Rapeseed cake was extracted with 80% ethanol and then fractionated with $H_2O$ (fraction I) as well as with 30% (II), 50% (III), 70% (IV), and 100% ethanol (V). Total phenolic content (TPC), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, ferric-reducing antioxidant potential, and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity were in the order of fractions II > III > I > IV > V. The three fractions with high antioxidant activities and TPC (I, II, and III) were pooled and hydrolyzed by NaOH solution, resulting in 18.97 mg sinapic acid/g hydrolyzed extract and 21- and 2.2-fold increases in TPC and DPPH radical scavenging activity, respectively. Hydrolyzed rapeseed cake extracts (200, 500, and 1,000 ppm) and catechin (200 ppm) as a comparison were added to 10% fish oil-in-water emulsion, and their effects on oxidative stability were investigated by measuring hydroperoxide values (PV) during refrigerated storage. PVs were significantly lower in the emulsions with added hydrolyzed extract as compared to the control (p<0.05) and significantly decreased with increasing extract concentration (p<0.05) over a period of 29 days. The emulsion added with hydrolyzed extract showed higher PV than that added catechin at the same concentration (200 ppm) during 13-22 days (p<0.05), but after then, the PV was not significantly different (p>0.05). This study indicates that hydrolyzed rapeseed cake extract rich in sinapic acid may inhibit oxidation in a fish oil-in-water emulsion in a concentration-dependent manner.
Three methods for VOCs emissions control in indoor air are reduction at the source, ventilation between indoor and outdoor, and removal. The best alternative should be to replace highly emitting sources with sources having low emissions, but the pertinent information on VOCs is not always available from manufactures. Other ways of improving indoor air quality are needed. It is to increase the outside fresh-air flow to dilute the pollutants, but this method would generally provide only a dilution effect without destruction in residence. An ideal alternative to existing technologies would be a chemical oxidation process able to treat large volumes of slightly contaminated air at normal temperature without additional oxidant such as ozone generator and ion generator. Photocatalytic oxidation(PCO) represents such a process. It is characterized by a surface reaction assisted by light radiation inducing the formation of superoxide, hydroperoxide anions, or hydroxyl radicals, which are powerful oxidants. In comparison with other VOCs removal methods, PCO offers several advantages. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibilities for photocatalytic purification of slightly contaminated indoor air by using visible light such as flurescent visible light(FVL). In this study, a PCO of relatively concentrated benzene using common FVL lamps was investigated as batch type and total volatile organic compounds(TVOCs) using a common FVL lamp and penetrated sun light over window. The results of this study shown the possibility of TiO$_2$ photocatalyst application in the area of indoor air quality control.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and hepatocyte protective effects of guava (Psidium guajava L.) leaves cultivated in Korea. The contents of the total polyphenol of the extract was 271.57 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g residue. Antioxidant activities of leaf extract were evaluated by examining the free radical scavenging ability. 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and ${\alpha}-{\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activities of the extract were 1133.23 mg trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)/g residue and 721.68 mg TEAC/g residue, respectively. The hepatocyte protective effect of guava leaf extract was examined in HepG2 cells. Against tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP), the viability of HepG2 cells were increased by the treatment of leaf extract. In addition, guava leaf extract led to the inhibition of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in HepG2 cells. The leaf extract increased the activity of glutathione (GSH), glutathione reductase (GR), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) against oxidative stress. These results suggested that guava leaves might be regarded as a potential source natural antioxidant and a hepatoprotective material.
For the determination of anti oxidative effects of Korean red ginseng extracts, 100 mg/kg body weight of paraquat(1,1-dimethyl-4,4-bipyrimidinium dichloride) was injected to peritoneal cavity of 6 weeks 23-27 g of ICR mail mice which were pretreated with 200 mg/kg body weight of korean red ginseng extracts(total saponin, water extracts, alcohol extracts, lipophilic extracts) and ascorbic acid for 5 days. Most of mice died of paraquat toxicity within 4 days except only $30\%$ of ascorbic acid group. The hepatic total-SOD activity in liver was highest in ascorbic acid group and lipophilic ginseng extracts group next (p<0.0l). The level of hepatic hydroperoxide was lowest in the order of in alcohol extracts group, lipophilic extracts group and ascorbic acid group (p<0.0l). The highest catalase activity was induced by ascorbic acid followed by water extracts and lipophillic extracts (p<0.01). Finally, the lipid peroxidation level (malondialdehyde:MDA) was the lowest in water extracts group and ascorbic acid next (p<0.01). The highest MDA level was appeared in praquat group and next total saponin group next. In conclusion, the order of effectiveness of antioxidants was found to be ginseng water extracts> ascorbic acid> lipophillic extracts> other ginseng extracts. It was also found that any predominant antioxidant was not effective evenly to all of antioxidant test.
