  • Two feeding trials were conducted to determine the effect of inclusion levels or deletion of vitamin-trace mineral (VM) premixes on growth performance and pork quality in finishing pigs. In exp. 1, a total of ninety-six crossbred pigs $(Landrace\;{\times}\;Yorkshire\;{\times}\;Duroc,\;85.09{\pm}3.12kg)$ were used for a 4-week feeding triaL Treatments were premix supplementation at the level of 50% (Control), 100%, 150%, and 200% of NRC (1998) requirements for vitamins and trace minerals. In exp. 2, a total of one hundred and eight crossbred pigs $(Landrace\;{\times}\;Yorkshire\;{\times}\;Duroc,\;84.76{\pm}0.58kg)$ were used for a 4-week feeding trial. Treatments were premix supplementation at the level of 0% (Control), 200% VM, and 200% vitamin E and Se listed in NRC (1998) requirements. Average daily gain (ADG) and feed/gain (F/G) were the highest at 150% VM addition level (quadratic, p<0.05) among treatments. Dressing percentage and backfat thickness in pigs were not affected by different addition levels of VM premixes. Pork stability in terms of TBARS was linearly (p<0.05) improved as dietary VM premix was increased (exp. 1). ADG, F/G and pork stability (TBARS) were also reduced (p<0.05) when VM premixes were deleted. However, supplementation of vitamin E and Se improved (p<0.05) ADG and pork stability when pigs were fed diets without VM premixes (exp. 2). In conclusion, deleting dietary VM premixes gave negative effects on growth performance and pork quality for the last 4 weeks of finishing period.

  • The heavy minerals of a barred estuarine and lagoonal sediments along the North Carolina coast have been studied with more than one hundred samples. Currents, salinity, and pH exhibit well-developed gradients from the upstream parts of the estuaries on the west toward the open ocean on the east. Twenty- four heavy minerals were identified in sediments of the study area. However, less than half of these occur frequently and the remainder exist only in minor quantities or trace amounts. Heavy minerals usually comprise less than 1% of the sample but vary from sample to sample. The maximum amount of heavy minerals in sediments of sounds and estuaries is 2.4% and in sediments of Outer Banks is 16.7%. Opaque minerals range from 10 to 85% of the total heavy mineral assemblage. Garnet and sillimanite are relatively more abundant in the eastern part than the western part in the area. Garnet more abundant in the northern part than the southern part, whereas sillimanite is more abundant in the southern part than the northern part, because the garnet source is in the northern part and one of the sillimanite source is in the southern part in the study area. The results of heavy mineral study indicate that the source of sediments is the Blue Ridge and Piedmont crystalline complex, and Coastal Plain formations. Some portions of sediments are transported from the Atlantic Ocean by the landward currents. They further indicate that the sediments of the Atlantic coast in the study area are transported mainly from the northern part to southern part by longshore littoral currents, and some portions of sediments are transported from the southern part to the northern part by the Gulf Stream.

  • The Cretaceous granite, andesite and sedimentary rocks are widely distributed in the northern Pusan area. The present study investigates mineralogical and geochemical charateristics of residual and cultivated soils derived from these rocks. The soils of granite area contain a large amount of quartz relative to clay minerals, whereas the soils of the andesite area contain more clay minerals than quartz. Clay minerals consist mainly of kaolin minerals illite hydroxy interlayered vermiculite interstratified mica/vermiculite and chlorite. Kaolin minerals are abundant in paddy soils while illite is abundant in less weathered soils. Si and K are major elements in the soils of granite area while Fe and Al in the soils of andesite area. In all the soils Ca, Mg and Na were generally depleted in comparison to those in parent rocks. Analysis data of trace element show that the enrichment pattern in soils depends on parent rock type with high oncentration of some elements over 100 ppm: Ba and Rb in granite area Zn, Bn, and V in andesite area, and Ba and V in sedimentary rock. In granite area, Rb and Th were greatly enriched in soil than in parent rocks. However, Cr, Ni and Sr commonly decrease, whereas Pb increases in all the soils. Exchangeable cation capacity(CEC) is relatively high in the soils of andesite are including abundant clay minerals. Collective evidences prove that the mineralogical and chemical compositions of soils are strongly dependent on the parent rock type. The mineralogy and chemistry of long cultivated soils are not significantly different from those of residual soils.

  • The reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organic compounds by soil minerals in soil and groundwater were carried out in this study. FeS, green rust, and magnetite were chosen as the representative soil minerals which were capable of degrading chlorinated compound in soil system. FeS was the most effective reductant in degradation of carbon tetrachloride. The reductive degradation of CT and 1,1,1-TCA by FeS was much faster than that of 1,2-DCB and 2,4-DCP. The reactivity of FeS was effectively improved by the addition of trace metals. The addition of Co to FeS suspension enhanced the reaction rate of 1,2-DCB by a factor of 46 compared to that by FeS without Co.

