  • Objectives: This study aimed to compare the torsional and cyclic fatigue resistance of ProGlider (PG), WaveOne Gold Glider (WGG), and TruNatomy Glider (TNG). Materials and Methods: A total of 15 instruments of each glide path system (n = 15) were used for each test. A custom-made device simulating an angle of 90° and a radius of 5 millimeters was used to assess cyclic fatigue resistance, with calculation of number of cycles to failure. Torsional fatigue resistance was assessed by maximum torque and angle of rotation. Fractured instruments were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analyzed with Shapiro-Wilk and Kruskal-Wallis tests, and the significance level was set at 5%. Results: The WGG group showed greater cyclic fatigue resistance than the PG and TNG groups (p < 0.05). In the torsional fatigue test, the TNG group showed a higher angle of rotation, followed by the PG and WGG groups (p < 0.05). The TNG group was superior to the PG group in torsional resistance (p < 0.05). SEM analysis revealed ductile morphology, typical of the 2 fracture modes: cyclic fatigue and torsional fatigue. Conclusions: Reciprocating WGG instruments showed greater cyclic fatigue resistance, while TNG instruments were better in torsional fatigue resistance. The significance of these findings lies in the identification of the instruments' clinical applicability to guide the choice of the most appropriate instrument and enable the clinician to provide a more predictable glide path preparation.

  • The adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint shows a nonlinear relationship between the applied torque and the resulting displacement under the static-torsional loading, which is induced from the nonlinear properties of the adhesive. However the torque transmission capability in the case of the dynamic-torsional loading is much less than that in the case of the static-torsional loading, the stress level of the adhesive is usually in the region of the linear stress and strain relation and the stress distributions of the joint can be obtained by the linear analysis. In this paper, a failure model for the adhesively bonded tubular single lap joint under the torsional fatigue loading was developed with respect to the adhesive thickness that was a critical factor in predicting the static torque transional-cyclic loadings was proposed.

  • Torsional interaction between electrical network phenomena and turbine-generator shaft cause torsional stress on turbine-generator shaft and torsional fatigue fracture on vulnerable component, but the prediction of the torsional stress is difficult because the torsional stress is occurred instantly and randomly. Therefore continuous monitoring of the torsional stress on turbine-generator shaft is necessary to predict the torsional fatigue, but installing the sensors on the surface of the shaft directly to monitor the stress is impossible practically. In this study torsional vibration was measured using magnetic sensor at a point of turbine-generator rotor kit, the torsional stress of whole train of rotor kit was calculated using rotor kit's stress model and the calculated results were verified in comparison with the measured results using strain gauge at several point of turbine-generator rotor kit. It is expected that these experiment results will be used effectively to calculate the torsional stress of whole train of turbine-generator rotor in power plants.

  • Two stroke low speed diesel engines are widely used for marine propulsion or as power plant prime mover. These engines have many merits which includes higher thermal efficiency, mobility and durability. Yet various annoying vibrations occur sometimes in ships or at the plant itself. Of these vibrations, torsional vibration is very important and dictates a careful investigation during the engme's initial design stage for safe operation. With the rule and limit on torsional vibration in place, shaft strength fatigue due to torsional vibration however demands further analysis which possibly can be incorporated in the classification societies' rule and limit. In addition, the shaft's torsional vibration stresses can be calculated equivalently from accumulated fatigue cycles number due to transient torsional vibration in time domain. In this paper, authors suggest a new estimation method combined with Palmgren-Miner equation. A 6S70MC-C ($25,320ps{\times}91rpm$) engine for ship propulsion was selected as a case study. Angular velocity was measured, instead of shaft's strain, for simplified measurement and it was converted to torsional vibration stress for accumulated fatigue cycle numbers in shafting life time. Likewise, the accumulated fatigue calculation was compared with shaft fatigue strength limit. This new method can be further realized and confirmed in ship with two stroke low speed diesel engine.

  • In order to evaluate the relation between prior structure and fatigue strength on a induction surface hardened medium carbon steel(SAE1050M) for automotive drive shafts, torsional fatigue test were conducted with various cases of different hardened depths and applied loads. Prior structures of the steel such as pearlite, fine pearlite and spheroidal pearlite were prepared by conventional nomalizing, tempering after quenching and spheroidized annealing, respectively. Maximum torsional fatigue strength can be obtained when the case depth is 18~25% diameter of the bar in each prior structure. The effect of case depth on the torsional fatigue strength was different depending on applied load to specimen, but the most good fatigue life was shown in the case of pearlitic structure when the case depth was 4.0~5.5mm(18~25% of bar diameter). Among three different prior structures, energy consumption, to obtain high strength or to get the same case depth, was the most saved in the case of pearlitic structure.

  • Torsional vibration analysis is necessary at design stage to ensure the reliability of a system particularly when the driven machine is a reciprocating compressor. This paper contains the results of torsional vibration analysis and fatigue strength evaluation for 540 kW compressor driving motor. Torsional vibration analysis showed that the $2^{nd}$ torsional mode of the entire shaft system has the possibility of resonance with the $14^{th}$ order excitation of compressor and twin line frequency of motor at operating speed. Therefore, the analyses were required to ensure the structural reliability of the motor. The fatigue strength was evaluated for the shaft and inner fans using the results of forced vibration analysis. It is concluded that the motor has sufficient fatigue strength under normal operating condition.

  • Long shafts for power transmission should transmit torsional load with vibrational stability. Hybrid shafts made of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite and metal have high fundamental bending natural frequency as well as high torque transmission capability. However, thermal residual stresses due to the coefficient difference of thermal expansion of the composite and metal are developed so that the high residual stresses decrease fatigue resistance of the hybrid shafts, especially at low operating temperatures. In this work, axial compressive preload was given to the shaft in order to change the residual stresses. Static and fatigue torsional tests were performed and correlated with stress analyses with respect to the preload and service temperature.

  • The diesel engine and reduction gear combination is one of the common propulsion system in a naval vessel. Since the diesel engine has torsional vibration caused by reciprocating motion of the mass and gas pressure force of the cylinder, high cycle torsional fatigue can be occurred. Therefore, ROK navy restricts the maximum stress of the propulsion shaft according to MIL G 17859D. In this paper, the root cause for the failure of the diesel engine and reduction gear connecting shaft occurred in typical naval vessel is investigated based on the measured bending and torsional moment according to MIL G 17859D procedure.
