Background: Ginseng is a semishade perennial plant cultivated in sloping, sun-shaded areas in Korea. Recently, owing to air-environmental stress and various fungal diseases, greenhouse cultivation has been suggested as an alternative. However, the optimal light transmission rate (LTR) in the greenhouse has not been established. Methods: The effect of LTR on photosynthesis rate, growth, and ginsenoside content of ginseng was examined by growing ginseng at the greenhouse under 6%, 9%, 13%, and 17% of LTR. Results: The light-saturated net photosynthesis rate ($A_{sat}$) and stomatal conductance ($g_{s}$) of ginseng increased until the LTR reached 17% in the early stage of growth, whereas they dropped sharply owing to excessive leaf chlorosis at 17% LTR during the hottest summer period in August. Overall, 6-17% of LTR had no effect on the aerial part of plant length or diameter, whereas 17% and 13% of LRT induced the largest leaf area and the highest root weight, respectively. The total ginsenoside content of the ginseng leaves increased as the LTR increased, and the overall content of protopanaxatriol line ginsenosides was higher than that of protopanaxadiol line ginsenosides. The ginsenoside content of the ginseng roots also increased as the LTR increased, and the total ginsenoside content of ginseng grown at 17% LTR increased by 49.7% and 68.3% more than the ginseng grown at 6% LTR in August and final harvest, respectively. Conclusion: These results indicate that 13-17% of LTR should be recommended for greenhouse cultivation of ginseng.

In this paper, the optimal position of optical phase conjugator(OPC) excellently compensating distorted WDM channels with initial frequency chirp due to both chromatic dispersion and self phase modulation(SPM) is numerically investigated. Highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) is used as a nonlinear medium of OPC in order to widely compensate WDM signal band. It is confirmed that if the OPC position was shifted from mid-way of total transmission length dependence on the initial frequency chirp as well as modulation format and fiber dispersion coefficient, it is possible to cancel the performance degradation owing to the initial frequency chirp. Using proposed configuration, it is possible to remove all in-line dispersion compensator, reducing span losses and system costs in the long-haul broadband WDM systems.

The Pohang Neutron Facility based on an electron linac was constructed in order to construct the infrastructure for nuclear data production in Korea. It consists of a 100-MeV electron linac, a water-cooled Ta target, and an 11-m time-of-flight path. We measured the time-of-flight path length, the neutron energy spectra for different water levels inside the moderator, and the neutron total cross sections of polyethylene and copper by the transmission method.

An energy-efficient multi-hop scheme based on cooperative MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) technique is proposed for wireless sensor networks, taking into consideration the modulation constellation size, transmission distance, and extra training overhead requirement. The scheme saves energy by selecting the hop length. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, a detailed analysis of the energy and delay efficiencies in the proposed scheme compared with the equidistance scheme is presented. Results from numerical experiments indicate that by use of the proposed scheme significant savings in terms of total energy cousumption can be achieved.
To investigate the movement of sperm head and the role of sperm neck in forward sperm motility in the Korean striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius coreae, the morphological characteristics of the cauda epididymal spermatozoa were examined by light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Spermatozoa of A. agrarius coreae were characterized by the conspicuous shape of the acrosome and the long tail compared with those of other rodents. Total length of the sperm was $133\mu{m}$. The sperm head had a curved falciform shape. The head was 8.0${\mu}$m in length, and about 4.0 ${\mu}$m in width. The shape of acrosome had an openerlike form. The sperm tail (125 ${\mu}$m) consisted of four major segments: neck (0.5 ${\mu}$m), middle piece (29.5 ${\mu}$m), and principal piece plus the end piece (95 ${\mu}$m). The outer dense fibers were arranged in a horseshoe fashion, and No. 1, 5, 6, and 9 of the outer dense fibers were larger than the others. The mitochondrial bundles of middle piece were composed of a pair of arms, which surrounded the axone of the middle piece by the 45 0 angled helical structure. The total number of mitochondrial gyres was 188. In particular, the microfilament structures existed in plasma membrane of the sperm, which was adjacent to the acrosomal region on the nuclear membrane. The segmented columns were surrounded by microfilament structures, and the microfilament bundles were adjacent to the outer membrane of the first mitochondria of middle piece. This study presents for the first time the existence of microfilament structures within the plasma membrane of sperm which is located from the adjacent acrosome region to the connecting piece in sperm neck of Korean striped field mouse, Apodemus agrarius coreae. The present result suggests that the constriction and extension of microfilament in sperm neck as well as the wave-movement of sperm tail may play a role in the movement of sperm head.
This study was carried out to investigate the ultrastructural changes of spermatozoa obtained from 20 of 3-year-old male chum salmon(Oncorhynchus keta) collected and analysed in middle October in 1995. The ultrastructural changes of gonad of fingerlings were examined to describe the sex differentiation of this species. The results obtained in this study were as follows : In spermatozoa, the nucleus is dense and homogeneous. Two spheroidal mitochondria(about 350nm long) are situated in parallel between the nucleus and the axoneme. Spermatozoa mitochondria are assembled into an organized sheath surrounding the outer dense fibres and axoneme of the flagellar midpiece. The sheath flagellum is situated beneath the base of the sperm head. The primordial germ cells of 6.8~7.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size, which were buried under fibrous mesenchymal tissue between gut duct and notochord of larva with a total length of 2.4cm at 50 days after hatching. In juvenile of 10.5cm in total length at 70 days after hatching, the gonad was occupied by bundles of oogonia. The dense drumstick bodies(large arrows) are observed in the nuclei of the primordial gonad and surrounding tissue cells of fingerling at 70 days after hatching. The oval Barr bodies(asterisk) are observed in the nuclei of the primordial germ cells under the mitosis(2n). Note the large mitochondria, ribosomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasm. Accordingly, the fingerlings at 70 days after hatching are identified as the female(xx). In result, the gonadal sex differentiation begins from the 70 days after hatching in chum salmon.
An age-dependent aspect of resistance to Cryptosporidium muris (strain MCR) infection was monitored in Syrian golden hamsters. Mesocricetus auratus. at 1-, 5- and 10-week of age and in ICR mice, Mus musculus, at 3-, 12-, and 15-week of age orally inoculated with a single dose of $2{\times}10^6$ oocysts. respectively. The prepatent periods for both animals were similar, independent of age, but the patency was significantly longer in younger hamsters (P<0.001) and a long tendency in younger mice. Hamsters infected at 1-week of age excreted about 10 times higher oocysts than those at 5- and 10-week of age. However, the total oocyst output was similar among mice of different ages. There was a good correlation between the length of the patency and the total oocyst output in hamsters (R=0.9646), but not in mice (R=0.456l). The immunogenicity of the parasite to homologous challenge infections was very strong in hamsters and relatively strong in mice. These results indicate that acquired resistance to C. muris infection is age-related and the innate resistance is independent of age of hamsters, and that both innate and acquired resistance, on the contrary, are irrespective of age of mice.

