Distribution of Airborne Hexavalent Chromium Concentrations in Large Industrial Complexes in Korea

  • This paper reports the results of a field evaluation which used sampling and analytical methods to determine the levels of airborne hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) in major industrial complexes in Korea over a seven year period (2007-2013). Cr(VI) concentrations were determined using cellulose filter sampling and ion chromatography analysis. In order to validate the analytical performance of these methods, studies were also carried out to investigate data quality control (QC) parameters, such as the method detection limit (MDL), repeatability, and recovery efficiencies. The average concentrations of Cr(VI) for the nine industrial complexes in Korea were in the range of 0.09 to $1.40ng/m^3$, which is similar to of the concentrations in other industrial areas around the world. The impacts of Cr(VI) emissions from industrial areas on Cr(VI) concentrations in neighboring-residential areas were considerably low, and the dispersion of Cr(VI) from industrial areas to residential areas was estimated to be 'not-significant'. Cr(VI) levels were not affected by seasonal variation, which suggests that chromium was emitted continuously from the industrial sources throughout the year. The concentration of Cr(VI) measured accounted for 0.7 to 9.4 percent of the total chromium level, which is a low percentage compared to those in other urban areas around the world. This is the first report in an international journal of a field study conducted in Korea to determine the concentration of Cr(VI) in the ambient air of industrial and residential areas.

A hybrid cardiac rehabilitation is as effective as a hospital-based program in reducing chest pain intensity and discomfort

  • Background: Health care services effort to provide alternative cardiac rehabilitation (CR) models to serve patients according to their preferences and needs. So, the present study aimed to assess and compare the effects of hospital-based and hybrid CR programs on chest pain intensity and discomfort in cardiac surgery patients. Methods: In this prospective study, 110 cardiac surgery patients were invited to the CR department of a hospital in the western part of Iran between March and July 2016. Patients were divided into two groups: hospital-based and hybrid CR. The hospital-based program included 26 sessions, and the hybrid program included 10 training sessions and exercise. The Brief Pain Inventory and Pain Discomfort Scale were used as research instrument, and data were analyzed using the paired t-test and ANCOVA. Results: The results indicated that both hospital-based and hybrid CR are effective in reducing the chest pain intensity and discomfort of cardiac surgery patients (P < 0.05). In addition, the comparison of scores before and after treatment using ANCOVA shows that no significant differences were observed between the two programs (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Traditional hospital-based CR delivery is still the first choice for treatment in developing countries. However, hybrid CR is as effective as a hospital-based program in reducing pain components and it includes only 38% of the total cost in comparison to hospital-based delivery. So, we recommend using hybrid CR according with the recommendations of American Heart Association about using CR for the management of angina symptoms.

Electric Field Induced Super-cooling System for Long Term Dry-aged Beef Loin

  • This study investigates the utilization of an electric-field-induced super cooling system in long-term dry aging of beef loin. Analyzed quality properties of dry-aged beef loin applied with electric field refrigeration (EFR) versus commercial refrigeration (CR). Quality properties was including aging loss, pH, water holding capacity (WHC), cooking loss, color, warner-bractzler shear force (WBSF), total plate count (TPC), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Aging loss of wk 1 EFR was significantly lower than CR (p<0.05). pH of EFR was slow change tendency compared CR. WHC of both aging methods were higher with increase in aging duration. Cooking loss of wk 1, 2, 4, and 10 EFR were significantly lower than CR (p<0.05). Lightness and redness of EFR was slow change tendency compared CR. However, yellowness of EFR was increased until wk 2, 3, and significantly decreased at wk 10 (p<0.05), but yellowness of CR was decreased until wk 3 and significantly increased with an increasing aging weeks (p<0.05). Both aging methods of WBSF was decreased with increase in aging weeks; however, wk 10 of CR was significantly lower than EFR (p<0.05). TPC after wk 3 EFR groups were significantly lower than CR groups (p<0.05), and TBARS of EFR groups were significantly lower than CR (p<0.05). The present results show that application of the EFR system for dry aging beef loin can extends its shelf life and induce changes of several aging properties in similar to commercial aging.

