  • Removal of total nitrogen (T-N) and total phosphorus (T-P) was evaluated in a DEPHANOX process by adding Al(III) to the separator to maintain T-P in the final effluent below 0.2 mg/L. pH in each reactor was maintained 7~8 after addition of Al(III) to the levels of 5, 10, 15 mg/L. The removal efficiency of COD and T-N decreased at higher Al(III) dose, but T-P removal efficiency increased from 76.28 to 84.02, 94.66% at Al(III) dose of 5, 10, 15 mg/L, respectively. T-P in effluent showed 0.17 mg/L at Al(III) dose of 15 mg/L. Minimum 15 mg/L of Al(III) was required to maitain T-P below 0.2 mg/L in the final effluent.

  • A 1,000 ㎥/d DAF(dissolved air flotation) pilot plant was installed to evaluate the performance of the floating process using the Nakdong River. Efficiency of various DAF operations under different conditions, such as hydraulic loading rate, coagulant concentration was evaluated in the current research. The operation conditions were evaluated, based on the removal or turbidity, TOC(total organic carbon), THMFP(trihalomethane formation potential), Mn(manganese), and Al(aluminum). Also, particle size analysis of treated water by DAF was performed to examine the characteristics of particles existing in the treated water. The turbidity removal was higher than 90%, and it could be operated at 0.5 NTU or less, which is suitable for the drinking water quality standard. Turbidity, TOC, and THMFP resulted in stable water quality when replacing the coagulant from alum to PAC(poly aluminum chloride). A 100% removal of Chl-a was recorded during the summer period of the DAF operations. Mn removal was not as effective as where the removal did not satisfy the water quality standards for the majority of the operation period. Hydraulic loading of 10 m/h, and coagulant concentrations of 40 mg/L was determined to be the optimal operating conditions for turbidity and TOC removal. When the coagulant concentration increases, the Al concentration of the DAF treated water also increases, so coagulant injection control is required according to the raw water quality. Particle size distribution results indicated that particles larger than 25 ㎛ showed higher removal rates than smaller particles. The total particel count in the treated water was 2,214.7 counts/ml under the operation conditions of 10 m/h of hydraulic loading rate and coagulant concentrations of 60 mg/L.

  • Abstract Spirulina platensis was grown in SWlUe waste to reduce inorganic compowlds and simultaneously produce feed resources. Spirulina platensis prefers nitrogenous compounds in Ibe order: $NH_4^{+}-N>NO_3^{-}-N>simple-N$ such as urea and simple amino acids. It even consumes $NH_4^{+}-N$ first when urea or nitrate are present. Therefore, the content of residual $NH_4^{+}-N$ in Spimlina platensis cultures can be determined by the relative extent of the following processes: (i) algal uptake and assimilation; (ii) ammonia stripping; and (iii) decomposition of urea to NH;-N by urease-positive bacteria. The removal rates of total nitrogen ffild total phosphorus were estimated as an indicator of the treatment effIciency. It was found that Spirulina platensis was able to reduce 70-93% of $P_4^{3-}-P$, 67-93% of inorganic nitrogen, 80-90% of COD, and 37-56% of organic nitrogen in various concentrations of swine waste over 12 days of batch cultivation. The removal of inorganic compounds from swine waste was mainly used for cell growth, however, the organic nitrogen removal was not related to cell growlb. A maximum cell density of 1.52 dry-g/l was maintained with a dilution rate of 0.2l/day in continuous cultivation by adding 30% swine waste. The nitrogen and phosphorus removal rates were correlated to the dilution rates. Based on the amino acid profile, the quality of the proteins in the Spirulina platensis grown in the waste was the same as that in a clean culture.ulture.

  • This study was carried out to derive the removal characteristics of target materials(DOC and turbidity) during the coagulation process after the injection of coagulants(PACl and FeCl3). Used apparatus were a jar test and a pilot plant. A great portion of DOC among the total removed DOC was achieved at the slow mixing process among the coagulation process. The ranges of removed DOC and optimum pH for each coagulant were 0.45~1.47mg/l and 6.0~6.5 by PACl, and 0.97~2.61mg/l. and 5.0~5.5 by FeCl3, respectively. Both of coagulants showed little increase of DOC removal above coagulant dosage 20mg/l Molecular weight distribution(MWD) of removed DOC was measured by get filtration(GF) technique. The MWD variation by gel filtrationin(GF) for removed DOC in the coagulation process were as follows; for raw water, the percentages of each MWD for total area were < MW 6,500 25.5%, MW 6,500~66,000 67.1%, and > MW 66,000 7.4%. For the same coagulant dosage(12mg/l), the percentages of each MWD for total area by PACl were < MW 6,500 20.5%, MW 6,500~66,000 48.7%, and > MW 66,000 9.1%, and those of FeCl3 were MW 66,000 18.2%. For each coagulant, the removal percentage of MW 6,500~66,000 occurred a little, but at a part of

