This study was performed to investigate effect of dried powder or ethanol extracts of onion flesh and peel intakes on lipid metabolism, antioxidative and antithrombogenic capacities in l6-month -old rats. Total of 40 Sprague-Dawley male rats of l6-month-old and weighing 816$\pm$6g were blocked into 5 groups according to body weight and raised for three months with control and experimental diets containing 5% (w/w) of dried powders of onion flesh or peel or ethanol extracts from equal amount of each dried powder. Contents of total flavonoids and total dietary fibers in peel powder were highest among onion preparations. Body weight gain and epididymal pad fat weight were lower in peel powder group than other groups. Plasma total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations of onion-containing groups were lower than control group. Above all, peel ethanol extract intake decreased them most remarkably. Plasma HDL-cholesterol concentrations in onion-containing groups were higher than control group, especially that of flesh powder group was the highest among groups. Liver total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations were not significantly different among all experimental groups. However, liver total lipid and triglyceride concentrations were tended to be lower in onion-containing groups than control group. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) concentrations in LDL + VLDL fraction was not significantly affected by onion intakes, However peel powder group showed the lowest concentration, Plasma TX $B_2$ concentrations in onion flesh powder, peel powder and peel ethanol extract groups were lower than control group, while plasma 6-keto-PG $F_{1a}$ concentrations in these same groups were higher than control group. Clotting time was tended to be increased in peel ethanol extract group. In conclusion onion diets seemed to improve lipid metabolism and antithrombogenic capacity while effect on antioxidative was not significant.t.

Volatile organic Compounds(VOC) were measured at an industrial site in Ulsan in 1997 and 1998. Twenty-four hour integrated ambient air samples were collected in 6 L SUMMA canisters during the periods of June 3 to 8, 1997 and June 12 to 17, 1998. The daily mean concentrations of the total $C_2-C_9$ VOC in 1998 were about one third of those in 1997. This decrease of VOC levels may be attributable to the measures to control the emissions of VOC and the decrease of the plant operation. The decrease in the concentrations of oxygenated hydrocarbons and alkenes, especially, contributed to the decrease of the total VOC concentrations in 1998. Lowever concentrations of alkenes compared to aromatics in 1998 were due to the decrease of ethylene and propylene. In the present study, methanol (12.0 ppb) was the most abundant species, followed by acetone (10.1 ppb), propane (6.0 ppb), and vinyl chloride (5.9 ppb). The total concentrations of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) in 1998 were reduced compared to those in 1997. However, this decrease is due to the drastic decrease of the concentration of methanol. Except methanol, the concentrations of HAPs have not varied much. It is suspected that the VOC control strategy for the Ulsan industrial area has been successful for reducing the total VOC levels but might not be effective in reducing the concentrations of HAPs.
This study was conducted longitudinally following the total nitrogen , total lipid, and lactose concentrations and their factors on concentrations of energy-yielding nutrients in human milk from 2-5 days to 12 weeks postpartum of 45 lactating Korean mothers. All samples were from well-defined subjects. And uniform collection procedures were used . Total nitrogen concentration of milk decreased significantly from 385mg/이 at 2-5 days to 201mg/dl at 12 weeks postpartum. Total lipid concentration increased from 1.98g/dl at 2-5 days to 3.09g/dl at 12 weeks postpartum. However, there was a large variation in the concentration of total lipids. Lactose concentration increased signifciantly from 6.53g/dl at 2-5 days to 7.48g/dl at 12 weeks. Total nitrogen concentration in milk was positively related to pregnancy weight gains at 2 and 6 weeks postpartum. Total lipid concentration was positively related to infant birth weight : however, it was negatively related to the maternal weight loss. In addition, total lipid concentration was positively related to parity and maternal percentage body fat at 12 weeks postpartum. Milk lactose concentration was positively related to parity at 2 weeks postpartum.
