In this study, alginate beads containing birnessite (Bir-AB), a highly reactive oxidative catalyst for the transformation of phenolic compounds, was prepared and its 1-naphthol (1-NP) removal efficiency was investigated in a batch test. Based on scanning electron microscopy image, it can be inferred that the alginate gel cluster acts as a bridge which bind the birnessite particles together. Kinetic experiment with Bir-AB of different mixing ratios of birnessite to alginate (Bir : AG=0.25 : 1~1 : 1 w/w) indicate that pseudo-first order kinetic constants, $k(hr^{-1})$ for the 1-NP removals increased about 1.5 times when the birnessite mixing ratio was doubled. The removals of 1-NP was found to be dependent on solution pH and the pesudo-first order rate constants were increased from 0.331 $hr^{-1}$ at pH 10 to 0.661 $hr^{-1}$ at pH 4. The analysis of total organic carbon for the reaction solutions showed that a higher removal of dissolved organic carbon was achieved with Bir-AB as compared to birnessite. HPLC chromatographic analysis of the methanol extract after reaction of 1-NP with Bir-AB suggest that the reaction products could be removed through incorporation into the aliginate beads as a bound residue. Mn ions produced from the oxidative transformation of 1-NP by birnessite were also removed by sorption to Bir-AB. The Bir-AB was recovered quantitatively by simple filtration and was reused twice without significant loss of the initial reactivity.

Fluid transport is a key issue in the development of microfluidic systems. Recently, Myong (2014) has proposed a new concept for droplet transport without external power sources, and numerically validated the results for a hypothetical 2D shape, initially having a hemicylindrical droplet shape. Myong and Kwon (2015) have also examined the transport mechanism for an actual water droplet, initially having a 3D hemispherical shape, on a horizontal hydrophilic/hydrophobic surface, based on the numerical results of the time evolution of the droplet shape, as well as the total kinetic, gravitational, pressure and surface free energies inside the droplet. In this study, a 3D numerical analysis of an initially spherical droplet is carried out to establish a new concept for droplet transport. Further, the transport mechanism of an actual water droplet is examined in detail from the viewpoint of the capillarity force imbalance through the numerical results of droplet shape and various energies inside the droplet.
The excessive land activities in farming can cause soil erosion, inundation by a flood, and fallow. So far land evaluation has been analyzed using the land use limitation derived from the excessive land activities. This study was done for evaluating the agricultural fields by using 3 land use limitations, inundation potential, soil erodibility potential, and fallow potential. The study area is Ibang-myeon, Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam-province, Korea. A logistic regression model was applied to recognize the inundation potential by a flood in the Nakdong river basin. And potential soil erodibility index (PSEI) was derived from USLE model to analyze the soil erodibility potential. And a probability model from a logistic regression model was applied to detect the fallow potential. Therefore, we found 220.7ha for the 4th grade and 86.1ha for the 5th grade was analyzed as water damage potential. Large area near Nakdong river have problem to grow the rice due to the damage by water inundation. And 213.6ha for the 3rd grade and 103.3ha for 4th grade was detected as a result of the analysis of soil erosion potential. The soil erosion potential was high when within-field integrity of soil was not stable, or the kinetic energy was high or the slope length was long due to a steep slope of a specific land. And 869.1ha for 3rd grade, 174.9ha for 4th grade, and 110.6ha for 5th grade was detected to be distributed having the fallow potential. Especially, a village, having a steep mountain, had 249.5ha for the 3rd grade, which was 28.7% of total area showing the 3rd grade. Finally, Three villages, including An-ri, Geonam-ri, Songgok-ri, showed they had largest area of the suitable land in the study area. These villages had similar topographic condition where they were far from Nakdong river, and they had relatively higher elevation and flat lands.
In $N_{x}$ films were deposited on soda-lime glass without substrate heating by reactive dc magnetron sputtering using indium (In) metal target. Depositions were carried out under various total gas pressures ( $P_{tot}$) of mixture gases (Ar+$N_2$ or He+$N_2$). He gas was introduced to $N_2$ gas in order to enhance the reactivity of nitrogen on film surface by the "penning ionization". Plasma impedance decreased greatly when 20% or more introduced the $N_2$ gas. This is due to the In $N_{x}$ layers formed on target surface because a secondary electron emission rate of InN is small compared with In metal. XRD patterns of the films revealed that <001> preferred oriented polycrystalline In $N_{x}$ films, where the crystallinity of the films was improved with decrease of $P_{tot}$ and with increase of $N_2$ flow ratio. The improvement of the crystallinity and stoichimetry of the In $N_{x}$ films were considered to be caused by an increase in the activated nitrogen radicals and also by an increase in the kinetic energy of sputtered In atoms arriving at growing film surface, which should enhance the chemical reaction and surface migration on the growing film surface, respectively. Furthermore, the films deposited using mixture gases of He+$N_2$ showed higher crystallinity compared with the film deposited by the mixture gases of Ar+$N_2$.$.EX>.
