, the UDS methodology provides a smoother time distribution and tracer contour plots at specific times.
This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of soil-cement walls (SCWs) to control leachate from a leaking landfill site. Tracer tests revealed that the SCW was effective to control groundwater seepage. Approximately two-months of curing period appeared to be sufficient to ensure thorough containment of landfill leachate, although a three-week period was not enough. The water quality of the monitoring wells after construction of the SCWs met the groundwater quality standard of the korean Waste Management Act, except for bacteria and coliform groups. Also an analysis of a spring water around the landfill showed that the concentrations of ammonia, inorganic nitrogen and soluble manganese which had been common contaminants in the spring water decreased dramatically after constructing the walls. Therefore, the results suggested that a SCW can be an attractive method to control leachate from a leaking landfill site.
The fluorescence ratio method for processing planar laser induced fluorescence(PLIF) data was generalized for quantitative imaging of the injectant mole-fraction in supersonic mixing flowfields. The original fluorescence ratio approach was introduced by Hartfield et al. for tests in a special closed-loop wind tunnel to eliminate the effects of thermodynamic property variations in compressible flowfields and to provide a quantitative means of mole-fraction measurement. However, they implicitly assumed that the tracer molecules were seeded at the same fraction in both main and secondary flows. In the present study, we proposed generalizing the Hartfield method by considering differences in the tracer seeding rates. We examined the generalized method in a mixing flowfield formed by sonic transverse injection into a Mach 1.8 supersonic air stream. The injectant molefraction distribution obtained from PLIF data processed by our new approach showed better agreement with the gas chromatograph than one based on the Hartfield method.
In this study, the cone type baffle (CTB) was developed to improve the flow distribution in an upflow bioreactor. It was composed of two different zones (anoxic and oxic) by inserting the CTB in the middle of the bioreactor. Based on the results of the dye tracer tests, hydraulic retention time (HRT) for the anoxic, oxic and total volume of the bioreactor was found to be 0.998, 1.996 and 2.994 hr, respectively. And the theoretical HRT for each volume was 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 hr, respectively. The values of HRT obtained from the tests coincide with theoretical values. Therefore, the flow pattern for each zone inside the bioreactor, which was divided by the CTB, was dominated by complete mix flow rather than plug flow. Based on the results of the transection measurements, the DO concentration for each zone inside the bioreactor was clearly distinguished. Consequently, the CTB played an important role in the separation of anoxic and oxic zones. Also, the each pollutans were reduced gradually along the height in the oxic zone. The reason is that the biomass in the media layer (Port 4 and 5) was higher than that in the mixed liquor layer without the media (Port 2 and 3).
Uncontrolled landfills have been a threat to surrounding environment and human health. To examine the effect of hydrogeological properties on plume migration caused by landfill leachate, two representative landfills in Cheonan and Wonju were selected. In these landfills, seven and eight groundwater wells were installed respectively to monitor water quality and waterlevel, and to perform hydraulic and tracer tests. This study reports preliminary evaluation results including site characteristics, waterlevel measurement and slug tests.
From early 2000, many researchers in the groundwater and soil environment remediation project tried to calculate the pollution level and pollution remediation cost and reflect it in the design. In addition, by identifying the movement characteristics of oil pollutants in the underground environment, many researchers tried to derive design factors necessary for pollution purification. However, although the test should be conducted in an area contaminated with oil, the toxicity and risk are too great for testing by deliberately leaking pollutants that are harmful to the human body. And as oil-contaminated areas are promoted by military units such as returned US military bases, there is a limit to access by the general public. In addition, since the indoor simulation test and the field application test have been carried out separately from each other, it was difficult to compare and review various simulation tests Therefore, in this study, PITT (Partitioning Interwell Tracer Test) and analysis methods were specifically presented through actual tests so that field workers could easily use them with the help of the military base and the Korea Rural Community Corporation Soil Environment Restoration Team. However, in order to directly reflect the distribution tracer test results in the pollution remediation design, it is necessary to reduce the analysis errors by comparing the analysis results of the existing soil pollution survey, physical exploration, and numerical modeling. In addition, it is judged to be cautious in the analysis because errors can easily occur due to various factors such as the type of oil at the polluted site, the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer, and the skill of the researcher.
