This paper is concerned with a computational approach for topology optimization of geometrically nonlinear structures following specific load-displacement trajectories. In our previous works, attention was paid to stabilize topology optimization involving large displacement and a method called the element connectivity parameterization was developed. Here, we aimed to extend the element connectivity parameterization method to find an optimal geometrically nonlinear structure yielding a specific load-displacement trajectory. In contrast to designing a stiffest structure, the trajectory design problem requires special consideration in topology optimization formulation and solution procedure. Some numerical problems were considered to test the developed element connectivity parameterization based formulation.
The topology processor uses the status of circuit breakers as input. It operates on the bus section connectivity data, which is stored in the data base, to determine the bus/branch topology of the network. This output of the topology processor forms part of the input to the state estimation or dispatcher power flow. This paper describes the development of the topology processor using matrix structure.
Network topology visualization has been studied a lot since the past and developed with many tools. The network topology has strength in understanding the overall structure of a network physically and is useful for understanding data flow between nodes logically. Although there are existing tools, not many can be utilized efficiently while using the general network node data structure and express the topology similar to the actual network structure. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to visualize topology using only connection information of network nodes. The method finds the central node by using the centrality, the influence of nodes in the network, and visualizes the topology by dynamically segmenting all nodes and placing network nodes in 3D space using the weight of the child node. It is a straightforward method, yet it effectively visualizes in the form of an actual network structure.
In this paper, a density based topology optimization is proposed for generating of supports required in additive manufacturing to maintain the overhanging regions of main structures during layer by layer fabrication process. For this purpose, isogeometric analysis method is employed to model geometry and structural analysis of main and support structures. In order to model the problem two cases are investigated. In the first case, design domain of supports can easily be separated from the main structure by using distinct isogeometric patches. The second case happens when the main structure itself is optimized by using topology optimization and the supports should be designed in the voids of optimum layout. In this case, in order to avoid boundary identification and re-meshing process for separating design domain of supports from main structure, a parameterization technique is proposed to identify the design domain of supports. To achieve this, two density functions are defined over the entire domain to describe the main structure and supporting areas. On the other hand, since supports are under gravity loads while main structure and its stiffness is not completed during manufacturing process, in the proposed method, stiffness of the main structure is considered to be trivial and the gravity loads are also naturally applied to design support structures. By doing so, the results show reasonable supports are created to protect, continuously, overhanging surfaces of the main structure. Several examples are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method and compare the results with literature.
Seismic analysis for steel frame structure with brace configuration using topology optimization based on truss-like material model is studied. The initial design domain for topology optimization is determined according to original steel frame structure and filled with truss-like members. Hence the initial truss-like continuum is established. The densities and orientation of truss-like members at any point are taken as design variables in finite element analysis. The topology optimization problem of least-weight truss-like continuum with stress constraints is solved. The orientations and densities of members in truss-like continuum are optimized and updated by fully-stressed criterion in every iteration. The optimized truss-like continuum is founded after finite element analysis is finished. The optimal bracing system is established based on optimized truss-like continuum without numerical instability. Seismic performance for steel frame structures is derived using dynamic time-history analysis. A numerical example shows the advantage for frame structures with brace configuration using topology optimization in seismic performance.
The purpose of this study is to show that the topology is closely related to some subjects learned in school mathematics and then to give motivations for learning of the topology. To do this, it is showed that the topology is an abstracted device that deal with structure of limit and continuity introduced in school mathematics. This study took a literature study. The results of this study are as follows. First, the formal definition of general topology to structure open sets was examined. The nearness relation together with the closure operation was introduced and used to characterize for construction of general topology. Second, as definitions for continuity of function, we considered the intuitive definition, definition, structured definitions using open intervals and definition using open sets and then we investigated their roles. We also examined equivalent definition using the nearness relation which is helpful to understand continuity of function. Third, the sequence and its limit are treated in terms of continuous functions having the set of natural numbers and its extended set as domains. From these, it can be concluded that the convergence of sequence and the continuity of function are identified as functions that preserve the nearness relation and that the topology is a specialized tool for dealing with convergence and continuity.
This study presents a novel step-up switched capacitor multilevel inverter (SCMLI) structure. The proposed structure comprises 2 unequal DC voltage sources, 4 capacitors, and 14 unidirectional power switches. It can synthesize 21 output voltage levels. The important features of the proposed topology are its self-voltage boosting and inherent capacitor voltage balancing capabilities. Furthermore, a cascaded structure of the proposed SCMLI with an asymmetric DC voltage source configuration is presented. The proposed topology and its cascaded structure are compared with conventional and other recently developed topologies in terms of different aspects, such as the required components to produce a specific number of output voltage levels, the total standing voltage (TSV) and peak inverse voltage of the structure, and the maximum number of switches in the conducting path. Furthermore, a cost function is developed to verify the cost-effectiveness of the proposed topology with respect to other topologies. The TSV of the proposed topology is significantly lower than those of other topologies. Moreover, the developed topology is cost-effective compared with other topologies. A detailed operating principle, power loss analysis, and selection procedure for switched capacitors are presented for the proposed SCMLI structure. Extensive simulation and experimental studies of a 21-level inverter structure prove the effectiveness and merits of the proposed SCMLI.

This paper suggests a material mixing method to mix several materials in a structure. This method is based on ESO(Evolutionary Structural Optimization), which has been used to optimize topology of only one material structure. In this study, two criterions for material transformation and element removal are implemented for mixing several materials in a structure. Optimal topology for a multiple material structure can be obtained through repetitive application of the two criterions at each iteration. Two practical design examples of a short cantilever are presented to illustrate validity of the suggested material mixing method. It is found that the suggested method works very well and a multiple material structure has more stiffness than one material structure has under the same mass.

Topology optimization is used for determining the best layout of structural components to achieve predetermined performance goals. In the present study, we consider that the objective function is to maximize the natural frequency of the structure for a designated mode and the constraint function is to constrain a total material usage. In this paper, using a topology optimization technique based on the homogenized material and the chessboard prevention strategy, we obtain the optimal layout and the reinforcement of an elastic structure. Several examples are presented to show the ability of the topology optimization technique used in this paper to deal with an optimal layout problem for a free vibration structure.

This paper proposes a method for shape optimization of trusses. The potential savings offered by shape optimization will certainly be more significant than those resulting from fixed-geometry optimization. On the other hand, difficulties associated with topology and geometry optimization are still in existence. Even with a known topology, the geometry optimization problem is still a difficult task. An evolutionary procedure to be adopted and improved in this work, however, offers a means to achieve optimization in topology and geometry together. A plane truss structure is modelled within a specified domain and made to include a great number of nodes and members. Then the structure is analyzed and those members with stresses below a certain level are progressively eliminated from the structural system In this manner the structure evolves into a truss with a better topology and geometry by removing less important parts. Through the worked examples, we can see that the method presented in this Paper shows much promise.