The effects of Geumguesingitang and Dohongsamultang on rats with nephrosis induced by a single tail-intravenous injection of puromycin aminonucleoside(PAN), 2.5mg/l00g of body weight were evaluated in the present study. The effects of Geumguesingitang and Dohongsamultang on PAN nephrosis were evaluated by measuring (1)the concentrations of albumin, total protein, total lipid, cholesterol, triglyceride, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen(BUN) and uric acid in the serum, (2)the concentrations of protein, creatinine, glucose, occult blood and volume of the 24 hours urine and (3)the volume of intake water. The results are summerized as follows; 1. In the Control group as compared to the Normal. the amount of protein of 24 hours urine was significantly increased, the concentrations of albumin and total protein were significantly decreased. Total lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride in the serum were significantly increased. The concentrations of creatinine, BUN, uric acid in the serum, the amount of glucose and occult blood of 24 hours urine were also increased significantly. 2. In the Geumguesingitang group as compared to the Control, the increase in the amount of urinary protein during 24 hours induced by PAN was significantly suppressed, and the concentrations of total protein and albumin in the serum were significantly increased. The concentrations of total lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride in the serum were significantly inhibited. The decrease of the concentrations of creatinine and uric acid in the serum were also observed significantly. 3. In the Dohongsamultang group as compared to the Control, the increase of the amount of protein and glucose of the 24 hours urine induced by PAN were significantly inhibited, and the concentrations of total protein and albumin in the serum were increased significantly. The concentrations of total lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride in the serum were decreased significantly. The decrease of the concentrations of creatinine and uric acid in the serum were observed significantly. It can be inferred that Geumguesingitang has effects on improving proteinuria, hypoproteinemia effectively. It has an effect on hyperlipidemia significantly relieved. And relieving azotemia when nephrotic syndrome is accompanied by the acute renal failure. It can be inferred that Dohongsamultang improves hyperlipidemia effectively. It has effects on proteinuria, hypoproteinemia in nephrotic syndrome significantly relieved. And relieving azotemia when nephrotic syndrome is accompanied by the acute renal failure.

Objectives: Particulate contaminants, such as total and respirable dusts, can harm the health of farm workers via several routes. The principal aims of this field study were to determine the concentrations and emissions of particulate contaminants: total and respirable dusts, in the different types of swine houses used in Korea, and allow objective comparison between Korea and the other countries in terms of swine housing types. Methods: The swine houses investigated in this research were selected with respect to three criteria: the manure removal system, ventilation mode and growth stage of pigs. Measurements of total and respirable dust concentrations and emissions in the swine houses were carried out on 5 housing types at 15 different farm sites per housing type. The swine houses investigated were randomly selected from farms situated within the central districts in Korea: province of Kyung-gi, Chung-buk and Chung-nam. Results: The total and respirable dust concentrations in the swine houses averaged $1.88\;and\;0.64mg/m^3$, ranging from $0.53\;to\;4.37mg/m^3$ and from $0.18\;to\;1.68mg/m^3$, respectively. The highest concentrations of total and respirable dusts were found in the swine houses with deep-litter bed systems: $2.94mg/m^3\;and\;1.14 mg/m^3$, while the lowest concentrations were found in the naturally ventilated buildings with slats: $0.83mg/m^3\;and\;0.24mg/m^3$, respectively (p<0.05). All the swine houses investigated did not exceed the threshold limit values (TLVs) for total ($10mg/m^3$) and respirable ($2.5mg/m^3$) dusts. The mean emissions of total and respirable dusts, per pig (75 kg in terms of live weight) and area ($m^2$), from the swine houses were 97.33 and 9.55 mg/h/pig and $37.14\;and\;12.83mg/h/m^2$, respectively. The swine houses with deep-litter bed systems showed the highest emissions of total and respirable dusts (p<0.05). However, the emissions of total and respirable dusts from the other swine houses were not significantly different (p>0.05). Conclusion: The concentrations and emissions of total and respirable dusts were relatively higher in the swine houses managed with deep-litter bed systems and ventilated naturally of the different swine housing types tested. In further research, more farms than the number used in this research should be investigated, which will present objective and accurate data on the concentrations and emissions of total and respirable dusts in Korean swine houses. In addition, personal sampling should be performed to objectively assess the exposure level of farm workers to particulate contaminants.
Workers' exposure to lead particles with diverse characteristics was assessed using personal cascade impactors in four different industries. Correlation analyses found that total airborne lead (PbA) concentrations could not explain the variation on MMAD of lead particles. From regression analysis, the concentrations of lead particles smaller than 1 um in AD were found to rise very slowly with increases in total PbA. They rarely contributed more than 50 ㎍/㎥ of total PbA over the range of 5.6-7,740 ㎍/㎥ although there are a few high values greater than 100 ㎍/㎥ while respirable lead concentrations significantly increased with increasing total PbA concentrations. In the secondary smelting and radiator manufacturing industries requiring high temperatures, the average fraction of respirable concentration in total PbA was 43.3% and 48.9%, respectively, which indicated an important contribution to the total PbA. In lead powder and battery manufacturing, it was less than 27%. Our study results concluded that workers' exposure to lead particles with diverse characteristics might not be effectively monitored by the current total PbA sampling alone. To protect workers exposed to different sizes of lead particles generated in many operations, an occupational standard for respirable lead particles should be added to the current total lead standard.