Microcystin-LR, one of algal toxins induced by the eutrophication of a reservoir, is known to be harmful to human by adversely affecting our liver and brain. Hypochlorous acid is very efficient to remove Microcystin-LR in a clear well. The previous researches showed that CT, pH and temperature affected removal rate in batch tests. It was noted that hydrodynamic properties of clear well could also influence its removal rate. A mathematical model was built using an axial dispersion reactor model and software was used to simulate the removal rate. The model consisted of the second order differential equations including dispersion, convection, Microcystin-LR reaction with chlorine. Kinetic constants were obtained through batch tests with chlorine. They were $0.430{\times}10^{-3}L/mg/sec$ and $0.143{\times}10^{-3}L/mg/sec$ for pH 7.0 and 8.1, respectively. The axial dispersion reactor model was shown to be useful for the numerical model through conservative tracer tests. The numerical model successfully estimated the removal rate of Microcyctin-LR in a clear well. Numerical simulations showed that a small dispersion number, low pH and long hydraulic retention time were critical for higher removal rate with same chlorine dosage. This model could be used to optimize the operation of a clear well during an eutrophication season.
Quantifying rates of microbial processes under subsurface conditions is difficult, and is most commonly approximated by laboratory studies using aquifer materials. In this study a single-well, 'push-pull' test method is adapted for the in situ determination of denitrification rates in groundwater aquifers. The rates of stepwise reduction of nitrate to nitrite, nitrous oxide, and molecular nitrogen were determined by performing a series of push-pull tests at an experimental well field of Korea University. A single Transport Test, one Biostimulation Test, and four Activity Tests were conducted for this study. Transport tests are conducted to evaluate the mobility of solutes used in subsequent tests. These included bromide (a conservative tracer), fumarate (a carbon and/or source), and nitrate (an electron acceptor). At this site, extraction phase breakthrough curves for all solutes were similar, indicating apparent conservative transport of the solutes prior to biostimulation. Biostimulation tests were conducted to stimulate the activity of indigenous heterotrophic denitrifyinc microorganisms. Biostimulation was detected by the simultaneous production of carbon dioxide and nitrite after each injection. Activity tests were conducted to quantify rates of nitrate, nitrite, and nitrous oxide reduction. Estimated zero-order degradation rates decreased in the order nitrate '||'&'||'gt; nitrite '||'&'||'gt; nitrous oxide. The series of push-pull tests developed and field tested in this study should prove useful for conducting rapid, low-cost feasibi1ity assessments for in situ denitrification in nitrate-contaminated aquifers.

Single-well-gas-sparging tests were developed and evaluated for assessing the feasibility of in-situ aerobic cometabolism of trichloroethylene (TCE), using propane as a growth substrate. To evaluate transport characteristics of dissolved solutes [sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) or bromide (non-reactive tracers), propane (a growth substrate), ethylene, propylene (nontoxic surrogates to probe for CAH transformation activity), and DO], push-pull transport tests were performed. Mass balance showed about 90% of the injected bromide and about 80% of the injected SF6 were recovered, and the recoveries of other solutes were comparable with bromide and slightly higher than SF6. A series of Gas-Sparging Biostimulation tests were performed by sparging propane/oxygen/argon/SF6 gas mixtures, and temporal ground water samples were obtained from the injection well under natural gradient 'drift' conditions. The decreased time for propane depletion and the longer time to deplete SF6 as a conservative tracer indicate the progress of biostimulation. Gas-Sparging Activity tests were performed. .Propane utilization, DO consumption, and ethylene and propylene cometabolism were well demonstrated. The stimulated propane-utilizers cometabolized ethylene and propylene to produce ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, as cometabolic by-products, respectively. Gas-Sparging Acetylene Blocking tests were performed by sparging gas mixtures including acetylene to demonstrate the involvement of monooxygenase enzymes. Gas substrate degradation was essentially completely Inhibited in the presence of acetylene, and no production of the corresponding oxides was also observed. The Gas-Sparging tests supports the evidences that the successive stimulation of propane-oxidizing microorganisms, cometabolic transformation of ethylene and propylene by the enzyme responsible for methane and propane degradation.
