Three female sheep were daily administered a pyrophosphate analogue, disodium 1-hydroxyethylidene-1, 1-bisphosphonate (HEBP) at the level of 4 mg/kg body weight. HEBP largely suppressed bone resorption, which was indicated by the reduction in plasma free hydroxyproline concentration and in calcium mobilization rate during the intravenous infusion of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA). Contrary to the suppression of bone resorption, plasma total-calcium, magnesium and phosphorus concentrations were not changed by HEBP administration. These results suggest that bone mineral crystals play a meaningless role on calcium, magnesium and phosphorus homeostasis in ruminants if they are fed adequate amounts of these minerals. Plasma magnesium and phosphorus concentrations were not significantly changed after feeding. However, plasma total-calcium was decreased after feeding in both periods and the reduction seemed to be remarkable in the HEBP-treated period. Infusion of EDTA more remarkably reduced plasma ionized calcium concentration in the HEBP-treated that in the untreated period and the recovery of ionized calcium was retarded by HEBP administration. These results suggest that calcium release from bone is necessary for maintenance of plasma calcium when animals rapidly lose calcium.

Abstract Over the last several decades, crop production in the United States increased largely due to the extensive use of animal waste and fertilizers as plant nutrient supplements, and pesticides for crops pests and weed control. Without the application of animal waste best management, the use of animal waste can result in nonpoint source pollution from agricultural land area. In order to increase nutrient levels and decrease contamination from agricultural lands, nonpoint source pollution is responsible for water quality degradation. Nonpoint source pollutants such as animal waste, ferilizers, and pesticides are transported primarily through runoff from agricultural areas. Nutrients, primarily nitrogen and phosphorus, can be a major water quality problem because they cause eutrophic algae growth. In 1985, it was presented that Watershed/Water Quality Monitoring for Evaluation BMP Effectiveness was implemented for Nomini Creek Watershed, located in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The watershed is predominantly agricultural and has an aerial extent of 1505 ha of land, with 43% under cropland, 54% under woodland, and 3% as homestead and roads. Rainfall data was collected at the watershed from raingages located at sites PNI through PN 7. Streams at stations QN I and QN2 were being measured with V-notch weirs. Water levels at the stream was measured using an FW-l Belfort (Friez FWl). The water quality monitoring system was designed to provide comprehensive assessment of the quality of storm runoff and baseflow as influenced by changes in landuse, agronomic, and cultural practices ill the watershed. As this study was concerned with the Nomini Creek Watershed, the separation of storm runoff and baseflow measured at QNI and QN2 was given by the master depletion curve method, and the loadings of baseflow and storm runoff for TN (Total Nitrogen) and TP (Total Phosphorus) were analyzed from 1987 through 1989. The results were studied for the best management practices to reduce contamination and loss of nutrients, (e.g., total nitrogen and total phosphorus) by nonpoint source pollution from agricultural lands.
The present study examined annual runoff loading of nitrogen and phosphorus in the paddy field from 1 May, 1997 to 30 April, 1998. In the investigated area, the amount of rainfall was 1,095.6 mm and 414.6 mm during cropping season and non-cropping season. The annual rainfall was 1,510.2 mm. The total amount of runoff water was 1,043.2 mm and 281.0mm during cropping season and non-cropping season, and the added total amount of runoff water during two seasons was 1,324.2 mm. The runoff loading of nutrients caused by runoff water was measured as follows. The total-N was 149.23 and $8.67kg\;ha^{-1}$ (total amount=$157.90kg^{-1}ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$), the ammonia-N 102.98 and $4.44kg\;ha^{-1}$ ($107.42kg^{-1}ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$), the nitrate-N 28.45 and $1.23kg\;ha^{-1}$ ($29.68kg^{-1}ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$), the total-P 4.16 and $0.38kg\;ha^{-1}$ ($4.54kg^{-1}ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$) during cropping and non-cropping season respectively. When the loss ratio was calculated based on amounts of chemical fertilizer, about 68.6% of nitrogen and 16.7% of phosphorus was lost by runoff from applied fertilizer amount.