This study was conducted to compare the antioxidant, anticytotoxic, and anti-inflammatory properties of Euphorbia maculata ethanol extract with those of E. supina ethanol extract. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and superoxide scavenging activities of E. maculata at $50{\mu}g/mL$ were $38.3{\pm}3.7$ and $21.5{\pm}1.2%$, respectively, whereas those of E. supina at the same concentration were $109.4{\pm}0.9$ and $59.5{\pm}4.8%$, respectively. Oxygen radical absorbance capacities of E. maculata and E. supina at $10{\mu}g/mL$ were $14.70{\pm}0.63$ and $26.17{\pm}1.36nmol/mL$ Trolox, respectively. Cupric reducing antioxidant capacities of E. maculata and E. supina at $10{\mu}g/mL$ were $10.22{\pm}0.97$ and $62.99{\pm}5.28nmol/mL$ Trolox, respectively. Total phenolic contents of E. maculata and E. supina at $50{\mu}g/mL$ were $29.03{\pm}0.14$ and $87.89{\pm}0.20nmol/mL$ gallic acid, respectively. E. maculata and E. supina were reported to prevent supercoiled DNA breakage induced by peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals in a concentration-dependent manner, where protection against the supercoiled DNA breakage provided by E. supina was greater than that provided by E. maculata. E. maculata and E. supina at $100{\mu}g/mL$ inhibited tert-butyl hydroperoxide-induced cytotoxicity in HepG2 cells by $49.4{\pm}4.3$ and $87.3{\pm}4.5%$, respectively. E. maculata and E. supina at $500{\mu}g/mL$ inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells by $63.1{\pm}7.0$ and $85.2{\pm}1.6%$, respectively. The antioxidant capacities including DPPH radical scavenging, superoxide scavenging, oxygen radical absorbance, and cupric reducing antioxidant activity were found to be highly correlated with total phenolic content (0.896 < r < 0.983, p < 0.01) and anticytotoxic activities (0.915 < r < 0.960, p < 0.01). However, the superoxide scavenging activity was not significantly correlated (r = 0.604, p > 0.05) with the anti-inflammatory activity. Thus, these findings demonstrated that the radical scavenging, anticytotoxic, and anti-inflammatory capacities of E. supina were more potent than those of E. maculata. Further studies are needed to elucidate the properties of polyphenolic constituents in E. supina responsible for these effects and the underlying mechanisms.
Yellow and black soybean Cheonggukjangs (YBSC) prepared with an addition of onion (Allium cepa L.) in different contents (0, 5, 10, 20, and 30%, w/w) were manufactured, and the sensory evaluation was carried out. The optimum addition ratio of onion was determined to be 20%. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents of YBSC prepared with an addition of onion were higher than those of the YBSC prepared without an onion. In addition, YBSC prepared with an addition of onion showed higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activities than those prepared without an onion. Furthermore, rat blood plasma 1 hour after oral administration of YBSC prepared with an onion was more effective in suppressing the accumulation of cholesteryl ester hydroperoxide than those prepared without onion and control. These results indicated that the consumption of the YBSC prepared with onion may contribute to the antioxidant defense in vivo.

The study was performed to explore the molecular changes in the vegetative stage (3-and 5-leaf) of sorghum under waterlogging stress. A total of 74 differentially expressed protein spots were analyzed using LTQ-FT-ICR MS. Among them, 12 proteins were up-regulated and 3 proteins were down-regulated. Mass spectrometry (MS) results showed that about 50% of the proteins involved in various metabolic processes. The level of protein expression of malate dehydrogenase and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase related to carbohydrate metabolic process increased in both 3 and 5-leaf stage under waterlogging stress. These proteins are known to function as antistress agents against waterlogging stress. The expression of oxygen-evolving enhancer protein 1 protein related to photosynthesis was slightly increased in the treated group than in the control group, however the expression level was increased in the 5-leaf stage compared to the 3-leaf stage. Probable phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase protein and superoxide dismutase protein related to response to oxidative stress showed the highest expression level in 5-leaf stage treatment. This suggests that the production of reactive oxygen species by the waterlogging stress was the most abundant in the 5-leaf treatment group, and the expression of the antioxidant defense protein was increased.