Effect of Chromium Picolinate on Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics, Serum Metabolites and Metabolism of Lipid in Pigs

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of chromium picolinate (CrP) on growth, carcass characteristics and serum metabolites in growing-finishing pigs. A total of 96 Landrace$\times$Yorkshire$\times$Duroc hybrid pigs, initial live weight about $38.12{\pm}00kg$, were randomly assigned to 2 groups (16 pigs per pen, 3 pens per group), each group had 48 pigs with an equal number of barrows and gilts. The pigs were fed the diet with or without $200{\mu}g/kg$ Cr from CrP. The results indicated that the addition of $200{\mu}g/kg$ CrP increased ADG by 3.58% and decreased feed conversion rate (FCR) by 3.00% compared to the control group. Pigs fed CrP had 7.58% (p<0.05) higher carcass lean percentage, 15.55% (p<0.05) larger longissimus muscle area (LMA) and 10.90% (p<0.05) lower back fat thickness, 15.17% (p<0.05) lower carcass fat percentage. In addition, the IGF-I level in serum was elevated by 79.20% (p<0.05), the Insulin and cortisol level decreased by 27.35% (p<0.05) and 34.58% (p<0.05) respectively with supplementation of CrP. Analysis of subcutaneous fat (10th rib) showed that the activity of hormone sensitive lipase (HSL) increased by 79.58% (p<0.05) and the activities of isocitrate dehydrogenase (ISD) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) decreased significantly by 15.06% (p<0.05) and 54.53% (p<0.05) respectively in the $200{\mu}g/kg$ CrP group. The concentration of RNA, RNA/DNA in LMA increased by 31.89% (p<0.05) and 5.41% (p<0.05) respectively with the addition of CrP. These results suggest that CrP reduced fat deposits by decreasing lipogenic enzyme activities and increasing HSL activity and may have promoted muscle anabolic metabolism through elevated IGF-I levels.

  • This study aims to investigate the effect of carbon content on the surface nitrogen permeation of 13%Cr-1.8%Al alloyed stainless steels. The surface nitrogen permeation was performed at $1050^{\circ}C{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ in the $1kg/cm^2$ nitrogen gas atmosphere. The nitrogen permeated surface layer of the specimen containing 0.03%C consists of AlN, martensite and retained austenite phases. while the surface layer of the specimen containing 0.14%C appears the $AlFe_3C_x$ phase including former three phases. The specimen containing 0.14%C shows lower total case depth than that containing 0.03%C at the nitrogen permeation temperatures of $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$, while the total case depth of the specimen containing 0.14%C is remarkably increased at the temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$ due to the increase in the retained austenite content. Martensitic phase, AlN and $AlFe_3C_x$ precipitate of the nitrogen permeated surface layer cause to increase the surface hardness of 550~600Hv.

Optimal timing for salvage surgery after definitive radiotherapy in hypopharyngeal cancer

  • Purpose: Use of radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy is increasing in hypopharyngeal cancer. However, many show residual tumor after radiotherapy. Timing for treatment evaluation and salvage therapy is essential. However, optimal timing for salvage surgery has not been suggested. In this study, we tried to evaluate optimal timing for salvage surgery. Methods and Materials: Patients who were diagnosed with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma between 2006 and 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. All patients received definitive radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. Response of all treated patients were analyzed at 1, 3, and 6 months after radiotherapy. Any patients with progression before 6 months were excluded. Results: A total of 54 patients were analyzed. Complete remission (CR) rates at 1 month (CR1), 3 months (CR3) and 6 months (CR6) were 66.7%, 81.5%, and 90.7%, respectively. Non-CR at 1 month (NCR1), 3 months (NCR3), and 6 months (NCR6) showed poor locoregional recurrence-free survival rates (1-year rates of 63.7%, 66.7%, and 0.0%, respectively) compared to CR1, CR3, and CR6 (1-year rates 94.3%, 88.0%, and 91.5%, respectively). Particularly significant differences were seen between CR6 and NCR6 (p < 0.001). Of 10 patients with NCR3, 5 showed CR at 6 months (NCR3/CR6). There was no statistical difference in locoregional recurrence-free survival between CR3 and NCR3/CR6 group (p = 0.990). Conclusion: Our data suggest half of patients who did not show CR at 3 months eventually achieved CR at 6 months. Waiting until 6 months after radiotherapy may be appropriate for avoiding additional salvage therapy.

  • trans-[Cr(tn)$_2Cl_2]^+$ 및 trans-[Cr(en)(tn)Cl$_2]^+$ 이온의 수화반응속도를 분광광도법을 이용하여 온도의 압력을 변화시켜 가면서 측정하였다. 활성화부피는 모두 음의 값을 가졌으며. 이들 착이온의 경우 그 범위는 -1.7 ∼ -2.9cm$^3$mol$^{-1}$이었다. 활성화엔트로피 및 활성화압축류 계수는 작은 음의 값을 가졌다. 이러한 열역학적 결과로부터 이들 착이온의 수화반응은 교환회합 메카니즘으로 진행됨을 추정할 수 있다. 한편 각중첩모형 체제내에서 가상적 중간체의 총 안정화에너지를 고려하여 반응경로와 전이상태의 구조에 대한 정보를 얻을 수 있는데 추정한 메카니즘과 실험적으로 관찰된 결과가 일치함을 알았다.

