DOS and NaCl aerosol particles were used to determine collection efficiencies of a 2-stage electrostatic wet scrubber with respect to particle size. The DOS and NaCl aerosols have geometric mean diameters of 0.1-3.0 urn, geometric standard deviations of $1.1{\sim}1.8$ and total number concentrations of $450{\sim}2,400\;particles/cm^3$. The tested operating variables for the electrostatic wet scrubber included air velocity and water injection rate. It was shown from the experimental results that particle collection efficiencies increased in the submicron particle size range when different polarities were applied on the water nozzle and corona wire, respectively. This increase in the collection efficiency is attributed to strong electrostatic attraction between the negative water droplets and positive submicron particles. The collection efficiencies also increased when water injection rate was increased or air velocity was decreased. Meanwhile, the pressure drop across the wet scrubber decreased by 90% compared with the existing mechanical wet scrubber. Finally, ammonia gas was used to determine gas removal efficiencies. It was observed that the gas removal efficiencies increased when the air velocity was decreased or the water injection rate was increased.

A novel particle removal system for air handling unit (AHU) of subway station was evaluated experimentally. The novel system was designed in order to minimize the maintenance cost by applying axial-flow cyclones. The system consists of multiple cyclone units and dust trap. Based on our previous numerical study, it was found to be effective for removal $1\sim10{\mu}m$ sized dust particles. In this study, we manufactured the mock-up model and evaluated the model experimentally. Liquid and solid test particles were generated for evaluating collection efficiency of the system and the pressure drop was monitored. The collection efficiency was varied from 41.2% to 85.9% with increasing the sizes of particle from 1 to $6.5{\mu}m$ by particle count ratio of inlet and outlet. The pressure drop was maintained constant less than $20mmH_2O$. In addition, the collection efficiency was estimated by total mass for solid test particles. It was found that the collection efficiency was 65.7% by particle mass ratio of inlet and outlet. It shows that present system can replace current pre-filters used in subway HVAC system for removing particulate matters with minimal operational cost.
To minimize the time ordinarily spent in mono filter cigarette design, we studied the relationship between major seven independant variables ; filament(X1) and total denier(X2), porosity of the aller plug wrap(X3), filter length(X4), Porosity of the tip paper(X5) and cigarette paper(X6) and net weight of the reference cut tobacco(X7). Ninty trial numbers were obtained as a results of using rotatable central composite design and it is analyzed by the multiple regression analysis with stepwise in SAS/pc under restricted conditions. That is, UPD (Y1) = 82.96 - 3.80X1 + 2.50X2 - 3.29X3 - 3.15X5 - 0.83X22 + 1.88X5X6 - 1.38 X5X7(R2: 0.63), EPD(Y2) : 120.91 - 5.70X1 + 3.60X2 + 4.23X4 - 0.93X6 + 4.06X7 (R2=0.84), TVR(Y3) = 49.70 - 0.78X1 + 3.60X3 + 2.00X4 + 4.20X5 - 0.93X6 + 2.64X7 - 1.07X1X2 + 1.0IX1 X3 + 1.05X2X6 + 0.45X22 - 0.64X42 + 1.29X4X6 - 0.97X4X7 - 1.28X5X6 + 1.53X5X7 + 1.39X6X7(R2=0.65), and EVR(Y4) : 3.24-0.21X3-0.20X4 -0.24X5+0.67X6+0.26X4X7 (R2=0.55), where EPD : encapsulated pressure drop, VPD : unencapsulated pressure drop, TVR ; tip ventilation rate, and En : envelope ventilation rate. All variables in the model are significant at the 0.05 level.
Aerial application using an unmanned agricultural helicopter became necessary for both labor saving and timely spraying. In the previous paper, a rotor system was developed and lift capability was evaluated. The experimental results were compared with simulated predictions using the CFD-ACE program. From the simulation, the relative velocity on the top surface of the blade airfoil increased, resulting in the pressure drop. The CFD analyses were revealed that a drag resistance on the leading edge of the airfoil, a wake at the trailing edge, and a positive pressure underneath the bottom surface were observed. As the results of the simulation, total lifts of 56.8, 74.4 and $95.0kg_f$ were obtained at the 6, 8 and $10^{\circ}$ of AAT (angle of attack), respectively. The simulation results agreed reasonably up to $10^{\circ}$ of AAT. However, at a greater AAT $(<12^{\circ})$ the simulated total lift continuously increased to $105kg_f$, comparing with a decreasing experimental total lift due to the lack of engine power. At a stiff angle of $18^{\circ}$ AAT, a wake was observed at the trailing edge of the airfoil. A rated operating condition determined from the previous paper was also verified through the simulation.
Holdup characteristics of small bubbles were investigated in a viscous slurry bubble column. The phase holdup of small bubbles was obtained from the knowledge of total bubble(gas) holdup and large bubble holdup, which were measured by mean of static pressure drop method and dual resistivity probe method, respectively. Effects of gas velocity, viscosity of continuous liquid phase and solid fraction in the slurry phase on the small bubble holdup as well as holdups of total bubble(gas) and large bubble in a viscous slurry bubble column. The small bubble holdup increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with increasing liquid viscosity or solid fraction in the slurry phase. In addition the fraction of small bubble in the total bubble(gas) holdup increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with increasing liquid viscosity or solid fraction in the slurry phase. It was revealed that the rising velocity of large bubble did not related to the holdup of small bubble in a viscous slurry bubble column.
The beneficial aspects of applying emulsion fuels to combustion systems may be due to the changes of fuel properties which lead to the enhanced atomization characteristics. The spray characteristics of water/oil emulsified fuel injected from the pressure-swirl(simplex) atomizer using for oil burner were investigated. Four different water contents from 10 to 40 % by volume at 10% increment were prepared by mixing with the different contents of surfactants. Total amount of surfactant used was varied from 1 to 3 % by volume. This study demonstrates the influence of water and surfactant contents of emulsified fuel, injection pressure on the spray characteristics, i.e. Sauter mean diameter(SMD) and spray angle. The drop size distribution of the emulsified fuel spray was measured with a Malvem particle sizer. In order to measure the spray angle, the digital image processing was employed by capturing multiple images of the spray with 3-CCD digital video camera. It was evident that the addition of water and surfactant changes fuel properties which are the key parameters influencing the atomization of the spray. The increase in surfactant content results in the decrease of SMD and the increase in spray angle. The droplets decease with increase in injection pressure, but the influence of injection pressure in this experimental condition was less important than expected. The more viscous fuel with the increase of water content exhibits the larger droplets in the centerline of the spray, and the less viscous fuel in the outer edges of the spray. The increase in axial position from the nozzle causes the spray angle to decrease. The spray angle decreases with increase in water content. This is due to increase in viscosity with increase in water content.