Limitation of optical phase conjugation for implementation of wideband and long-haul WDM transmission system is symmetric distribution of optical power and local dispersion with respect to optical phase conjugator (OPC). This limitation forces OPC to place at midway of total transmission length. This paper shows that the limitation of optical phase conjugation is overcame by applying optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) into transmission links based in inline dispersion management (DM). Optimal NRD related with OPC position is decided by combination of precompensation and postcompensation. It is confirmed that optimal NRD depends on launch power of WDM channels and system performance criterion as well as OPC position. That is, in case of 1 dB eye opening penaty (EOP) as a performance criterion for WDM channels with 0 dBm launch power, it is confirmed that OPC is allowed to place at anywhere of 1000 km by applying best NRD related with exact OPC position into transmission links. And, it is confirmed that, under 3 dB EOP criterioin for WDM channels with 3 dBm launch power, OPC is allowed to place at 350~700 km by applying NRD between 100 ps/nm and 200 ps/nm into transmission links, though that NRD value is not best combination of precompensation and postcompensation.
In the case of arctic area long-distance natural gas transmission pipeline, it is necessary to construct capable facilities to maintain the gas pressure because the gas pressure is reduced according to the pipeline characteristics and route conditions. In order to maintain the proper NG pressure, it is necessary to secure economy considering the cost of main equipments of the compressor station, construction and operation cost when the compression ratio is shortened or increased by constructing the distance of the compressor station. Therefore, In this study, preliminary study on construction of arctic area long-distance transmission pipeline was reviewed and conduct conceptual design by constructing main equipments process that can reduce the construction cost of the compressor station in arctic area. In particular, in order to evaluate economic feasibility of the long-distance transmission pipeline in arctic area, the virtual area for Yakutsk~Aldan region(Russia) was supposed. The total pipeline length of the virtual is 533km, The scenarios for the location of the compressor station presented. The capacity estimated about the main equipments of the compressor station. As a result, the economic evaluation method reviewed which can minimize the construction cost of the compressor station.
This paper is contented with packet transmission scheduling problem for repeating all-to-all broadcasts in WDM optical passive-star networks in which there are N nodes and k wavelengths. It is assumed that each node has one tunable transmitter and one fixed-tuned receiver, and each transmitter can tune to k different wavelengths. The tuning delay represents the time taken for a transmitter to tune from one wavelength to another and represented as ${\delta}$(>0) in units of packet durations. We define all-to-all broadcast as the one where every node transmits packets to all the other nodes except itself. So, there are in total N(N-1) packets to be transmitted for an all-to-all broadcast. The optimal transmission scheduling is to schedule In such a way that all packets can be transmitted within the minimum time. In this paper, we propose the condition for optimal transmission schedules and present an optimal transmission scheduling algorithm for arbitrary values of N, k, and ${\delta}$ The cycle length of the optimal schedules is $max{[\frac{N}{k}](M-1)$, $k{\delta}+N-1$}.
