64 dental students who had brushed their teeth with scrubbing method, using 'W' dentifirice for a long lime, were made to practise either scrubbing or Bass method. using one of the 'W','X','Y','Z' toothpaste instead of only 'W' paste for recent 3 weeks. Dental plaque on the teeth of every students were carefully examined compared the results. The simplified oral hygiene index was applied for this purpose and following conclusions were achieved. 1) The Scrubbing method of tooth-paste 'X', Bass method of tooth-paste 'X', and the Bass method of tooth-paste 'Z' had an obvious effect to inhibition of accumulation of plaque. 2) In the tooth brushing method, the scrubbing and Bass are both effective in reducing the plaque accumulation 3) The tooth paste 'X' has the most effectiveness in reducing the plaque accumulation among four tooth pastes 4) The difference in the value of plaque index between the tooth pastes, 'W' and 'X' was only significant statisticallay
Purpose: The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of hydroxyapatite dental paste on tooth hypersensitivity compared to other materials. Results: 1. In patient-performed VAS, there were significant differences reducing of tooth hypersensitivity between general fluoride toothpaste and hydroxyapatite toothpaste. 2. In operator-performed VAS(ice test), there were significant differences reducing of tooth hypersensitivity among each group, between general fluoride toothpaste and hydroxyapatite toothpaste and between general fluoride toothpaste and strontium fluoride toothpaste. Conclusion: In conclusion, hydroxyapatite toothpaste can be applied for control of tooth hypersensitivity.
Human teeth vary widely in color. Practitioner and patients are concerned with preventing and correcting discolored or dark teeth to achieve and maintain stain-free, white teeth. Tooth brushing cannot alter tooth color but it can remove adhering films and stains. The esthetics of natural dentition can be improved by bleaching and this process can be applied to intrinsically and extrinsically stained teeth. The need for a brighter, more attractive smile has made rapid growth in the market for tooth whiteners. There is no doubt these products work as whiteners, at least on mild to moderate stains, but the safety of these products are unclear. In this experiment, the effect of tooth whitener application on the color and microhardness of extracted human enamel was measured. RMS, RMT and NWT were used as tooth whiteners, and tooth paste(ETQ) and hydrogen peroxide solution(HPO) were used as controls. 35 caries-free extracted human molars were embedded and polished with the exposed enamel diameter of 4 mm. The tooth whiteners and control agents were applied according to the manufacturers' instructions or clinically simulated procedures for eight weeks, and measurements were repeated every two weeks. Value(L*) difference was measured using Differential Colorimeter(Model TC-6FX, Denshoku Co., Japan), and microhardness was measured using microhardness tester(Mitsuzawa Seiki Co., Japan). The results were as follows; 1. After application of agents for eight weeks, the Vickers hardness increased significantly in the ETQ, RMS and RMT application group(p〈0.01), and that decreased significantly in NWT application group(p〈0.01), but in HPO application group there was no significant change. The change in microhardness was greatest in NWT application group(p〈0.01). 2. After application of tooth whiteners and controls for eight weeks, the value change of toothpaste application group was significantly lower than those of other agents groups(p〈0.01), and there was no significant difference in value(L*) change among tooth whitener groups(p〉0.01). 3. The application of tooth paste and paste type tooth whitener made gradual value change, but hydrogen peroxide gel type tooth whitener and hydrogen peroxide solution made rapid value change during initial application period.
Purpose: To examine the effect of tooth-brushing education on the oral health of preschoolers. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was used. Two kindergartens were selected and 39 preschoolers from one kindergarten were assigned to the experimental group with tooth-brushing education and 39 from the other kindergarten to the control group. The tooth-brushing education program included 1 session on oral health education, individual tooth-brushing instruction for 1 week and supervised tooth-brushing after lunch for 4 weeks. Oral health behavior including use of tooth paste, tooth-brushing time and method of tooth-brushing, plague, streptococcus mutans, lactobacillus and dental caries were measured before and after the education. Fisher's exact test, t-test and paired t-test with the Window SAS 9.1 program were used to analyze the data. Results: A significant increase in the use of tooth paste, tooth-brushing time and the practice of correct tooth-brushing and a decrease in plague and development of dental caries were observed in the experimental group. Conclusion: This tooth-brushing education was partially effective in improving oral health of preschoolers.
Purpose : This study was performed to evaluate the healing response around the root perforation restorative material. Materials and Methods : Four beagle dogs were used for experimental study. Endodontic treatment was performed at four maxillary premolars and artificial perforation was formed at furcation area of pulp chamber. Canal was filled with gutta percha cone and the perforation was sealed with MTA at group 1. At group 2, canal was filled and the perforation was sealed with dentin paste. Tooth paste was fabricated using extracted human teeth. Histologic examination of furcation area was performed 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after experiment. Results : New trabecular bone formation was observed around the MTA and tooth paste. Lamellar bone was observed as time is over. There were no inflammatory reaction in both groups. Conclusion : There is a possibility which endodontic filling material can be developed using extracted teeth.
Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess coronal discoloration induced by the following intracanal medicaments: calcium hydroxide (CH), a mixture of CH paste and chlorhexidine gel (CH/CHX), and triple antibiotic paste (3Mix). Materials and Methods: Seventy extracted single-canal teeth were selected. Access cavities were prepared and each canal was instrumented with a rotary ProTaper system. The specimens were randomly assigned to CH, CH/CHX, and 3Mix paste experimental groups (n = 20 each) or a control group (n = 10). Each experimental group was randomly divided into 2 subgroups (A and B). In subgroup A, medicaments were only applied to the root canals, while in subgroup B, the root canals were completely filled with medicaments and a cotton pellet dipped in medicament was also placed in the pulp chamber. Spectrophotometric readings were obtained from the mid-buccal surface of the tooth crowns immediately after placing the medicaments (T1) and at 1 week (T2), 1 month (T3), and 3 months (T4) after filling. The ${\Delta}E$ was then calculated. Data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), 3-way ANOVA, and the $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ post hoc test. Results: The greatest color change (${\Delta}E$) was observed at 3 months (p < 0.0001) and in 3Mix subgroup B (p = 0.0057). No significant color change occurred in the CH (p = 0.7865) or CH/CHX (p = 0.1367) groups over time, but the 3Mix group showed a significant ${\Delta}E$ (p = 0.0164). Conclusion: Intracanal medicaments may induce tooth discoloration. Use of 3Mix must be short and it must be carefully applied only to the root canals; the access cavity should be thoroughly cleaned afterwards.
PURPOSE. The aim was to study the masking ability of high-translucency monolithic zirconia and provide guidance in selecting resin luting cements in order to mask discolored substrates. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 160 high-translucency zirconia specimens were divided into 32 groups depending on their thickness and shades. Using five shades of try-in paste, the specimens were luted onto the substrates (Co-Cr, precious-metal, opaque porcelain-sintered Co-Cr, opaque porcelain-sintered precious-metal, and 5M3-shade zirconia). All CIELAB color parameters were measured and statistically analyzed. RESULTS. Zirconia shade and thickness and try-in paste shade affected CIELAB color parameters (P=.000) in different substrates groups, and there were interactions among these factors (P=.000). All five try-in paste shades can be chosen to achieve ${\Delta}E$ values of zirconia with 1.2 - 1.5 mm for masking dark-tooth-like 5M3-shade and zirconia with 1.5 mm for masking precious-metal groups < 2.6. Only suitable try-in paste shades were used, can ${\Delta}E$ values that less than 2.6 be achieved when applied translucent monolithic zirconia with 0.7-1.0 mm for masking dark-tooth-like 5M3-shade and zirconia with 0.7 - 1.2 mm for masking precious-metal groups. CONCLUSION. Choosing suitable resin cement shades is necessary for high-translucency monolithic zirconia to achieve ideal masking ability (${\Delta}E$ < 2.6) on the dark-tooth.

It is a gel type high functional toothpaste containing vitamin C, E, propolis extract and the rest of herb with a nanoemulsion state. Vitamin C, E is known as the material with an eminent anti-oxidation effect. Propolis is known as the material with an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect. We have been succeeding in making nanoemulsion of vitamin C, E and propolis through the high pressure homogenizer using stable oil and lecithin and the gel type high functional tooth paste were made from nanoemulsion of vitamin C, E and propolis. We observed the process of wound protecting effect and cure effect for a wound of soft tissue, gingival tissue and mucous membrane showing ulcer and inflammation in oral cavity after applying a gel type high functional toothpaste to patient. As a result, the wound were healed very fast and any side effects were not shown. We confirmed that a gel type high functional toothpaste with nanoemulsion of vitamin C, E and propolis extract has good effect not only for wound healing but also for treatment of ulcer-like lesion in oral cavity. So we report our cases with review of literatures.
Dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) is the most widely-used dentifrice abrasive in non-therapeutic tooth-paste requiring, low abrasive level, high stability and excellent compatibility with other formulation ingredients. One of the difficulties encountered in the use of this material in tooth-paste is that unless storage of the product is maintained at a relative low temperature there is a distinct tendency to lose water of crystallization. Another difficulty which has been encountered is that there is a tendency for the product to become lumpy. Various means have been proposed for increasing the stability and overcoming the lumping tendency, most of which means comprise the addition of stabilizing agent. But there is not any report about the relationships between the mechanism of dehydration, physical properties, structure and manufacturing condition. In this experiment, DCPD were manufactured by methods of Moss' patent, its two varied and J.P.VIII, these were studied by means of stability test, IR spectra, and DTA. According to the manufacturing conditions, DCPD has different physical properties and structures, i. e., monoclinic system of low drying temperature, triclinic system of high drying temperature. Dehydration of DCPD may be supposed one step debydration at about $100^{\circ}$ and it finaly converts to ${\gamma}-pyrophosphate$ at about $465^{\circ}$ and if the drying temperature is high it becomes DCP anhydrous. DCPD made by Moss' patent is thought of the best polishing agent of tooth-paste.
