When a tooth shows discoloration and does not respond to the cold test or electric pulp test (EPT) after a traumatic injury, its diagnosis can be even more difficult due to the lack of proper diagnostic methods to evaluate its vitality. In these case reports, we hope to demonstrate that ultrasound Doppler might be successfully used to evaluate the vitality of the tooth after trauma, and help reduce unnecessary endodontic treatments. In all three of the present cases, the teeth were discolored after traumatic injuries and showed negative responses to the cold test and EPT. However, they showed distinctive vital reactions in the ultrasound Doppler test during the whole observation period. In the first case, the tooth color returned to normal, and the tooth showed a positive response to the cold test and EPT at 10 wk after the injury. In the second case, the tooth color had returned to its normal shade at 10 wk after the traumatic injury but remained insensitive to the cold test and EPT. In the third case, the discoloration was successfully treated with vital tooth bleaching.
Background: This study aimed to determine the effect of ramen sauce on tooth tone changes over time, after selecting three different ramen colors from the ramens sold in the market, and applying the sauce to bovine teeth. Methods: Healthy bovine teeth were selected, and cutting discs were used to produce 60 specimens (5× 5× 3 mm), with 15 specimens distributed per county. Three types of ramen (buldak, chacharoni black bean sauce, and ottogi curry noodle) were used as the experimental group, and water was used as the negative control group. Tooth tone measurement was performed using a spectrophotometer (CM-700d) to measure the color before and after 1 (3 h 44 min), 2 (7 h 28 min), 3 (11 h 12 min), and 4 weeks (14 h 56 min). Analysis of the color tone change was performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 28. Results: In the experimental group, there was a significant color tone change before and after immersion. L* indicated the largest change in black bean sauce ramen, a* indicated buldak ramen, and b* indicated the largest change in curry ramen. The amount of color change (∆E*) was the largest in curry ramen, followed by buldak and black bean sauce ramens. The results of the post-hoc analysis showed significant differences between all groups except buldak and black bean sauce ramens. Conclusion: All three types of ramen revealed significant color change before and after immersion, and curry ramen showed the largest amount of color change among them.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate tooth whitening and microhardness after treatments with tooth bleaching agents containing dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) and 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) which were used in-office bleaching. Thirty enamel specimens were obtained from human premolars and randomly divided into 3 groups(n=10). Tooth bleaching agents were prepared with DCPD (0 g for controls, 0.1 g and 1 g for experimental groups) and HP solution (35% HP). All groups were applied to enamel surfaces for 60 min for 1 day. The pH of each tooth bleaching agent was measured. Tooth color, microhardness of enamel surfaces were also measured. The tooth bleaching agents containing DCPD showed a significant increase in pH compared to the ones without DCPD(p<0.05). Paired t-tests showed significant difference in color values of enamel before and after bleaching in all the groups(p<0.05). As a result, changes in color, containing DCPD group does not contain a statistically significant difference between groups was observed.(p>0.05). In all groups, tooth hardness after bleaching showed a significant decrease in microhardness (p<0.05). However, the DCPD concentration increased in the bleaching, microhardness values slightly decreased. Based on the above results, tooth bleaching agents containing DCPD and 35%HP were equally effective. Due to increases in pH and effective reduction of tooth surface decalcification, the surface characteristics are exposed to a reduced degree of negative effects, resulting in fewer constituent enamel alterations. Thus, commercial availability of the constituents of tooth whitening materials can be achieved.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of tooth bleaching agent contained 15% carbamide peroxide on the color, microhardness and surface roughness of tooth-colored restorative materials by using pH cycling model. Methods : Four types of tooth-colored restorative materials, including a composite resin(Filtek Z350 ; Z350), a flowable composite resin(Filtek P60 : P60), a compomer(Dyract$^{(R)}$ AP ; DY), and a glass-ionomer cement(KetacTM Molar Easymix ; KM). were used in the study. Eighty-eight specimens of each material were fabricated, randomly divided into two groups(n=44): experimental group(15% carbamide peroxide) and control group(distilled water). These groups were then divided into four subgroups(n=11). All groups were bleached 4 hours per day for 14 days using pH cycling model. The authors measured the color, microhardness, and roughness of the specimens before and after bleaching. The data were analyzed