  • Liquid crystal displays (LCD's) are continuously coated with some chemicals in the clean room of a factory. Spreading of these chemicals is causing serious problems both in controlling clean room quality as well as to the workers inside the factory. It is required to alleviate or properly control the offensive odor which is mainly composed of propylene glycol mono ethyl acetate, novolak resin and photo active compound. The control strategy employed is to bleed the offensive odor gas out the clean room. A full scale 3D CFD model was created with anisotropic porous media, chemical species transport with no volumetric reaction, and thermal diffusion with propane gas (tracer gas) to simulate the odor spreading. A segregated implicit solver with standard k-$\varepsilon$ model is employed. The detailed CFD analysis made it possible to develop an effective method of ventilating the coater room and optimizing their capacities.

  • The internal environment in pig house is closely related to the animal productivity. In addition, it is important to consider a working environment inside the pig house due to high gas and dust concentrations. The poor working environment inside the pig house can cause health problems including respiratory diseases. To analyze the working environment, it is important to evaluate the ventilation efficiency to effectively remove harmful gases and dust. The purpose of this study is to develop a 3D CFD model to analyze the working environment in the pig house. CFD model was validated by comparing air temperature distributions between CFD computed and field measured data. The average air flow rate at the pig height was 40.1 % lower than the working height when incoming air was concentrated on upper layer by the installed ventilation system on the experimental pig house. Using the validated CFD model, the regional ventilation efficiency was computed by the TGD(tracer gas decay) method at the pig and working heights. There was a difference of ventilation efficiency on 14 % between the air stagnated section and the rest sections. Stagnated gas concentration can be effected by animal and human health.

  • A fundamental investigation has been conducted on the combustion of single particle of a sub-bituminous coal char burning at different temperatures and residence times. The lab-scale test setup consisted of a drop tube furnace where gas temperatures varied from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1400^{\circ}C$. A calibrated two color pyrometer, mounted on the top of the furnace, provided temperature profiles of luminous particle during a char oxidation. An amount of char mass reacted during the reaction is measured with thermogravimetry analyzer by using an ash tracer method. As a result, mass and area reactivity as well as reaction rate coefficients are determined for the char burning at atmospheric pressure condition.

  • This study investigates the air leakage and heat transfer characteristics of a commercially available rotary-type air-to-air heat exchanger with a fiber polyester matrix. Crossover leakage between the exhaust and supply air is measured using a tracer gas method for various ventilation rates and rotational speeds of the wheel. A correlation equation for the leakage is obtained by summing up pressure leakage and carryover leakage. The pressure leakage is observed to be a function of ventilation rate only, and the carryover leakage is found to be a linear function of wheel speed. The real efficiency of the heat exchanger can be obtained from its apparent efficiency by taking into account the leakage ratio. The heat recovery efficiency decreases, as the ventilation rate increases. As the wheel speed increases, however, the efficiency increases initially but reaches a constant value for the speeds over 10rpm.

  • In this study, three different supply diffuser types(desktop, floor and ceiling) are compared in view of their ability to distribute supply air to the workstation breathing zone. The measurements on the age of air and the air change effectiveness using the tracer gas method are carried out to analyze the ventilation performance for provision of fresh air between the diffusers. The desktop diffuser type could deliver air directly to the occupants breathing zone with a high degree of effectiveness. The measured local air change effectiveness of the desktop diffuser in the breathing zone was usually 1.13 to 1.23 times greater than that of ceiling and floor diffusers. When the minimum outside air change rate as specified using ASHRAE Standard 62R is supplied with a desktop diffuser type, the volume of outside air can be reduced 13 to 23%, resulting in a commensurate in ventilation energy use.

  • Nitrification and denitrification are important processes in the landfill site as they are deeply related with degradation and stabilization of refuse. Also nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) which is released from both nitrification and denitrification is known as greenhouse gas (GHG). The purpose of this study was to clarify the process by which $N_2O$ produced using $^{15}N$ isotope. Nitrate which was labeled to 10.08% with $^{15}KNO_3$ was used and $N_2O$ was analyzed with GC mass. Results was that even also when $O_2$ of bulk was 15%, $N_2O$ was released from denitrification. And as concentrations of $O_2$ increase, sum of $N_2O$ was released from denitrification. And as concentrations of $O_2$ increase, sum of $N_2O$ and $N_2$ was decreased and ratios of $N_2O$ in the reduced gases were increased. FISH technics also adaped to confirm whether which of nitrifiers existed in the substrates. When NEU was used of which the target was ammonia oxidizing bacteria, nitrifier was not detected at all. So it was confirmed that during the reaction denitrification was dominant process. Total bacteria distributions which were detected by EUB probe explained that as $O_2$ increase the number of bacteria also increase, but between the 10-15% of $O_2$ there was no any differences.

  • In order to investigate the origin of sulfate in rain waters and to evaluate the feasibility of using sulfur isotope method as a tracer of atmospheric pollutants, the sulfur isotopic ratio of sulfate in rain waters collected in Chonju city from October 1994 to March 1995 was monitored and was compared with those of possible sources proposed by previous works. The pH of rain waters shows an intermediate acidic range from 4.45 to 6.88 and their daily variation appears to be well correlated with to the amount of precipitation. The sulfur isotopic ratios of sulfate in rain waters show a highly restricted range from 0.0 to + 1.8‰. The ${\delta}^{34}S$ values are similar to those of soil and pine tree surrounding Chonju city, but largely deviate from those of China. D-parameter($d={\delta}D-8{\delta}^{18}O$) of rain waters varies from 9.4 to 28.8. The values indicate that the rain waters in Chonju city are originated from the rainy front of China continent. All data obtained from this study suggested that sulfate in the rain waters collected in Chonju city was mainly derived from the sulfur dioxide gas emitted by the petroleum combustion. Therefore, sulfur isotopic study for the precipitation provided an excellent tool for environmental assessment in this region and for tracing the source of atmospheric pollutants.
