We present a torsion analysis of single-bent leaf flexure that is partially restrained, subject to a torsional load. The theoretical equations for the torsional angle are derived using Castigliano's theorem. These equations consider the partially restrained warping, and are verified using finite element analysis (FEA). A sensitivity analysis over the length, width, and thickness is performed and verified via FEA. The results show that the errors between the theory result and the FEA result are lower than 6%. This indicates that the proposed theoretical torsional analysis with partially restrained warping is sufficiently accurate.

Long shafts for power transmission should transmit torsional load with vibrational stability. Hybrid shafts made of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite and metal have high fundamental bending natural frequency as well as high torque transmission capability. However, thermal residual stresses due to the coefficient difference of thermal expansion of the composite and metal are developed so that the high residual stresses decrease fatigue resistance of the hybrid shafts, especially at low operating temperatures. In this work, axial compressive preload was given to the shaft in order to change the residual stresses. Static and fatigue torsional tests were performed and correlated with stress analyses with respect to the preload and service temperature.

The upper bound analysis by stream function is used to study the torsional forward extrusion. The torsional forward extrusion process not only reduces forming load but also increase optimal die angle. Optimal die angle is determined by the optimization technique. The advantages of this process are that the low capacity of pressing machine can be used and the process with a large die angle can be applied. To verify the theoretical result, we have carried out experiments using model material (plasticine) and FE simulations using DEFORM3D.

A general geometrically non-linear model for lateral-torsional buckling of thick and thin-walled FGM box beams is presented. In this model primary and secondary torsional warping and shear effects are taken into account. The coupled equilibrium equations obtained from Galerkin's method are derived and the corresponding tangent matrix is used to compute the critical moments. General expression is derived for the lateral-torsional buckling load of unshearable FGM beams. The results are validated by comparison with a 3D finite element simulation using the code ABAQUS. The influences of the geometrical characteristics and the shear effects on the buckling loads are demonstrated through several case studies.

It is recommended to have symmetric plan and elevation in structural design of hight-rise building structures to reduce torsional response of the structures. However it is not always allowed to do so due to architectural purposes. in many cases high-rise buildings are asymmetric. The purpose of this study is to predict the torsional behavior of high-rise building structures with asymmetric plan. Equivalent lateral stiffness and deformation shape factor are used for prediction of torsional response of high-rise buildings. Overall torsion of a structure is estimated by equivalent lateral stiffness and torsion of each floor is estimated by deformation factor in each 2-D lateral force resisting elements.

There have been many attempts to make kart chassis domestically to lower the price of complete kart. However nobody made a successful chassis due to the lack of understanding the characteristics of kart chassis frame. In this work, a baseline chassis frame under the bending and torsional load is studied. Design target is that the baseline chassis frame is quite adequate not only for the beginners but also for the beginning racers. Results from the analysis are used as a guide to design or modify the baseline chassis with the goal of proper torsional stiffness. Minimum increase in weight is being forced. As a result, the baseline chassis frame was designed, made, and tested. Based on the design results, complete karts are being manufactured by the small 1 size domestic company and these karts are being sold and run in the market.
The paper considers aspects of the energy dissipation response of selected realistic forms of torsionally balanced and torsionally unbalanced building systems, responding to an ensemble of strong-motion earthquake records. Focus is placed on the proportion of the input seismic energy which is dissipated hysteretically, and the distribution of this energy amongst the various lateral load-resisting structural elements. Systems considered comprise those in which torsional effects are discounted in the design, and systems designed for torsion by typical code-defined procedures as incorporated in the New Zealand seismic standard. It is concluded that torsional response has a fundamentally significant influence on the energy dissipation demand of the critical edge elements, and that therefore the allocation of appropriate levels of yielding strength to these elements is a paramount design consideration. Finally, it is suggested that energy-based response parameters be developed in order to assist evaluations of the effectiveness of code torsional provisions in controlling damage to key structural elements in severe earthquakes.

With bending moment, torsional moment due to geometric properties as "Initial curvature" acts in horizontally curved I-girder. These behavior causes the secondary effect of bending in minor-axis because of interaction between bending and torsion. The bending and torsion interaction cause a loss of load bearing capacity by induced the early inelastic or plasticity condition in curved girder. Also eccentric load by movements of traffic can increase torsion. However, Equation of interaction between bending and torsion for straight girder, not deal with characteristics of curved girder behavior in previous studies, can be overestimated for ultimate strength in horizontally curved I-girder acting vertical force. Therefore, using more rational, obvious suggestion is required when design curved girder. In this study, we identified the bending-torsional moment interaction for the horizontally curved I-girder of the eccentric load acting by FEM analysis.

This paper presents theoretical and finite element analysis results for the lateral-torsional buckling of I-girders with corrugated web under uniform bending. Lateral-torsional buckling is a major design aspect for flexural members composed of thin-walled I-section. However, torsional rigidities such as the warping constants of the I-girders with corrugated web are not fully understood yet. In this paper, bending and pure torsional rigidities of I-girders with corrugated web are first described using the results of previous researchers. Then, the location of the shear center and the warping constants are derived. Using the derived section properties of I-girders with corrugated web, the lateral-torsional buckling strength is determined. Finite element analyses are conducted and the proposed lateral-torsional buckling strength of I-girders with corrugated web is successfully verified. Finally, the effects of corrugation profiles of the web on the lateral-torsional buckling load of I-girders with corrugated web are discussed.
Reinforced concrete vertical silos are universal structures that store large amounts of granular materials. Due to the asymmetric structure, heavy load, uneven storage material distribution, and the difference between the storage volume and the storage material bulk density, the corresponding earthquake is very complicated. Some scholars have proposed the calculation method of horizontal forces on reinforced concrete vertical silos under the action of earthquakes. Without considering the effect of torsional effect, this article aims to reveal the expansion factor of the silo group considering the torsional effect through experiments. Through two-way seismic simulation shaking table tests on reinforced concrete column-supported group silo structures, the basic dynamic characteristics of the structure under earthquake are obtained. Taking into account the torsional response, the structure has three types of storage: empty, half and full. A comprehensive analysis of the internal force conditions under the material conditions shows that: the different positions of the group bin model are different, the side bin displacement produces a displacement difference, and a torsional effect occurs; as the mass of the material increases, the structure's natural vibration frequency decreases and the damping ratio Increase; it shows that the storage material plays a role in reducing energy consumption of the model structure, and the contribution value is related to the stiffness difference in different directions of the model itself, providing data reference for other researchers; analyzing and calculating the model stiffness and calculating the internal force of the earthquake. As the horizontal side shift increases in the later period, the torsional effect of the group silo increases, and the shear force at the bottom of the column increases. It is recommended to consider the effect of the torsional effect, and the increase factor of the torsional effect is about 1.15. It can provide a reference for the structural safety design of column-supported silos.