Dynamic extinction of solid propellants subjected to rapid pressure drop was studied with the aid of energy equation of condensed phase and flame model in gas phase. It is found that the total residence time($\tau_\gamma$) which measures the residing time of fuel in the reaction zone may play a crucial role in determining the dynamic response of the combustuion to extinction. Residence time was modeled by various combinations of diffusion and chemocal kinetic time scale. Effect of pressure history coupled with chamber volume on the extinction response was also performed and was found that dynamic extinction is more susceptible in a confined chamber than in open geometry. And, dynamic extinction was revealed to be affected profoundly by diffysion time scale rather than chemical kinetic time scale.

For Super-Cavitating Underwater Vehicles (SCUV), the numerical analyses and experiments in a large cavitation tunnel are carried out at relatively large Reynolds numbers. The numerical results agree well with experiments and the drag coefficient of SCUV is rarely changed by the Reynolds number. As the cavitation number is decreased, the cavity occurs and grows, the cavitator drag decreases and the body drag is affected by the degree of covering the body with the cavity. The tunnel effects, i.e. the blockage and the friction pressure drop of the tunnel, on the drag and the cavitation of SCUV are examined from the numerical results in between the tunnel and unbounded flows. In the tunnel, a minimum cavitation number exists and the drag of SCUV appears larger than that in unbounded flow. When the super-cavity covers the entire body, the friction drag almost disappears and the total drag of SCUV can be regarded as the pressure drag of cavitator.

In order to control indoor air quality and save energy, it is needed to install a suitable ventilation system equipped with heat exchanger for heat recovery The purpose of this research is to find the factors affecting the performance of paper heat exchanger for exhaust heat recovery, which can be applied directly to the conventional ventilation unit, air-purifier, and air-conditioning system. In this study, thermal performance and pressure loss of the paper heat exchanger are measured and compared at various operating conditions. The effectiveness of sensible, latent and total heat at the face velocity of 0.75 m/s are $77\%,\;47\%\;and\;57\%$ in the cooling condition and $77\%,\;59\%,\;and\;\%$ in the heating condition, respectively. The effectiveness for sensible heat is only affected by velocity. On the other hand, the effectiveness for latent heat is affected. by temperature and relative humidity.

Relatively low cycle performance of a conventional $CO_2$ system is partly due to significant increase in friction loss in the expansion process, since the pressure drop across the expansion device is considerably large compared to a conventional refrigeration cycle. To recover friction loss and increase refrigeration effect by providing isentropic expansion, a rotary vane type expander has been designed. Performance of the designed expander has been investigated by numerical simulation. With the pressure condition of 9 MPa/4.5 MPa and inlet temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, volumetric, isentropic, and mechanical efficiencies of the expander are calculated to be 58.1%, 101.1%, and 78.8%, respectively, resulting in total expander efficiency of 46.3%. With this expander, COP of a $CO_2$ refrigeration cycle is estimated to be improved by about 14%.