Previously, we reported that a diet including sesame meal (SM) increased plasma total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol concentrations in goats. In the present study, the components in the sesame meal that can increase plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations have been examined. In experiment 1, we gave goats defatted sesame meal diet (DSM) to investigate the influence of ether extract fraction remained in sesame meal. Corn gluten meal diet (CGM) was also fed to goats as a high-protein diet to examine the influence of high dietary protein level caused by usage of sesame meal. Plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations of goats fed DSM and CGM did not change during experimental periods though they were elevated by feeding SM. In experiment 2, the influence of sesame oil and corn oil added in diets on plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations in goats was investigated. Plasma total and HDL-cholesterol concentrations were increased by feeding both corn oil diet and sesame oil diet. In conclusion, the increase in plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration by feeding sesame meal was resulted by the effect of ether extract fraction including sesame oil or some lipid-soluble components remained in sesame meal.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary fibers (cellulose ; polydextrose ; pectin ; ricebran) supplementation on the kidney fucntion of hyperlipidemic-induced rats on a high cholesterol diet (5% cholesterol). Serum lipid concentrations were not influenced by dietary fiber sources, but the pectin group was effective in reducing serum lipid levels. Total serum protein and albumin concentrations tended to higher in the polydextrose group, and serum creatinine and urea-N concentrations were higher in the pectin group than those in the other groups. Even though total urinary protein was high in the pectin group, GFR was reduced (18~30% decrease) as compared to other groups. The urea-N level was elevated in the polydextrose group as compared to that of cellulose group(25% increase). Total lipid, triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations in the liver of pectin group were lower than those of other groups. Total lipid and cholesterol concentrations in the kidneys were reduced in pectin and ricebran groups, respectively. The total cholesterol concentration infecal was significantly high in the polydextrose and pectin groups(p<0.05), and the triglyceride was highest in the pectin group. These results indicate no significant effects of dietary fiber supplementation on the kidney function of hyperlipidemic-induced rats on a high cholesterol diet, but pectin was very effective to improve lipid metabolism and to reduce GFR.
This study was done to examine the relationship between serum chemical values (urea nitrogen, glucose, total protein and cholesterol) of recipients and pregnancy rate following embryo transfer. Blood samples were taken from 184 Holstein heifers or cows on Day 6 or 7 (Day 0=day of estrus) to analysis for serum urea nitrogen, glucose, total protein and cholesterol concentrations. After selection of recipients, frozen Holstein embryos were thawed and directly transferred to recipients non-surgically. The average serum concentrations of urea nitrogen, glucose, total protein and cholesterol were 13.8 mg/dl, 56.5 mg/dl, 7.2 mg/dl, 124.8 mg/dl, respectively. The average concentrations of serum urea nitrogen and cholesterol were lower (P<0.05) in pregnant recipients (10.7 mg/dl, 99.2 mg/dl) than in non-pregnant recipients (13.0 mg/dl, 122.2 mg/dl), respectively, although the concentrations of glucose and total protein were not different. These results show serum urea nitrogen and cholesterol concentrations can be used important factors for selection of recipients in Holstein.

In this study, the correlations of concentrations in sediment heavy metals between two pretreatment methods, total digestion and aqua regia digestion, have been investigated. Total 43 samples had been collected from streams and lakes in Yeongsan and Seomjin watersheds. They were decomposed in two pretreatment methods and five metal components (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn) were analyzed. Overall average concentrations of heavy metals were Zn>Cr>Pb>Ni>Cd in the order. The concentrations of aqua regia digestion were 35.0% (Cd), 53.8% (Cr), 66.2% (Ni), 64.4% (Pb) and 76.4% (Zn) of the concentrations of total digestion and heavy metal concentrations of total digestion were higher. Heavy metal concentrations in sediments from lakes were higher than those from streams. The correlation equations between the concentrations of total digestion and aqua regia digestion were obtained. The concentrations of Zn and Ni, which showed strong linear correlations, increased in aqua regia digestion as the concentration in total digestion increased. The linear correlation coefficients between two digestion methods for most analyzed metals were above the average correlation. However, these results can be applied with limitations due to heterogeneity of sediments.
