An experimental investigation was conducted on the interaction of vortices over a delta wing with the leading edge extension for three angles of attack($16^{\circ},\; 24^{\circ} \;and\; 28^{\circ}$) at Reynolds number of $1.76{\times}10^6.$ The experimental data included total pressure contours and velocity vectors using 5-hole probe measurements. Constant total pressure coefficient contours show the LEX vortex moves downward and outboard, while the wing vortex exhibited an inboard and upward migration. At near the trailing edge, these vortices reveal a direct interaction between the wing and LEX vortex, featuring a coiling of vortex cores about each other. The combined effect of the interaction of these two vortices and proximity to the wing surface results in the increase of the suction peak. This is in contrast to the result obtained on the delta wing alone configuration, where the effect of the vortex breakdown was manifested. The interaction of the wing and LEX vortices is more pronounced at higher AOA.

This paper presents a procedure for the design optimization of a centrifugal compressor. The centrifugal compressor consists of a centrifugal impeller, vaneless diffuser and volute. And, optimization techniques based on the radial basis neural network method are used to optimize the impeller of a centrifugal compressor. The Latin-hypercube sampling of design-of-experiments is used to generate the thirty design points within design spaces. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by using finite volume approximations and solved on hexahedral grids to evaluate the objective function of the total-to-total pressure ratio. Four variables defining the impeller hub and shroud contours are selected as design variables in this optimization. The results of optimization show that the total-to-total pressure ratio of the optimized shape at the design flow coefficient is enhanced by 2.46% and the total-to-total pressure ratios at the off-design points are also improved significantly by the design optimization.
This paper presents a design optimization for meridional profile and blade angle ${\theta}$ of a centrifugal compressor with DOE (design of experiments) and RSM (response surface method). Control points of the $3^{rd}$ order Bezier curve are used for design parameters and specific overall efficiency is used as object function. The response surface function shows good agreement with the 3D computational results. Three different optimized designs are proposed and compared with reference design at design point and off-design point. Contours of relative Mach number, static entropy, and total pressure are analyzed for improvement of performance by optimization. Off-design performance analysis is conducted by total pressure and efficiency.

A numerical analysis on three dimensional turbulent incompressible flows through linear cascades of turbine rotor blades with high turning angles has been performed by using a generalized k-.epsilon. model which is a high Reynolds number form and derived by RNG(renormalized group) method to account for the variation of the rate of strain. A second order upwind scheme is used to suppress numerical diffusion in approximating the convective terms. Body-fitted coordinates are adopted to represent the complex blade geometry accurately. For the case without tip clearance, velocity vectors and static pressure contours are shown to be in good agreement with previous experimental results. For the case with tip clearance, the effects of the passage vortex and tip clearance flow on the total pressure loss as well as their interactions are discussed.
This paper describes the dynamics of the weak shock wave propagating inside some kinds of branched pipe bends. Computations are carried out by solving the two-dimensional, compressible, unsteady Euler Equations. The second-order TVD(Total Variation Diminishing) scheme is employed to discretize the governing equations. For computations, two types of branched pipe($90^{\circ}$ branch,$45^{\circ}$ branch) with a diameter of D are used. The incident normal shock wave is assumed at D upstream of the pipe bend entrance, and its Mach number is changed between 1.1 and 2.4. The flow fields are numerically visualized by using the pressure contours and computed schlieren images. The comparison with the experimental data performed for the purpose of validation of computational work. Reflection and diffraction of the propagating shock wave are clarified. The present computations predicted the experimented flow field with a good accuracy.

A fluid transport technique is a key issue for the development of microfluidic systems. In this study, the movement of a droplet on horizontal hydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces, which is a new concept to transport droplets without external power sources that was recently proposed by the author, was simulated using an in-house solution code(PowerCFD). This code employs an unstructured cell-centered method based on a conservative pressure-based finite-volume method with interface capturing method(CICSAM) in a volume of fluid(VOF) scheme for phase interface capturing. The droplet transport mechanism is examined through numerical results that include velocity vectors, pressure contours, and total kinetic energy inside and around the droplet.
Procedures and results of aerodynamic design of a centrifugal compressor are presented for development of a 40kW class turbogenerator gas turbine. Specification of higher level of total pressure ratio of 4 and total efficiency of $80\%$ requires advanced methods of design and analysis. In the meanline design/analysis, a method with conventional loss modeling and a method with the two-zone model are alternately used for more reliable prediction. In the impeller blade generation, a series of Bezier curve are combined to produce meridional contours and distributions of blade camber angle and blade thickness. Intermediate profiles of blades are repeatedly produced and changed to be finally fixed through quasi-three dimensional Euler flow analysis. Three dimensional compressible turbulent flow analysis is then performed for the impeller to be confirmed in the final step of design. Satisfactory results in the aerodynamic performance are obtained, which assures that there is no need of aerodynamic re-design.