치과용 Ni-Cr 합금의 조성에 따른 세라믹의 색차 분석 (Ceramic color differences of dental Ni-Cr alloy by compositional change)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate alloys spectrophotometrically including yttrium of nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr) alloys, which are used as substitutes for the regulation of beryllium and provide helpful improvements in Ni-Cr alloys. Methods: Four groups of specimens (ZN, ZY, SN and EM) were prepared for analysis. Color parameters were measured with a spectrophotometer, and color difference (∆E*) was calculated. The t-test and one-way analysis of variance test were used to determine significant difference, and the Tukey test was used to identify where the differences were. To measure the spectroscopic reflectivity, the spectroscopic reflectance was measured and converted into CIE L*, a*, b* color system. Results: The ∆E* value of each metal ceramic group after opaque firing of Ni-Cr alloy with and without yttrium was <2, and the total group color difference (∆E*) was below 1 in the dentin ceramic all experimental group. However, the a* and b* values of the metal ceramic groups were higher than that in the lithium disilicate all ceramic group, and the chroma was higher than the natural tooth. The brightness of all experimental groups was similar to that of the shade guide sample. Conclusion: Yttrium added to Ni-Cr alloys showed similar CIE L*, a*, b* values to Ni-Cr alloys that did not contain yttrium, indicating that yttrium had no effect on color in metallic ceramic systems.

Effects of concentrate level and chromium-methionine supplementation on the performance, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, blood metabolites, and meat quality of Tan lambs

  • Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of concentrate level and chromium-methionine (Cr-Met) supplementation on the growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, and fatty acid composition of Tan lambs. Methods: Sixty male Tan lambs (21±1.23 kg body weight) fed a finishing diet (concentrate-to-forage ratio: 35:65 [LC group] or 55:45 [HC group]) with daily Cr-Met supplementation (0, 0.75, or 1.50 g) were used in a completely randomized design with a 2×3 factorial arrangement of treatments. Results: Lambs from the HC group had higher average daily gain, dry matter (DM) digestibility, dressing percentages, leg proportions, intramuscular fat (IMF) contents, and saturated fatty acid levels, but lower feed conversion ratios, globulin (GLB) and total protein (TP) concentrations, shear force, and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) levels (all p<0.05). Cr-Met supplementation increased the DM digestibility, GLB and TP concentrations, rack and loin percentages, and cooking loss, but decreased the IMF contents and leg proportions (all p<0.05). Cr-Met supplementation at 0.75 g/d increased the conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content in both the HC and LC groups (p<0.01). Significant interactions between the concentrate level and Cr-Met dosage were observed for MUFA (p<0.01) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) (p<0.01) levels. Meat from the lambs fed an unsupplemented LC diet presented the highest PUFA and MUFA levels (p<0.01). However, the MUFA and PUFA levels decreased significantly with increasing Cr-Met supplementation levels in the LC group (p<0.01), whereas the opposite trend was seen in the HC group. Conclusion: The HC diet improved the growth performance of Tan lambs, increased their profitability by increasing leg and rack joint proportions, and improved meat quality by promoting an IMF content that was more visibly acceptable to consumers. Cr-Met supplementation at 0.75 g/d in a HC diet was the best choice and may be economically beneficial.

한국 남서해안 도암만 표층퇴적물의 중금속 함량 및 분포 특성 (Heavy Metals in Surface Sediments from Doam Bay, Southwestern Coast of Korea)

  • 한국 남서해 연안의 도암만에서 44개 표층퇴적물을 채취하여 총유기탄소(TOC), 총질소(TN) 및 중금속(Al, Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn)을 분석하였으며, 11개 시료에 대해서는 화학적 존재형태별 분석을 병행하였다. TOC(0.32~3.10%), TN(0.03~0.26%)은 주변 해역의 평균 수준이었고, C/N 비(7.9~11.9)에 근거할 때 육상기원 유기물의 영향이 반영된 일부 지역이 구분되었다. 중금속 함량은 대부분의 정점에서 해양퇴적물 주의기준(TEL) 이하였고, 화학적 존재형태별 함량은 광물격자부분에서 Cr, Cu, Ni 등이, 비광물격자부분에서 Mn, Pb가 총량의 절반을 상회하였다. 연구지역의 중금속 배경농도를 누적빈도곡선과 선형회귀분석에 의해 추정한 결과 Cu=11.8, Ni=23.1, Pb=26.8, Zn=76.6, Cr=56.7, Mn=585 mg/kg으로 계산되었으며, 이를 바탕으로 한 농축지수($I_{geo}$)에 근거해 국지적인 Mn 농축의 징후를 확인하였다. 그러나 농축지수와 존재형태비를 고려할 때 Zn, Pb도 환경변화에 따른 용출 가능성이 추정되었다.