This study was conducted to examine the antioxidant activity of 80% ethanol extract of celery seeds and to verify the effectiveness of extracts as a natural antioxidant to improve the stability of oil-in-water emulsions. The radical scavenging activity of 80% ethanol extract of celery seeds was significantly increased at 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 mg/mL (p<0.05). Additionally, the total phenolic content and FRAP value were equal to $8.2{\pm}2.3mol$ tannic acid equivalent/g extract and $195.0{\pm}12.6mol$ ascorbic acid equivalent/g extract, respectively. The headspace oxygen content was significantly higher in the group treated with 80% ethanol extract of celery seeds than in the control group (p<0.05). The amounts of lipid hydroperoxide and conjugated diene were significantly reduced compared to the control group (p<0.05). The results showed that the extract of celery seeds had excellent antioxidant ability and it could be used as a natural antioxidant owing to the increased oxidative stability of the emulsified product.
In this paper the effect of UV (ultraviolet) exposure on HDPE (high density polyethylene)-smooth and f-PP (flexible polypropylene) geomembranes is evaluated under UVB-313 (ultraviolet wavelength 290-315 nm) exposure. Tensile property, melt flow index (MFI), oxidation induction time (OIT), both standard-OIT and high pressure-OIT and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflectance (FTIR/ATR) results are discussed. Although tensile properties of the exposed geomembrane samples remained unchanged, the depletion of antioxidants was found higher for f-PP than for HDPE geomembrane. Arrhenius model by extrapolation was used on the data to predict the antioxidant lifetime to a typical site temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. There was no significant difference between the MFI value of the virgin and UV exposed HDPE geomembrane samples but a decrease in MFI was found in f-PP geomembrane that signifies that crosslinking has occurred. From FTIR spectra, the small peak (near $1750\;cm^{-1}$) observed in the spectrum of UV exposed sample corresponds to a carbonyl (C=O) linkage, which suggests that oxidation has occurred in the polymer structure, and another new band for f-PP between 3100 and $3500\;cm^{-1}$ is attributed to a hydroxyl bond and/or hydroperoxide bond.

The content of bioactive substances and antioxidative activity in conventionally grown brown rice (CGBR) and organically grown brown rice (OGBR) were compared. Minerals (mg/100 g) such as magnesium (OGBR, $168.59{\pm}2.62$; CGBR, $121.43{\pm}2.22$), copper (OGBR, $0.50{\pm}0.06$; CGBR, $0.41{\pm}0.05$), and manganese (OGBR, $4.70{\pm}0.04$; CGBR, $2.49{\pm}0.02$) were higher in OGBR than in CGBR (p<0.05). In addition, levels of (${\mu}g/100g$) vitamins B2 (OGBR, $27.22{\pm}2.56$; CGBR, $22.12{\pm}2.24$) and B6 (OGBR, $46.32{\pm}2.66$; CGBR, $39.91{\pm}3.32$) were higher in OGBR than in CGBR (p<0.05). The contents (mg/100 g) of ${\beta}$-sitosterol (OGBR, $27.40{\pm}2.79$; CGBR, $24.75{\pm}1.06$), total phenolic (OGBR, $6.72{\pm}0.02$; CGBR, $6.64{\pm}0.02$), and ferulic acid (OGBR, $1.75{\pm}0.45$; CGBR, $1.11{\pm}0.14$) as well as the antioxidative activity (OGBR, $53.09{\pm}1.90%$; CGBR, $48.29{\pm}3.38%$) evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay were higher in OGBR than in CGBR, although no significant differences between samples were observed. In comparison to the control group, brown rice samples significantly inhibited cholesteryl ester hydroperoxide formation in rat plasma subjected to copper ion-induced lipid peroxidation. The inhibitory effect of OGBR was higher than that of CGBR. These results indicate that OGBR showed higher levels of bioactive substances and enhanced antioxidative activity than CGBR, although the differences were not statistically significant.