  • Microgram quantities of thallirum in meteorites, rocks, minerals, alloys and biological samples have been analyzed by rapid neutron activation analysis. A l0-minute radiochemical separation procedure coupled with a gas-flow proportional detector for 4.2-minute half life measurement and a gamma or beta scintillation detector placed in close proximity to the sample permitted detection of the 4.2-min Tl206. Samples were irradiated for 10-minutes at a thermal neutron flux of approximately $0.95{\times}10^{11}$ neutron-$cm^{-2}-sec^{-1}.$ The low limits of detection was about $10^{-7}$ gm of thallium.

  • Nutritional adequacy of growing Thoroughbred horses raised in an alternate feeding system - grazing during late spring through late fall and stable feeding for the rest of seasons - was assessed by determining vitamin E and trace mineral levels in the serum and blood chemistry related to nutrition and health. During the stable feeding in winter and early spring, 50 growing female horses were fed concentrates (1.4% of their body weight), grass hay (0.62%) and alfalfa hay (0.37%). For the grazing period, the same horses were fed supplementary concentrates (1.1%) during late spring through early summer, and concentrates (1.1%) and alfalfa hay (0.5%) during late summer through late fall. Blood samples were collected before grazing in early spring, and during grazing in early summer through late fall. Serum vitamin E, BUN, GTP, total bilirubin and direct bilirubin levels were increased (P<0.01) by grazing compared to those measured before the initiation of grazing. Horses had lower (P<0.01) serum Fe contents in early summer than in late fall or in time of stable feeding. Stable feeding increased (P<0.01) serum Cu content compared to grazing in both early summer and late fall. In late fall, serum Zn level increased (P<0.01) compared to that found in the other seasons. Blood glucose and creatinine levels decreased (P<0.01) after grazing. Results indicate that supplementations of some minerals and vitamin E are not always necessary in diets for growing horses and should be done after careful evaluation of diets with regard to concentrations and biological availability of minerals.

  • The experiment was undertaken to study the effect of subclinical mastitis on the biochemical parameters of milk in crossbred (Sahiwal $\times$ Jersey) cows. Subclincial mastitis was judged using California Mastitis Test and graded on a scale of 0 to 2. Twenty six milk samples of each grade were subjected to somatic cell count. Separated milk whey was analysed for total protein, immunoglobulin and trace mineral content. Results indicate linear increases in somatic cell count, total protein and immunoglobulin concentrations in milk with increase in grade of subclinical mastitis. However, copper, zinc, manganese and iron concentration in milk was not affected by grade of mastitis.

  • Minerals are individual of the components of foods and are not produced in the body but essential for best possible health. Several essential metals are vital for the appropriate performance of various enzymes, transcriptional factors and proteins that are essential in various biochemical paths. Metals like zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and manganese (Mn) are cofactors of hundreds of enzymes. Zn is involved in the synthesis and secretion of insulin from the pancreatic ${\beta}-cells$. Chromium (Cr) increases the insulin receptors activity on target tissues, mainly in muscle cells. Insulin hormone is required to maintain the blood glucose amount in normal range. Continual increase of blood serum glucose level leads to marked chronic hyperglycemia or diabetes mellitus. Deficiency of insulin or its resistance, blood glucose level exceeds the upper limit of the common range of 126 mg/dl. Poor glucose control and diabetes changes the levels of essential trace elements such as Zn, Mg, Mn, Cr, iron etc. by rising urinary excretion and their related decrease in the blood. The aim of this article to discusses the important roles of essential trace elements in particular perspective of type 2 diabetes.

  • The first Mg-skarn minerals are found from magnetite ore deposits of the Janggun mine, Korea. The skarn minerals are composed of mostly chondrodite, olivine, chlorite, serpentine, phlogophite, talc, apatite, magnesite, dolomite, siderite and trace amount of clinopyroxene, amphibole, garnet, wollastonite associated with magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. The skarn zone is developed in the magnetite deposits at the contact of the Mg-rich Janggun Limestone Formation and the Chunyang granite. The chondrodites are columnar and radial shapes and some of them show twins. The chemical compositions of twinning-type chondrodites have high FeO (4.63 to 5.6 wt%), MnO (0.26 to 0.46 wt%) and low MgO (55.02 to 56.18 wt%) relative to the radial-type chondrodites. Twinning in chondrodite has been formed in close relation to substitution between Mg and Fe + Mn in humite solid solution. Temperature, $-logfo_2$ and $X_{CO2}$ during the skarn stage of magnetite deposits from the Janggun mine range from 395 to $430^{\circ}C$, from 30.5 to 31.2 atm and from 0.06 to 0.09, respectively.