This study evaluated the feasibility of recovering and recycling nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from livestock excreta as struvite ($MgNH_4PO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$) in South Korea. Our experimental results showed that struvite precipitation was a very effective way to recover N and P from livestock excreta. Moreover, our study demonstrated that struvite precipitates from livestock excreta (SPL) contain higher concentrations of N, P, and magnesium (Mg) as compared to compost and liquid manure from livestock excreta. In addition, although SPL contain high concentrations of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), they meet the fertilizer criteria for concentrations of heavy metals. In South Korea, SPL cannot currently be used as a fertilizer due to legal constraints. Legal permission for SPL use would offer greater choice in livestock excreta management. In conclusion, recovery and recycling of N and P from livestock excreta as struvite can be an effective tool for managing nutrients in livestock excreta.
A laboratory experiment was performed to investigate the phosphorus removal using the activated sludge-electrolysis reactor which consisted of A$^2$/O system and aluminium electrodes as cathode and anode. In this system, the phosphorus was removed by aluminium ion, which was eluted from aluminiumelectrodes by electrolysis. In the batch experiments, when the current densities were 0.026, 0.052 and 0.08 A/dm$^2$, the phosphorus removal efficiencies for synthetic sewage were 66.4, 86.4 and 98.7% respectively. These results showed that the phosphorus removal efficiency increased with the increase of the current density. When the current values were 13, 26 and 40 mA respectively, the amounts of Al$^{3+}$ eluted from electrodes according to Faraday's law were 0.049, 0.07 and 0.12 g and Al/P mole ratio were 1.1, 2.0 and 3.41. In the continuous experiments, As hydraulic retention time(HRT) increased, COD and total nitrogen(T-N) removal efficiencies for domestic sewage increased. The average phosphorus removal rates of the activated sludge-electrolysis system were 97, 91, 80 and 80% at the HRT of 48, 24, 18 and 12 hours, respectively. Especially, the phosphorus removal rate in the activated sludge system with aluminium electrodes was higher than that in the system without aluminium electrodes.
Biological phosphorus removal is accomplished by exposing PAO(phosphorus accumulating organisms) to anaerobic-aerobic conversion conditions. In the anaerobic condition, PAO synthesize PHB(polyhydroxybutyrate) and simultaneously hydrolysis of poly-p resulting phosphorus(Pi) release. In aerobic condition, PAO uptake phosphorus(Pi) more than they have released. In this study, cyanobacteria Synechococcus sp., which is known to be able to synthesize PHB like PAO, was exposed to anaerobic-aerobic conversion. If Synechococcus sp. can remove excess phosphorus by the same mechanism as PAO, synergistic effects can occur through photosynthesis. Moreover, Synechococcus sp. is known to be capable of synthesizing PHB using inorganic carbon as well as organic carbon, so even if the available capacity of organic carbon decreases, it was expected to show stable phosphorus removal efficiency. In 6 hours of anaerobic condition, phosphorus release occurred in both inorganic and organic carbon conditions but SPRR(specific phosphorus release rate) of both conditions was 10 mg-P/g-MLSS/day, which was significantly lower than that of PAO. When converting to aerobic conditions, SPUR(specific phosphorus uptake rate) was about 9 mg-P/g-MLSS/day in both conditions, showing a higher uptake rate than the control condition showing SPUR of 6.4 mg-P/g-MLSS/day. But there was no difference in terms of the total amount of removal. According to this study, at least, it seems to be inappropriate to apply Synechococcus sp. to luxury uptake process for phosphorus removal.

BACKGROUND: Constructed wetlands are low-cost alternatives for treating domestics sewage. However, previous study has reported that the removal of phosphorus in constructed wetlands was limited. Therefore, a new alternative was needed to extend the life of the constructed wetlands. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of total phosphorus removal by oyster shell on longevity of constructed wetlands for treating domestic sewage. METHODS AND RESULTS: The changes of total phosphorus concentration and treatment efficiency in two constructed wetlands (CWs) classified as system A (coarse sand 100%) and system B (coarse sand 90%+oyster shell 10%) were investigated for 6 years. The actual saturation time of total phosphorus in the systems A and B was estimated to be longer than that of theoretical saturation by adsorption isotherm experiment. In particular, the saturation pattern of phosphorus in system A was maintained at a certain concentration level in the initial stage of operation, and finally saturation was reached as the saturation gradually progressed from the breaking point. In system B, the saturation period of phosphorus was prolonged as compared with system A due to the addition of oyster shells. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that the longevity of the constructed wetlands can be extended due to the phosphorus saturation by adding the oyster shells to the coarse sands in constructed wetlands.
