  • Application of electric wheelchair, sort of wheelchair which is playing important role in transporting patients and old people, has been increasing. In this study, we designed the electric wheelchairs' driving system. Using the multi-step gear, the driving system can get great power, even though the small capacity of motors. First, we designed the multi-step gear, test its bending strength and contact strength, as well as verified its performance. We installed 'B-type electric brake(Multiple plate clutch, Anti-magnetization) in same axle of the driving system, so it is possible to stop under huge torque and small size. Using this driving system of the multi-step gear which we designed, it's possible to improve driving gear efficiency 30% up and create the high-competitive electric wheelchair. And, it is easy to repair and control.

  • Synthetic water-based metal-cutting fluids are increasingly popular in the metal-working industry because of its environmental friendliness. The propose of this study is to investigate the synergistic effect of combining polyethylene glycol and common fatty acid in formulating a metal-cutting fluid. The tested metals were aluminum, copper and steel, and the test was performed with a modified drilling machine. From the study, it was found that there existed some synergistic effects on the drilling efficiency of the metals to decrease of cutting time, cutting energy, torque as well as the smoothness of surface depended on the formulation ratio of the two fluids.

  • Recently, a project to build a carbon zero island with no carbon emissions has been carried out by replacing diesel generators with renewable energy sources in island areas where diesel generators supplied local loads as independent systems. To minimize damage to the lives of islanders, low noise wind generators should be installed by adjusting the rated speed. In islands with low loads, wind turbines that are more efficient than medium-sized wind turbines should be installed. In this study, the generator field analysis and characteristics were analyzed to develop 230 kW-class low wind medium-wind turbine technology. The electromagnetic field analysis program used Maxwell. As a result, the cogging torque was reduced, and the initial maneuver wind speed and loss value were lowered. Hence, the output amount was increased with high efficiency.

  • Present combustion engines have reached almost at the limit of development due to the fundamental structural problems. This study was carried out to propose a new concept internal combustion engine which has great potential advantages to the conventional engines. Proposed new concept engine is a kind of rotary engine. A rotor is rotating concentrically in a cylinder which is divided into two partitioning valves. and it makes four compartments in the cylinder. The volumes of each of four compartments are changing continuously with the rotor movement, and performs the functions of intake, compression. expansion and exhaust simultaneously. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. Expected theoretical thermal efficiency is 44.9 percent at the condition of 1000rpm and compression ratio of 8.0. which is almost the same as that of the conventional engines. i.e., piston and Wankel rotary engine. 2. The new concept engine has 2. working strokes in every revolution. Therefore. the new concept engine can reduce the specific weight and volume than four-stroke piston engine. 3. The torque variation is very small. therefore minimal noise and vibration are expectable. 4. The new concept engine can reduce mechanical energy loss than piston engine because neither crank mechanism nor eccentrical motion exists.

  • This is a fundamental study to develop a bio-gas utilization technology using livestock manure. Especially, this study was carried out to develop an engine using bio-gas. A bio-gas engine was designed and manufactured by modification of a diesel engine of 3 cylinders powering 13.31 kW/2800 rpm, changing the fuel supplying system fit for bio-gas. The result showed that, when the Air/Fuel ratio was controlled with fixed spark timing, the power of biogas-fueled engine is about $10.6{\~}14.6\%$ lower then that of LNG-fueled engine because of low volumetric efficiency. The engine output and torque was $11.85{\~}13.3$ kW, $39.5{\~}40.8\;N{\cdot}m$, respectively at the engine speed of 2600 rpm. Bio-gas consumption rate was 260.20 g/kW/hr, 315.20 g/kW/hr in engine speed or 1000 rpm, 2800 rpm, respectively.

  • This paper describes control algorithm and control structure of vehicle control unit for range-extended electric vehicle equipped with engine-generator system, and specially presents methods which determine optimal operating points and decreases a vibration or a shock for operating the engine-generating system. The vehicle control algorithm is consisted of several parts which are sequence control, calculation of wheel demand torque, determination of operating points, and management of operating points and so vehicle controller has be made possible to efficiently manage calibration parameters. The control algorithm is evaluated by driving test modes, launching performance and operating engine-generator system and so on. In conclusion, this paper present methods for extending a mileage, improving a launching performance and reducing vibration or shock when the engine-generating system is starting or is stopping.

  • According to the increasing concern on the global environment, the $CO_2$ regulation has been discussed including automobile emission regulation. In order to cope with this rapid changing circumstances, the development of an ultra low emission and super fuel economy automobile is essential. Direct injection LPG engine is the one of the possible future engine to maximize the engine efficiency. This experimental study for the development of direct injection LPG engine technology is promoted with two parts; spray characteristics of high pressure swirl injector, and performance characteristics of direct injection LPG engine. Engine characteristics according to the fuel was analyzed in order to establish stratified combustion technology for LPG engine by using the DISI engine. In the engine experiment, control system was manufactured for gasoline and LPG fuel. The engine was modified 2,000 cc GDI engine (fuel supply device, fuel injection device). Through this experiment, engine operating condition, engine speed and spark timing (MBT), fuel injection position, and fuel rate were investigated.

The objective of this study is experimentally estimating the performance of micro-scale Pelton turbine for PRO pilot plant. Especially the performance characteristics with variations of jet nozzle diameter of Pelton turbine are discussed in detail. In order to do this, lab scale test rig of Pelton turbine was made for performance test, which includes water tank, Pelton wheel with buckets, jet nozzle and torque brake and so on. The parameter effects related on Pelton turbine's efficiency were investigated and discussed on the influence of the variations of load and speed ratio.

  • The viscosity drive method by the wheel which is widely used in the conventional railway systems needs a large friction force between the wheel and the guide-rail, which brings on a thrust force for a quick acceleration and a high-speed travelling. In addition, the viscosity drive method needs an increase of the vehicle weight for a large friction force. However, a maglev train is possible to be driven by the electro-magnet instead of the wheel, which produces a levitation and thrust force without any contact. In general, low-speed maglev train uses a linear induction motor(LIM) for propulsion that is operated under 300[km/h] due to the power-collecting and end-effect problems of LIM. In case of high-speed maglev train, a linear synchronous motor(LSM) is more suitable than LIM because of a high-efficiency and high-output properties. LSM has a driving principle as same as a conventional rotary synchronous motor(RSM), and the torque of RSM becomes the thrust force of LSM. A conventional LSM has relatively large air-gap compared with a conventional RSM. So, it must be achieved a design that is considered normal force by finite-asymmetric structure, end-effect on the entry and exit part, and support structure of a moving part. Therefore, in this research, authors accomplish a conceptualizing and basic design of a small-scaled LSM, and characteristics analysis using FEM.

  • This rape deals with the experimental and theoretical investigations on the aerodynamic performance of the Wells turbine. The two-dimensional cascade theory is used to estimate the thrust and torque of turbine, and finally to yield an efficiency of turbine. The turbine is assumed to rotate with a constant rotational speed in a sinusoidally varying unsteady flow field. Experimental approach is made in a wave simulator, producing a sinusoidally reciprocating air flow corresponding to the wave motion in an Oscillating Water Column(OWC) chamber. Performance data of turbine measured at various operating conditions are analyzed and compared to numerical results in order to understand the overall features of a Wells turbine.
