The diesel engine is often a serious excitation source in ships. Both the varying cylinder gas forces and the reciprocating and rotating mass forces associated with the crank and the connecting rod mechanism produce ample possibilities for excitation of the engine structure itself, the shafting, the surrounding substructures as well as the hull girder. This paper presents a guide for optimization of excitation forces produced by the marine propulsion 2-stroke diesel engine. The computational program for predicting the excitation forces is developed and applied to 2-stroke in-line engines. The object function is defined as the work done by every cylinder excitation force which is related to the mode shape of the diesel engine system, especially in the torsional vibration of the shafting. As a practical application of the presented method. the crank angle of 7 cylinder 2-stroke engine is optimized to reduce torsional vibration stresses on the shafting. Compared with the regular firing angle, about 60 % of the 4th order torsional vibratory stress on the propeller shaft can be reduced by optimizing the crank angle irregularly. The usefulness of the presented optimization method is confirmed by the measurements.
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the behaviour of 56 reinforced concrete beams subjected to pure torsion. The reported results include the behaviour curves, the failure modes and the values of the pre-cracking torsional stiffness, the cracking and ultimate torsional moments and the corresponding twists. The influence of the volume of stirrups, the height to width ratios and the arrangement of longitudinal bars on the torsional behaviour is discussed. In order to describe the entire torsional behaviour of the tested beams, the combination of two different analytical models is used. The prediction of the elastic till the first cracking part is achieved using a smeared crack analysis for plain concrete in torsion, whereas for the description of the post-cracking response the softened truss model is used. A simple modification to the softened truss model to include the effect of confinement is also attempted. Calculated torsional behaviour of the tested beams and 21 beams available in the literature are compared with the experimental ones and a very good agreement is observed.

A nonlinear finite element method is presented to evaluate the torsional buckling moment and failure of composite laminated cylinders. For the progressive failure analysis, the complete unloading method is used based on the maximum stress failure criteria. An arc-length method is incorporated to trace the postbuckling equilibrium path. Present finite element method is verified by the existing experimental and analytical results. The results of the parametric study show that the torsional buckling moments are sensitive to the geometric change, but are not much affected by the lay-up angle. All cylinders tested numerically show the unstable torsional buckling, and therefore the torsional buckling always leads to the catastrophic failure.
To have a better understanding of the torsional mechanism and influencing factors of PC composite box-girder with corrugated steel webs, ultimate torsional strength of four specimens under pure torsion were analyzed with Model Test Method. Monotonic pure torsion acts on specimens by eccentric concentrated loading. The experimental results show that cracks form at an angle of $45^{\circ}$ to the member's longitudinal axis in the top and bottom concrete slabs. Longitudinal reinforcement located in the center of cross section contributes little to torsional capacity of the specimens. Torsional rigidity is proportional to shape parameter ${\eta}$ of corrugation and there is an increase in yielding torque and ultimate torque of specimens as the thickness of corrugated steel webs increases.
Objectives: This study compared the mechanical properties of various instruments for canal exploration and glide-path preparations. Materials and Methods: The buckling resistance, bending stiffness, ultimate torsional strength, and fracture angle under torsional load were compared for C+ file (CP, Dentsply Maillefer), M access K-file (MA, Dentsply Maillefer), Mani K-file (MN, Mani), and NiTiFlex K-file (NT, Dentsply Maillefer). The files of ISO size #15 and a shaft length of 25 mm were selected. For measuring buckling resistance (n = 10), the files were loaded in the axial direction of the shaft, and the maximum load was measured during the files' deflection. The files (n = 10) were fixed at 3 mm from the tip and then bent $45^{\circ}$ with respect to their long axis, while the bending force was recorded by a load cell. For measuring the torsional properties, the files (n = 10) were also fixed at 3 mm, and clockwise rotations (2 rpm) were applied to the files in a straight state. The torsional load and the distortion angle were recorded until the files succumbed to the torque. Results: The CP was shown to require the highest load to buckle and bend the files, and the NT showed the least. While MA and MN showed similar buckling resistances, MN showed higher bending stiffness than MA. The NT had the lowest bending stiffness and ultimate torsional strength (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The tested instruments showed different mechanical properties depending on the evaluated parameters. CP and NT files were revealed to be the stiffest and the most flexible instruments, respectively.
Molecular mechanics technique has been used for finding energy-minimized conformation to understand the mechanism of yielding of glassy polymers in atomistic level. As a model polymer, amor- phous isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was generated by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics methods. The stress-strain cone was successfully obtained by using molecular mechanics technique. The torsional angle distribution showed no significant change during extension, although the torsional angles of certain bonds in polymer backbone changed more largely than other bonds. No significant change in the van der Waals interaction is observed at yielding point, whereas the torsional angle energy starts to decrease at yield strain.

A driveline incorporating universal joints when driving through an angle can excite various components in a vehicle with second order excitation of torsional and bending vibrations, being transmitted either audibly(noise), or physically(vibration). For a certain range of vehicle dpeed noises can be radiated from the cab wall, in which resonances occur by the excitations transmitted from the driveline as a vibration source. In this paper, the excitation mechanism of cab noises is studied especially for the vehicle speed range of 65 .approx. 75 km/h through the simulation for torsional vibrations of the driveline and for bending vibrations of the cab of an 11 Ton grade Cargo Truck, and verified additionally by vibration and noise measurements. As a result, it is found that the uncomfortable noises in the cab are caused mainly by the abrupt increase of the joint angle of driveline near the axle differential resulted from the excessive clearance alignment of the leaf spring gate.

A circular CAV damper has been developed, based on the investigation of the pressure loss, and the flow-resisting moment by the damper blade. When a torsional spring is attached to the damper axle, and the setting angle is adjusted to around $82^{\circ}$, the volume rate across the damper is almost independent of the static pressure. Such a CAV characteristic appears at an opening angle between $40^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$, where the normalized moment decreases linearly with the angle. In addition, by adjusting the setting angle, the volume rate can be controlled to within 10% error, regardless of the pressure loss.

It is evident that torsional resistance of a reinforced concrete (RC) member is attributed to both concrete and steel reinforcement. However, recent structural design codes neglect the contribution of concrete because of cracking. This paper reports on the results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the torsional capacity of concrete beams reinforced only by longitudinal rebars without transverse reinforcement. The experimental investigation involves six specimens tested under pure torsion. Each specimen was made using a cast-in-place concrete with different amounts of longitudinal reinforcements. To create the torsional moment, an eccentric load was applied at the end of the beam whereas the other end was fixed against twist, vertical, and transverse displacement. The experimental results were also compared with the results obtained from the nonlinear finite element analysis performed in ANSYS. The outcomes showed a good agreement between experimental and numerical investigation, indicating the capability of numerical analysis in predicting the torsional capacity of RC beams. Both experimental and numerical results showed a considerable torsional post-cracking resistance in high twist angle in test specimen. This post-cracking resistance is neglected in torsional design of RC members. This strength could be considered in the design of RC members subjected to torsion forces, leading to a more economical and precise design.

In diesel engines, it is inevitable that the torsional vibration is produced by the fluctuation of engine torque. Therefore, it is necessary to establish preventive measures to diminish the torsional vibration. The sleeve spring type damper is one of the preventive measures for reducing the torsional vibration. In this study, 2-roll bending process was proposed to manufacture sleeve spring; The program to calculate the initial radius including springback effect was developed and the FEA method to analyze elasto-plastic problem was verified through analysis of 90 degree bending process. The elasto-plastic analysis of 2-roll bending process was carried out by the FEA method verified to set a new criterion, and the new process design parameter(contact angle) in the 2-roll bending process was proposed.
