  • This study is to design a Semantic Navigation Retrieval System for Oriental Medicine Articles based on a XTM so that people can search and use them more effectively than before. Keywords extracted from articles are categorized 4 topics : herbs, prescription, disease, and action. Keywords analysis Ontology is modeled based on 4 topics and their relations, and then represented Topic maps. Next, Article analysis Ontology is consist of title, author, keywords, abstracts and organization Topics from metadata. Keywords and Article analysis Ontology were integrated through Keywords Topic. Korean Medical Article Retrieval System is optimistic in terms on search results supporting semantic navigation in the information service aspects and easier accessibility because all related information are semantically connected with each different DBs.

  • Ontology mapping is the task of finding semantic correspondences between two ontologies. In order to improve the effectiveness of ontology mapping, we need to consider the characteristics and constraints of data models used for implementing ontologies. Earlier research on ontology mapping, however, has proven to be inefficient because the approach should transform input ontologies into graphs and take into account all the nodes and edges of the graphs, which ended up requiring a great amount of processing time. In this paper, we propose a multi-strategic mapping approach to find correspondences between ontologies based on the syntactic or semantic characteristics and constraints of the topic maps. Our multi-strategic mapping approach includes a topic name-based mapping, a topic property-based mapping, a hierarchy-based mapping, and an association-based mapping approach. And it also uses a hybrid method in which a combined similarity is derived from the results of individual mapping approaches. In addition, we don't need to generate a cross-pair of all topics from the ontologies because unmatched pairs of topics can be removed by characteristics and constraints of the topic maps. For our experiments, we used oriental philosophy ontologies, western philosophy ontologies, Yahoo western philosophy dictionary, and Yahoo german literature dictionary as input ontologies. Our experiments show that the automatically generated mapping results conform to the outputs generated manually by domain experts, which is very promising for further work.

  • This study analyzed research trends in the field of ecological research. Data were collected based on a keyword search of the SCI, SSCI, and A&HCI databases from January 2002 to September 2022. The seven keywords, including biodiversity, ecology, ecotourism, species, climate change, ecosystem, restoration, wildlife, were recommended by ecological research experts. Word clouds were created for each of the searched keywords, and topic map analysis was performed. Topic map analysis using biodiversity, climate change, ecology, ecosystem, and restoration each generated 10 topics; topic maps analysis using the ecotourism keyword generated 5 topics; and topic map analysis using the wildlife keyword generated 4 topics. Each topic contained six keywords.

  • Different from other ontology languages, TopicMap is capable of integrating numerous amount of heterogenous information resources using the locational information without any information transformation. Although many conventional editors have been developed for topic maps, they are standalone-type only for writing XTM documents. As a result, these tools request too much time for handling large-scale data and provoke practical problems to integrate with legacy systems which are mostly based on relational database. In this paper, we model a large-scale topic map structure based on XTM 1.0 into RDB structure to minimize the processing time and build up the ontology in legacy systems. We implement a topic map platform called X-TOP that can enhance the efficiency of ontology construction and provide interoperability between XTM documents and database. Moreover, we can use conventional SQL tools and other application development tools for topic map construction in X-TOP. The X-TOP is implemented to have 3-tier architecture to support flexible user interfaces and diverse DBMS. This paper shows the usability of X-TOP by means of the comparison with conventional tools and the application to healthcare cancer ontology management.

  • Traditional keyword-based searching methods suffer from low accuracy and high complexity due to the rapid growth in the amount of information. Accordingly, many researchers attempt to implement a so-called semantic search which is based on the semantics of the user's query. Semantic information can be described using a semantic modeling language, such as Topic Map. In this paper, we propose a new method to map a topic map to a traditional Relational Database (RDB) without any information loss. Although there have been a few attempts to map topic maps to RDB, they have paid scant attention to handling multi-role topics. In this paper, we propose a new storage structure to map multi-role topics to traditional RDB. The proposed structure consists of a mapping table, role tables, and content tables. Additionally, we devise a query translator to convert a user's query to one appropriate to the proposed structure.

  • The Topic Maps paradigm allows people and organizations to integrate and merge heterogeneous products classification systems such as UNSPSC and HS. Merging their product ontologies could combine information about classification scheme for products. We analyzed two product classification schemes for UML modeling and developed an integrated TM for watches . Examples in XTM syntax show how UNSPSC and HS can be integrated by merging their ontology.

  • The Semantic Web introduces the next generation of the Web by establishing a semantic layer of machine-understandable data to enable machines (i.e intelligent agents) retrieve more relevant information and execute automated web services using semantic information. Ontology-related technologies are very important to evolve the World Wide Web of today into the Semantic Web in representation and share of semantic data. In this paper, we proposed and implemented the efficient ontology management system, K-Box, which constructs and manages ontologies using topic maps. We can use K-Box system to construct, store and retrieve ontologies. K-Box system has several components: Topicmap Factory, Topicmap Provider, Topicmap Query Processor, Topicmap Object Wrapper, Topicmap Cache Manager, Topicmap Storage Wrapper.

  • e-Transformation of an enterprise requires the collaboration of business processes to be suited to the business participants' purpose. To realize this collaboration, business processes should be implemented as components and the system developers could be able to reuse the components for their specific purpose. The first step of this collaboration is the discovery of exact components for business processes. A dilemma, however, is the fact that there are thousands or even millions of business processes which vary from one enterprise to another. Moreover, business processes could be decomposed into multiple levels of semantics and classified into several process areas. In general, discovery of exact business processes requires understanding of widely adopted classification schemes such as CBPC, OAGIS, or SCOR. To cope with this obstacle, business process metadata should be defined and managed regardless of specific classification schemes to support effective discovery and reuse of business processes components. In this paper, a methodology to discover business process components published in different semantic levels is proposed. The proposed methodology represents the metadata of business process components as topic maps stored in a registry and utilizes the powerful features of topic maps for process discovery. TM4J, an open-source topic map engine, is modified to support concept matching and navigation. With the implemented tool, application system developers can discover and publish the business process components effectively.

  • This study is intended for implementing the system environment that can help integrate and retrieve various types of data in real-time by providing semantic interoperability among distributed heterogeneous information systems. The semantic interoperability is made possible by providing a TMDR(Topicmaps Metadata Registry), a set of ontologies. TMDR, which has been made by combining MDR(MetaData Registry) and TopicMaps and storing them in the database, is able to generate distributed query and provide efficient knowledge. MDR is a metadata management technique for distributed data management. TopicMaps is an ontology representation technique that takes into consideration the hierarchy and association for accessing knowledge data. We have created TMDR, a kind of ontology, that is fit for any system and able to detect and resolve semantic conflicts on the level of data and schema. With this system we propose a query-processing technique to integrate and access heterogeneous information sources. Unlike existing retrieval methods this makes possible efficient retrieval and reasoning by providing association focusing on subjects.