with ANOVA and T-test. Results : Z350 and P60 showed a slight color change(${\Delta}E^*$), whereas DY and KM showed significantly color change(p<0.05). Among them, the greatest color change was observed in DY. Percentage microhardness loss(PML) of the distilled water group was 1.8 to 5.1%, and 15% peroxide peroxide group was 5.0 to 25.2%. Microhardness of DY and KM showed a statistically significant decrease(p<0.05). Roughness was increased in all groups after bleaching. Z350 and P60 does not have a significant difference(p>0.05), however DY and KM significantly increased more than the 0.2 ${\mu}m$(p<0.05). Conclusions : The effects of bleaching on restorative materials were material dependent. It is necessary to consider the type of the material before starting the treatment.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tooth color changes of resin bonding sites and their adjacent sites on orthodontic bracket bonding. Sixty extracted sound premolars were used and the tooth color was recorded according to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color system using a spectrophotometer. The tooth colors of the twenty premolars were measured and compared before bracket bonding and after removal. On a further twenty premolars, the tooth color was measured before and after only primer application. In the change of $L^*$ values, according to the bracket bonding and primer application, the lightness was decreased, and in the change of $a^*\;and\;b^*$ values, the color was changed into a more yellowish color The color differences $({\Delta}E^*)$ were calculated from the $L^*a^*b^*$ values and compared with the standard value of clinical detection $({\Delta}E^*=3.7)$. The color differences between before the bracket bonding and after removal noted exceeded the standard value and those of between before and after the primer application were not larger than the standard value. Toothbrushing was performed after application of the primer to evaluate the color changes according to the primer abrasion. As a control, toothbrushing was performed on the last twenty premolars. The color differences noted were larger than the standard value after toothbrushing. Also, to evaluate the color changes of the tooth which is exposed to sun irradiation after bracket removal, additional photoaging was performed and the color was measured for all teeth. The additional color differences after photoaging were smaller than the standard value. The above results suggest that the tooth color changes after fixed orthodontic treatment.

PURPOSE. To identify the most frequent natural tooth colors using the Easyshade Compact (Vita -Zahnfabrik) spectrophotometer on a sample of the Spanish population according to the 3D Master System. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The middle third of the facial surface of natural maxillary central incisors was measured with an Easyshade Compact spectrophotometer (Vita Zahnfabrik) in 1361 Caucasian Spanish participants aged between 16 and 89 years. Natural tooth color was recorded using the 3D Master System nomenclature. The program used for the present descriptive statistical analysis of the results was SAS 9.1.3. RESULTS. The results show that the most frequent dental color in the total sample studied is 3M1 (7.05%), followed by the intermediate shade 1M1.5 (6.91%) and 2L1.5 (6.02%). CONCLUSION. According to the research methodology used, and taking into account the limitations of this study, it can be proposed that the most frequent color among the Spanish population is 3M1; the most common lightness group is 2; the most frequent hue group according to the 3D Master System is M and the most frequent chroma group is 1.5.
Color is an important factor in dental esthetics. Application of natural tooth color will not fail to produce pleasing results. But a standardized method of shade matching has not been adopted. If we are to overcome the color matching problem in dentistry, an understanding of the nature of color and light is essential. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different light sources and different background colors on the ability of observers to correctly match shades of artifical teeth. And observation was made to determine if the time spent in making a shade match was a factor in the correctness of the response. A test method was devised and 50 individuals made observations which were recorded and analyzed. $X^2$-test gave results indicating that the time factor had no effect on the response made. An analysis of variance showed the following effects significant at the five percent level; (1) light source (2) background color (3) subject. The following conclusions can be drawn from this study; (1) The time spent in making shade selection is not a factor in the correctness of the selections. (2) The light source used is an important factor in matching tooth shade; and there is no significant difference between the light sources in shade matching. (3) Under the conditions of this study, the greatest accuracy in shade matching was obtained on the brown background.