The torque ripple of switched reluctance motors (SRMs) is the main disadvantage that limits the industrial application of these motors. Although several methods for smooth-toque operation (STO) have been proposed, STO works well only within a certain torque and speed range because of the constraints of the supply voltage and peak current. Based on previous work that sought to expand the STO range, a scheme is developed in this study to determine the maximum smooth torque range at each speed. The relationship between the maximum smooth torque and speed is defined as the smooth torque speed characteristics (STSC), a concept similar to torque speed characteristics (TSC). STSC can be utilized to evaluate torque utilization by comparing it with TSC. Thus, the concept benefits the special design of SRMs, especially for the generation of smooth torque. Furthermore, the torque sharing function (TSF) derived from the proposed method can be applied to STO, which produces a higher smooth torque over a wider speed range in contrast to four typical TSFs. TSimulation and experimental results verify the proposed method.

To monitor the torque of an induction motor using current, rotating speed has been measured and used to calculate the slip angular velocity. Additional sensor, however, can cause extra expense and trouble. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to monitor the torque of vector controlled induction motor without any speed measuring sensor. Only stator current is measured to estimate the magnetizing current which is used to calculate flux linkage, rotor velocity and motor torque. Graphical programming is used to implement the suggested algorithm and to monitor the torque of an induction motor in real time. To solve the fluctuation problem of estimated torque caused from instantly varying rotating speed of an induction motor, the rotating speed is reconstructed based on the measured current signals. From several experiments, the proposed method shows a good estimation of the motor torque under the normal rotational speed.
SRMs(Switched Reluctance Motors) are much interested in high speed applications due to the mechanical robustness, simple structure and high efficiency. In spite of many advantages of SRMs, a higher torque ripple discourages the adoption of SRMs in a high speed application. This paper presents a simple negative torque of tail current compensation scheme using a modified TSF(Torque Sharing Function) for the high speed SRMs. Because of the short commutation in the high speed region, the negative torque from the tail current makes the high torque ripple. In order to reduce and compensate the negative torque from tail current, the proposed control scheme produces an additional compensating torque with a reference torque in the active phase winding. And the compensating value is dependent on the tail current of the inactive phase winding. Furthermore, the switching signals of the outgoing phase are fully turned off to restrict the extended tail current, and the torque error of the outgoing phase is compensated by the incoming phase. The proposed modified TSF control scheme is verified by the computer simulations with 30,000[rpm] high speed 4/2 SRM. The simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) has periodic torque ripple from the cogging torque and load conditions. This paper proposes the modified PID speed controller to reduce the speed ripple of the PMSM. The proposed modified PID controller uses a selective D(Differential) control term according to the speed error and the differential of the speed error. The proposed speed controller produces an additional torque reference such as torque compensator based on PI controller according to the speed error and the differential of the speed error, and it can reduce the vibration of the conventional D-control term with reduced speed ripple. Since the additional torque reference of the proposed speed controller is changed by the sign of the speed error and the differential of the speed error, a simple function to determine the sign of the error is used to produce the compensated torque. The proposed control scheme is verified by the computer simulation and the experiments.
Applying a periodic load torque to an AC motor generates a ripple, which is synchronized to the frequency of the periodic load torque, at the speed of the motor. Consequently, numerous studies have focused on reducing the speed ripple caused by the load torque. However, it is difficult to reduce the speed ripple when there is a time delay in acquiring speed information, such as that from a sensorless control. Therefore, we propose a speed control method for reducing speed ripples caused by a periodic load torque when there is a time delay in acquiring the speed information. The proposed method is verified by conducting simulations using the Simulink program from MATLAB, and by applying the method to an actual motor in which speed ripples occur due to a periodic load torque that is synchronized with the speed of the motor.
Torque control methods of wind turbine are mainly classified into two methods: torque-mode and speed-mode methods. The traditional torque-mode method, in which generator torque proportional to square of generator speed is determined, has been chosen in many wind turbines but its response is slower as they are larger in multi-MW size. Torque control methods based on both speed-mode and torque-mode can be used to make response of wind turbine faster. In this paper, two torque control methods based on the traditional torque-mode method are applied to a 2.75 MW wind turbine. It is shown through some simulation results for real turbulence wind speeds that torque control method based on torque-mode has the merit of reducing fluctuations of generated power than PI controller based on speed-mode.

In this paper, The torque of CNC spindle motor during machining is estimated without speed measuring sensor. The CNC spindle system is divided into two parts, the induction spindle motor part and mechanical part. In mechanical part the variation of the frictional force due to the increment of the cutting torque and the effect of damping coefficient is investigated. Damping coefficient is found to be a function of spindle speed and not influenced by the weight of the load, while frictional force is a function of both the cutting torque and spindle speed. Experimental formulars are drawn for damping coefficient as a function of spindle speed and frictional force as a function of both cutting torque and spindle speed respectively, to estimate the cutting torque accurately. Graphical programming is used to implement the suggested algorithm, to monitor the torque of an induction motor in real time. Torque of the spindle induction motor is well monitored with 3% error range under various cutting conditions.

Given their low cost, single rolling piston compressors (SRPC) are utilized in low-power room air-conditioning systems. The SRPC cycle is composed of one compression and discharge process per mechanical rotation. The load torque is high during the compression process of the refrigerants and low during the discharge process of the refrigerants. This load torque variation induces a speed ripple and severe vibration, which cause fatigue failures in the pipes and compressor parts, particularly under low-speed conditions. To reduce the vibration, the compressor usually operates at a high-speed range, where the rotor and piston inertia reduce the vibration. At a low speed, a predefined feed-forward load torque compensator is used to minimize the speed ripple and vibration. However, given that the load torque varies with temperature, pressure, and speed, a predefined load torque table based on one operating condition is not appropriate. This study proposes an online load torque compensator for SRPC. The proposed method utilizes the speed ripple as a load torque ripple factor. The speed ripple is transformed into a frequency domain and compensates each frequency harmonic term in an independent feed-forward manner. Experimental results are presented to verify the proposed method.

For permanent magnet brushless DC motors used for high speed fuel pumps, torque ripple is an important origin of vibration, acoustic noise and speed fluctuation. In this paper, the output torque profile of a PM motor with one phase energized is decomposed into the commutation torque, the reluctance torque and the armature reaction torque according to their source origins. It verifies that the output torque profile is qualitatively equivalent to the BEMF profile for low reluctance motors. This paper discusses the effect of magnet pole shaping and magnet arc length on the output torque and torque ripple. A magnet edge shaping is proposed to design a trapezoidal BEMF motor without torque ripple, with minimal sacrifice of the maximum output torque.
Aerodynamic torque of wind turbine has nonlinear properties. Nonlinearity of aerodynamic torque is very important in wind turbine in the aspect of control. The traditional torque control method using optimal mode gain has been applied in many wind turbines but its response is slower as wind turbine size is larger. In this paper, a torque control method using a nonlinear parameter of rotor speed among nonlinear properties of aerodynamic torque. Simulink model is implemented to obtain the nonlinear parameter of rotor speed and numerical simulations for a 2MW wind turbine are carried out and simulation results for the traditional and proposed torque control methods are compared.