  • This study was performed to evaluate the pollutants removal characteristics of two types of RBFs(Riverbank filtration, Riverbed filtration) intake facilities installed in Nakdong River and in Hwang River respectively. The capacity of each RBF is 45,000 m3/d for riverbank filtration intake facility and 3,500 m3/d for riverbed filtration intake facility. According to data collected in the riverbank filtration site, removal rate of each pollutant was about BOD(Biochemical Oxygen Demand) 52%, TOC(Total Organic Carbon) 57%, SS(Suspended Solids) 44%, Total coliforms 99% correspondingly. Furthermore, Microcystins(-LR,-YR,-RR) were not found in riverbank filtered water compared to surface water in Nakdong River. DOC(Dissolved Organic Carbon) and Humics which are precursors of disinfection byproduct were also reported to be removed about 59% for DOC, 65% for Humics. Based on data analysis in riverbed filtration site in Hwang River, removal rate of each contaminant reaches to BOD 33.3%, TOC 38.5%, SS 38.9%, DOC 22.2%, UV254 21.2%, Total coliforms 73.8% respectively. Additionally, microplastics were also inspected that there was no obvious removal rate in riverbed filtered water compared to surface water in Hwang River.

  • The use of electron beam irradiation was investigated to disinfect total coliforms in the secondary sewage treatment effluent. Unchlorinated secondary effluent was irradiated at different dose of 0.2~1.0 kGy by 1 MeV, ELV-4 Model electron beam accelerator. It is interesting to note that a 100 % reduction in total coliforms and total colonies were achieved until a dose of approximately 0.8 kGy. Even at low dose of 0.2 kGy, the total coliforms and total colonies were successfully inactivated to the level of satisfying the new effluent discharge guideline. Besides disinfection of total coliforms, approximately a 50% removal in biochemical oxygen demand was pronounced at a dose of 0.2 kGy. More than 20 % removal in suspended solids and turbidity was also observed at a dose of 1.0 kGy. The application of electron beam irradiation appeared to be one of options to reuse sewage treatment effluent as agricultural or industrial water.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the operating characteristics of SMMIAR process for biological nitrogenㆍphosphorus removal. SMMIAR was operated at HLR(Hydraulic loading rate) of 39.6, 52.8, 63.4 and 79.2 $\ell$/$m^2$/d respectively and the operating parameters such as intermittent aeration time ratio of aerobic/anoxic, DO and microorganism concentration were changed to confirm the optimum operating condition. The concentrations of the wastewater BOD, TN(Total nitrogen) and TP(Total phosphorus) were 150, 30 and 7.5mg/$\ell$ respectively. Achieving better removal efficiencies of BOD, TN and TP up to 90, 85.4 and 95.4% respectively, we must keep in operation condition of SMMIAR by 0.75 of time ratio of aerobic/anoxic and by minimum 45 minutes of oxic period simultaneously.

  • This study represents that a removal efficiency of organic matters in wastewater is activated by a sludge process using new mixed microbial population. In case of mixed microorganisms, removal rates of suspended solid (SS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were over 90 percent under experimental condition, and removal efficiency of organic matters, sludge density index (SDI) and capillary suction time (CST) in mixed population were higher than that in not-mixed microorganism, while total kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total phosphorus (T-P) which indicate a degree of eutrophication were removed easily in both case. From these results, we may propose that an application of the mixed microbial population is useful to treat domestic wastewater including a great deal of organic matters.

  • This study deals with the removal of mercury species using a packed-bed column with spherical aminated chitosan material. These adsorbents revealed a high adsorption capacity for mercury species. Experiments with feed solutions of 10 ppm Hg dissolved in distilled water showed an excellent removal with a sharp increase of the filter effluent concentration after a total throughput of 900 bed volumes of feed water. Up to $95\%$ desorption was reached by using 3 bed volumes of 0.01 N EDTA solution. EDTA could be recovered by means of sulfuric acid with about $75\%$ efficiency. Almost the same results were obtained in repeated sorption and desorption experiments at identical conditions. The experiments demonstrated that the sorbents possessed practically no sorption capacity for alkaline earth ions ($Ca^{2+}\;and\;Mg^{2+}$). Their influence on the sorption of mercury was negligible. In experiments with spiked tap water of the Karlsruhe Research Centre and a feed mercury concentration of 0.01 mg/l, the breakthrough of Hg was observed only after a total throughput of about 6,000 bed volumes of feed water.