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate of the color change, tooth surface and intra-pulpal temperature of tooth bleaching by light activation Methods : Forty-eight extracted bovine teeth were immersed into a tea solution for 24 hours. The specimens were randomly divided into four groups(n=15):(G1) 15% HP + without light activation, (G2) 15% HP + light activation, (G3) 25% HP + without light activation, (G4) 25% HP + light activation. All specimens were bleached for 15 minutes three times. The spectrophotometer (CM-2600d, Konica Minolta, Osaka, Japan) was used including before bleaching, immediately after bleaching, 1 week, 1 and 3 months after the end of bleaching. The temperature rise were measured in the pulpal chamber and tooth surface with a digital thermocouple thermometer(Termopar Digital Multimeter, Tektronix DMM916, USA). Between the tested time points, the specimens were stored in distilled water. The data were analyzed by ANOVA, t-test and Tukey's post hoc test set at 0.05. Results : There was no significant color change by the use of light after the bleaching treatment(p>0.05). The dental bleaching treatments of teeth with 15% HP and 25% HP did not seem to be more effective when light source was used. There was no difference in color stability between groups within three month(p>0.05). There was an increase in tooth surface and pulp temperature, but it was not sufficient to cause damage to the pulp. Conclusions :The use of light activation has no obvious effective impact on the tooth bleaching effect.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between zirconia core thickness and color tone blocking of discolored tooth and metal post. Methods: For this study, we made 20-porcelain sample and 4-metal sample( liechtenstein IPS e.max) bonded to zirconia core of different thickness with cement(Relyx ARC-3M USA)for produce discolored. We measured the color-spectral characteristics, using Shadepilot equipment(Degudent USA).We measured it with Shadepilot equipment set by automated average mode in 3 times And applied the average value obtained from 2 times of measurement in the middle of each sample. Results: As a result of analysing color-spectral characteristics on zirconia core sample, Depending on the thickness of zirconia core, the value of brightness(${\Delta}L*$:color-spectral characteristic) was increased within limited range, value of ${\Delta}a*$, ${\Delta}b*$ was decrease. Conclusion: Consequently, we obtained the following results: Changes of sample color were observed depending on the thickness of zirconia, but the range of change did not exceed the scope range of shade guide. The case of metal posts, shade guide color D2 were observed in 0.5mm of zirconia core thickness. As a result, in case of porcelain, increasing the zirconia thickness of 0.3mm or more is unnecessary for color blocking effect, in case of metal post, considering the discolored tooth, thickness of zirconia with at least 0.5mm or more is recommended.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of commercial home-tooth bleaching agents on the color of tooth. Twenty five sound extracted teeth were randomly divided into five groups. The color differences between before and after treatment with five types of tooth bleaching agents (7.5% hydrogen peroxide Nite White $Excel^{(R)}$, 10% carbamide peroxide Nite White $Excel^{(R)}$, 16% carbamide peroxide Nite White $Excel^{(R)}$, 10% carbamide peroxide Insta-BriteTM, 20% carbamide peroxide Insta-$Brite^{TM}$) were evaluated. The results were as follows: 1. By 2 week home tooth bleaching agent applications, the values ($L^*$) of bovine teeth increased as high as 4.38 $\sim$ 8.80 when comparing to those of the samples before treatment, and the color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) showed as high as 10.16 $\sim$ 15.04. 2. 16% carbamide peroxide Nite White Excel induced significantly greater ${\Delta}L^*$ than other test edgroups except for 7.5% hydrogen peroxide Day White Excel, and significantly greater ${\Delta}E^*$ than other tested groups by 2 week bleaching agent treatments (p<0.01). 3. 16% carbamide peroxide Nite White Excel(${\Delta}L^*$=8.80, ${\Delta}E^*$=15.04) induced significantly greater ${\Delta}L^*$ and ${\Delta}E^*$ than 10% carbamide peroxide Nite White Excel(${\Delta}L^*$=5.01, ${\Delta}E^*$=10.16)(p<0.01), but significant difference between 10% carbamide peroxide Insta-Brite(${\Delta}L^*$=4.38, ${\Delta}E^*$=10.51) and 20% carbamide peroxide Insta-Brite(${\Delta}L^*$=5.63, ${\Delta}E^*$=11.23) was not shown in ${\Delta}L^*$ and ${\Delta}E^*$(p>0.01). 4. 16% carbamide peroxide Nite White Excel(${\Delta}L^*$=8.80, ${\Delta}E^*$=15.04) which were applied in night time induced significantly greater ${\Delta}L^*$ and ${\Delta}E^*$ than 7.5% hydrogen peroxide Day White Excel(${\Delta}L^*$=8.47, ${\Delta}E^*$=12.75) which were applied in day time. Conclusions: These results demonstrate that all the commercial home-tooth bleaching agents have appreciable bleaching effect on teeth, and the effects of home-tooth bleaching agents which are used during night time are affected by content of carbamide peroxide. Especially the whitening effect of home tooth bleaching agents that are used through night time is greater than that of short time-applying tooth bleaching agent.