The effects of divalent cations, $Hg^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, Cd^{2+}$, and $Mn^{2+}$ on the total ATPase activity of the fragmented sarcoplasmic reticulum isolated from rabbit skeletal muscle were investigated. The inhibitory effects of the cations on the enzyme activity increased as the concentrations of the ions increased with the order of efficiency of $Hg^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Pb^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Mn^{2+}$ in the concentration range between 10 and 500$\mu$M. The 50% inhibition for each ion was almost identical with the inhibition constant (Ki) value for each ion. The Ki's were 10, 30 130, and 350$\mu$M for $Hg^{2+}, Cu^{2+}, Pb^{2+}, and Cd^{2+}$, respectively. $Mn^{2+}$ seemed to be an activator at lower concentrations and an inhibitor at higher concentrations. The presence of the cations did not change the Km values, suggesting that the ions act as a reversible noncompetitive inhibitor on the FSR ATPase. The energy of activation of the enzyme was aproximately 19 Kcal/mole. The presence of the ions decreased the value slightly. A possible mechanism for the reversible noncompetitive inhibitory effect of the cations was discussed.
Several quality parameters affecting Alaska pollack, Theragra chalcogramma, were measured and modeled kinetically under storage at different temperatures: the K-value, trimethylamine (TMA), volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), Torry meter, pH, acid value (AV), total viable cell count (TVC), and colony forming units (CFU) of Pseudomonas spp. The off-flavor development time (ODT) was also measured using the R-index sensory test and modeled kinetically. Among the quality parameters, the CFU of Pseudomonas spp. was an indicator of the ODT according to a similarity in the Arrhenius temperature dependence, which was derived as a criterion mathematically. The temperature dependence was represented by the Arrhenius's activation energy ($E_a$). On comparing the $E_a$ of the quality factors and the ODT, the similarity in the temperature dependence was found to be high in the order Pseudomonas spp., pH, VBN, TVC, K-value, TMA, AV, and Torry meter. Therefore, Pseudomonas spp. was identified as the primary indicator of ODT.

In this paper, the movement of an actual water droplet, initially having a 3D hemispherical shape, on horizontal hydrophilic/hydrophobic surfaces is simulated using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package, Fluent, with VOF (volume of fluid) method. For spatial free vibration of non-symmetric thin-walled curved beams with shear deformation, an improved formulation is proposed in the present study. The elastic strain and the kinetic energies are first derived by considering constant curvature and shear deformation effects due to shear forces and restrained warping torsion. Next equilibrium equations and force-deformation relations are obtained using a stationary condition of total potential energy. And the finite element procedures are developed by using isoparametric curved beam element with arbitray thin-walled sections. Particularly not only shear deformation and thickness-curvature effects on vibration behaviors of curved beams but also mode transition and crossover phenomena with change in curvatures of beams are parametrically investigated. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the reliability of this study, various numerical solutions for spatial free vibration are compared with results by available references and ABAQUS's shell element.
Turbulence produced on roadways is one of the major factors determining the dilution rates at the initial stage of traffic emissions of air pollutants and, thus, the distribution of air pollutants near the roadways. Field experiments were conducted on Gyeongbu Highway, one of the busiest highways in Korea, for 4~7 days in winter, spring, and summer. Two three-dimensional ultrasonic anemometers were installed on both sides of the highway to estimate turbulence intensities (vertical wind fluctuation and kinetic turbulence energy) induced by the roadway. Roadway-induced turbulence consists of three components: structural road-induced turbulence (S-RIT), thermal road-induced turbulence (T-RIT), and vehicle-induced turbulence (VIT). The contribution of T-RIT to the total RIT was insignificant (less than 10%), and the majority of RIT was S-RIT (by the highway embankment) and VIT. In this study, we propose the empirical relationships of VIT as a function of traffic density and wind speed under free-flow traffic conditions. Although this empirical relationship appears to underestimate the VIT, it can be applied to the air quality models easily because the relationship is simple and only needs readily obtainable input variables (wind speed and traffic information).
The characteristics of desorption reaction and the heating values of used activated carbons collected from the companies of Shiwha/Banwal industrial complex were investigated. The desorption characteristics of used activated carbons were analyzed based on the data obtained from a thermogravimetric analyzer. The activation energies and reaction orders for desorption reaction of used activated carbons were calculated by employing Freeman-Carroll method. Heating values of volatile organic compounds(VOC) desorbed from used activated carbons were estimated based on the data obtained from a total hydrocarbon analyzer. It was found that the reaction orders of desorption of used activated carbons were 0.1~0.8, their desorption activation energies, 6.9~26.4 kJ/mol, and VOC heating values, 0.4~10.7 kcal/kg.