In this study, effect of heat treatment on phytic acid, phosphorus compounds, and minerals in Korean soybean varieties was investigated. Results were summarized as follwo: 1. In the soybeans tested, protein content ranged from 34.6 to 44.6%, lipid content from 15.4 to 20.2%, fiber content from 4.8 to 6.1% and ash content from 4.5 to 5.9%. 2. Content range for phytic acid in soybean varieties was 1,300 to 1,542mg/100g and its mean was measured 1,392mg/100g. With increasing of the temperature, the phytic acid tends to be destroyed, especially at 6$0^{\circ}C$ the loss was averaged about 20%. 3. Total phosphorus content in soybean ranged from 607 to 681mg/100g and the decending order of phosphors content in soybean varieties was Millyang > Hwangkeum > Kwangkyo > Danyoup > Hill > Jangyoup. It was also destroyed with increasing temperature. 4. Phytate phosphorus content range in soybean was from 315.6 to 318.0mg/100g and decreased with increasing temperature. 5. Inorganic phosphorus content ranged from 95.5 to 110.0mg/100g and it was increased by temperature rising among soybean varieties. 6. Phytate phosphorus to total phosphorus ratio ranged from 5.2 to 5.7 and decreased by temperature rising. 7. The content of nonphytate phosphorus varied widely between soybean varieties and decreased with temperature increase. 8. The content of calcium, iron and magnesium ranged from 15.7 to 25.7mg/100g from 8.8 to 16.8mg/100g and from 121.9 to 143.6mg/100g respectively. The content of Mg showed small difference among soybean varieties. The change of mineral content with heat treatment in soybean did not give any meaningful change mineral content.
This study aims to evaluate the effect of capping materials on blocking pollutant elution from contaminated sediment to water body. Experiments were carried out under conditions in which the elution rate was intensified artificially using compost with high concentration of organic compound and nutrient salts instead of sediments. Activated carbon (AC), modified activated carbon (MAC), P. putida immobilized activated carbon (PBAC) and effective microorganisms immobilized activated carbon (EBAC) were used as capping materials. Zeolite (ZT) and two kinds of commercially available microorganisms immobilized zeolite products (ZC, ZN) were used for comparison experiment. The elution rate of organic compound, nitrogen and phosphorus were compared with that of control experiment. The experiments were conducted for 56 days. Concentrations of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were measured to use the comparison of release rate of organic compound, nitrogen and phosphorus. From the experimental results, AC based materials showed better performance to block the elution of organic compound and nitrogen than ZT based materials. Although ZT based materials were more effective than AC and PBAC to block phosphorus, MAC and EBAC showed the best performance of phosphorus elution blocking among the all candidate materials. In conclusion, EBAC is considered as the most effective capping materials, because organic compound, nitrogen and phosphorus will be degraded continuously by EM in the long term.
Soybean plants inoculated with Bradyrhizobium japonicum MN 110 were supplied with nutrient solutions containing 1.0, 0.25 and 0.5.nM-P to characterize the effect of externaI-P supply on the phosphorus status of nodules and on the P-uptake system of isolated bacteroids from nodules. After 48 days of growth, whole plant dry mass in the 0.25 and 0.05 mM-P treatments decreased significantly. The Pi concentrations in nodules were 4.1, 2.5 and 2.0 mM for 1.0, 0.25 and 0.05 mM-P treatments, respectively. The external-P supply did not significantly affect the distribution of phosphorus among inorganic phosphate(Pi), soluble organic-phosphorus(SOP) and insoluble organic-phosphorus(TOP) fractions in nodules. The Pi concentrations in young leaves of 0.25 and 0.05 mM-P plants were 33% and 20% , respectively, of those in young leaves of 1.0 mM-P plants and Pi concentrations in old leaves were only 16% and 7%, respectively, of those in old leaves of 1.0 mM-P plants. Phosphorus deficiency decreased the percentage of total leaf phosphorus in the Pi fraction and increased the percentage of total leaf phosphorus in the IOP fraction. The bacteroid number ranged from 0.87 to $1.30{\times}10^{11}$ Per GFW nodule regardless of external-P supply to the host Plants and Plant age, The P-uptake rates were the same (15-16 pmoles /min./$10^8$ bacteroids) for the bacteroids isolated from nodules of 1.0 mM-P and 0.05 mM-P plants. These results indicate that Pi concentrations in nodules of phosphorus-deficient plants are sufficient for proliferation of bacteroids and that the P-uptake system of bacteroids is in a repressed state even when host plant growth is severely restricted by phosphorus-deficiency stress.
